Dwyer’s late goal lifts FHSU women’s soccer past Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – A golden goal off the foot of Thayla Dwyer handed the Fort Hays State women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over Lindenwood Friday evening. The Tigers are now 2-0 in conference play and 6-2-1 overall, while the Lady Lions took their first conference loss to fall to 1-1 in the league and 4-3-1 in 2016.

The Tigers managed 16 shots in the contest, placing eight of those attempts on frame. Lindenwood rifled off 10 attempts in the match but put just four shots on goal, with sophomore goalkeeper Abbie Flax making the save on all four occasions. Flax improved her record to 4-2-1 on the year, placing her in a tie for third with nine career wins at FHSU. Dwyer netted her fifth goal of the season, second-most on the team.

FHSU dominated possession over the opening 45 minutes, allowing the Lady Lions just one shot attempt that sailed wide in the half. The Tigers took six shots in the opening half but were unable to find the back of the net. Junior Jasmine Beaulieu had a chance to score in the 23rd minute but instead had back-to-back shots blocked by a Lindenwood defender.

The Tigers had three more shots turned aside by the Lindenwood keeper and two others blocked in the second half. The Lady Lions turned up the pressure over the final five minutes, taking three shots after taking just four over the first 85 minutes.

Fort Hays State had the first chance to score in overtime after Kelsey Steffens had a shot saved following a corner kick, one of five corners for the Tigers in the match.

The Lady Lions put two shots on goal in the second overtime period, but Flax handled them both with ease. As the final whistle drew near, the Tigers mounted one final offensive effort when Eden Stoddard sent a ball over the defensive back line. Dwyer grabbed the pass before beating a defender to have an open look at goal. The junior forward then struck towards the left post from inside the 18-yard box, beating the keeper to give Fort Hays State its second-straight victory.

The Tigers will return to the pitch on Sunday when they face off against Central Missouri, who is currently undefeated and ranked second in the nation. The match is scheduled to commence at 1 p.m. from the South Recreation Complex in Warrensburg, Mo.

Hays fall to Valley Center at homecoming

The Hays Hays High Indians hosted undefeated Valley Center Friday night for their homecoming game. It was the just the second meeting ever between the two schools. The first came in 1995 during the first round of the playoffs. The game was won 28-7 by the Hornets.

Hays and Valley Center played to a scoreless draw through the first quarter. Hays missed a field goal on their first drive following a 51 yard run. The Indians forced a punt and fumble on the first two Valley Center possessions.

Hays was unable to take advantage of good field position then suffered a loss. Following a tackle by Freddy Haines, he was unable to get back to his feet. Haines was eventually removed from the game via a backboard. A this time we have no more information on his condition.

The Indians used the emotion of their injured teammate to intercept a pass by Collyn Kreutzer, his second of the season. Kreuzter returned the ball 40 yards and Hays High moved into field goal range for Logan Clark to connect on a career long 38 yard attempt, giving the Indians a 3-0 lead.

Valley Center fumbled on their next drive after getting inside the Indian’s red zone. The Indians though had to punt allowing the Hornets to have one more drive. Quarterback Wyatt Lange ran for 24 yards on 3rd and 15 and eight yards on 3rd and 2. The second conversion scored the games first touchdown with 24 second left before half time and giving the Hornets a 7-3 lead a the break.

Highlights

The Indians started the second half recovering an onside kick but could not take advantage. Valley Center then threw their second interception on their next possession. Xavier Dandurand picked off his first pass of the year. Hays moved into the red zone on the possession allowing Clark to kick a 27 yard field and make the score 7-6, still in favor of Valley Center. The Hornets responded with their best passing play on the night on the next possession when Wyatt Lange hit Dalton Cross in double coverage for 36 yards and the only other touchdown of the game, putting Valley Center up 17-6.

Hays put together one more scoring threat getting the ball to the 20 on a catch, but fumbled for their only turnover of the night. Valley Center couldn’t turn the fumble into points and had to punt the ball. Hays thought could not convert on the 4th down on the following drive. Valley Center capped the game with a 19 yard field goal and final score of 20-6.

Merritt wins first start as Indians beat Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ryan Merritt retired the final 13 batters he faced in five strong innings in his first big league start, Francisco Lindor hit a three-run homer as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Kansas City Royals 7-2 Friday night.

Merritt (1-0) gave up a run on three hits in the first, but nothing after that. Merritt, who had made three relief appearances after being promoted Sept. 11 from Triple-A Columbus, threw 62 pitches, striking out four and walking none.

Lindor, who snapped an 0-for-29 drought with a double in a four-run third, homered off the left-field foul pole with pinch runner Michael Martinez and Carlos Santana aboard in the seventh.

Santana, who had three hits, tripled in two runs in the fourth and scored on Jason Kipnis’ sacrifice fly. Jose Ramirez singled with two outs to score Lindor.

Yordano Ventura (11-12) gave up four runs and six hits with three walks while striking out eight in six innings.

FHSU volleyball upsets No. 6 Jennies

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State volleyball team accomplished something Friday night it had only done once in 25 tries – beat Central Missouri. The 14-3 (2-2 MIAA) Tigers dropped the opening set but came back to beat the No. 6 Jennies in four sets, outmatching the perennial powerhouse in every facet of the game down the stretch. With the loss, UCM falls to 12-3 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play.

The only other Tiger victory over UCM came in 2003, an opening-weekend match in Lawton, Okla. FHSU is now 1-9 against the Jennies inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. The win snapped a nine-game winning streak for the visiting Jennies.

Fort Hays State managed a .239 attack percentage in the match, holding UCM to a .178 effort. Thirteen Jennie service errors haunted the visitors, with FHSU giving away just three free points off the serve. The Tiger block party was out in full force, picking up 10 blocks on the night.

The Jennies appeared to be en route to an easy night after the first set, hitting .342 to take the frame 25-20. FHSU struggled to a .107 attack percentage in the set, picking up 10 kills and seven errors. The league-leading Tigers did not block an attempt in the frame while UCM managed three swats. The visitors never trailed in the set, leading by as many as eight after a 7-3 run made the score 21-13. Kurt Kohler’s squad didn’t roll over, scoring five of the next six points to narrow the gap to four on kills from Rebekah Spainhour, Hannah Wagy and Crystal Whitten. A kill off the hand of Callie Christensen fended off one set point before a Tiger attack error handed UCM a five-point victory.

The Tigers came alive in the second set, picking up an eye-popping .387 attack percentage while limiting the powerful Jennie offense to a .000 outing. FHSU picked up six blocks in the set, with Spainhour contributing two solo and two assists. The Black and Gold jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a pair of bizarre plays, giving them a lead they would never relinquish. Libero Kailey Klibbe served the team to six-straight points to take an 11-3 lead, with Spainhour throwing down two kills and one solo block during that stretch. The teams traded points for the rest of the match before Wagy finished things off with a quick attack at the net, giving the Tigers a 25-14 win. The Jennies’ 14 points is tied for the fewest points they have scored in a set this season (vs No. 19 Angelo State, 9/9/16).

Fort Hays State stayed hot out of the break, taking the third set 25-19. Whitten led the way with six kills, six digs and one solo block in the frame while Azlyn Cassaday added five kills on nine swings without recording an error. There were three early lead changes in the set before Whitten handed the Tigers the lead for good at 7-6. The Tigers went on a 7-1 run later in the frame fueled by three-straight kills from Cassaday, making the score 22-14. A Jennie block closed the gap to five before Whitten sealed the victory with an authoritative kill after a pass from Wagy.

Both sides fought with everything they had in the fourth set, leading to 18 ties and seven lead changes. The Jennies outhit FHSU in the final set, .195 to .119, but five service errors ultimately put the Jennies away. Neither team led by more than one point before Cassaday put away a pass from Wagy to make the score 11-9, prompting UCM to burn a timeout. The Jennies stormed back with four-straight points to take a momentary lead until another service error leveled the set at 15. There were six more ties down the stretch before Spainhour handed FHSU the lead for good at 23-22 with a powerful kill. The Jennies fought off one match point after another Spainhour kill made it 24-22, but a strong swing from Whitten following a perfect set from Wagy brought the match to a close, 25-23.

Whitten led the Tigers with 14 kills, throwing in 15 digs and one solo block through the night. Spainhour added 13 kills to just two errors for a .458 attack percentage while adding five total blocks (two solo). Cassaday came off the bench to match her career-high with nine kills, all in the third and fourth sets. Klibbe was everywhere on defense, leading the match with 18 digs. Wagy tossed up a match-high 39 assists, adding five kills on six attempts (.833 %), 10 digs and three total blocks (one solo).

The Tigers look to make it two-straight Saturday when they face off with Lindenwood at 6:30 p.m. Fans with a ticket to Saturday’s football game will receive free admission to the volleyball match later that night.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas officials have approved the state’s $100,000 share of $412,000 settlement Friday in a federal lawsuit over the death of a 4-year-old northeast Kansas boy.

The State Finance Council agreed Friday to pay the money to Naomi Boone, the mother of the late Mekhi Boone. The boy’s father, Lee Davis, is serving nearly 20 years for second-degree murder in the boy’s 2013 beating death. Naomi Boone has contended that one of the state’s foster care contractors placed the child with Davis while aware that he had a history of domestic violence.

Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley, a Topeka Democrat, says the state is paying the money because it had an obligation to protect the child. Gov. Sam Brownback says TFI Family Services Inc. will pay $312,000.

IRS: No more Kansas grad student health care subsidies

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Board of Regents says graduate student employees at state universities will lose their health care subsidies starting next year as a result of a recent opinion by the IRS regarding health insurance.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the IRS issued an opinion that an employing university can no longer provide a subsidy for graduate students’ health insurance under the Affordable Care Act because the system’s student plan is an individual plan.

Regents communications director Breeze Richardson says Kansas’ state universities plan to offer extra compensation to students in place of the subsidies. The amount may vary by campus.

Richardson says there may be efforts at the federal level to get the IRS to change its opinion, but it would likely be too late for the upcoming academic year.

No. 17 Tigers men’s soccer shutougs Bearcats in MIAA opener

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Fort Hays State opened MIAA play with a 3-0 shutout win at Southwest Baptist on Friday afternoon. The Tigers improved to 5-2-1 overall and ran their win streak to three matches, while SBU dropped to 0-10-1 on the season.

The Tigers took the lead in the 26th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick. Maurizio Costa made good on the attempt, netting his second goal of the season. Sergio Villalba scored his first goal of the season in the 42nd minute to extend the lead to 2-0 on a nice pass into the box from Arsenio Chamorro.

Michael Yantz benefitted from strong defense in goal, picking up the win. He is now 3-2-1 overall. He did not have to face any shots on goal as the defense allowed just two shots in the match. The Tigers outshot SBU 22-2 in the match. Seven of FHSU’s shots were on target with the SBU denying four.

Kan. democrat: State diverting more from highway projects to balance budget

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — While Republican Gov. Sam Brownback is avoiding the issue, a Democratic legislator says Kansas is likely to divert additional funds from highway projects to balance its budget.

Brownback declined to say Friday whether he would propose the diversion of highway funds to other government programs during the fiscal year that begins July 1. It’s a move he and other governors have used regularly in the past when faced with budget problems.

Democratic state Sen. Laura Kelly of Topeka said the state isn’t likely to have any other choice to fill short-term gaps in the budget. She predicted Brownback will propose tapping sales tax revenues now set aside for transportation projects.

Brownback also said a task force he appointed will be releasing proposals Tuesday for improving the state’s revenue projections.

FEMA denies Kansas appeal for federal disaster declaration

TOPEKA – The Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied an appeal made by Governor Sam Brownback regarding a request for a federal disaster declaration for a number of Kansas counties affected by severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding May 22-31, according to a media release.

Brownback’s original request for a federal declaration for the public assistance grant and hazard mitigation grant program funds statewide was denied. The counties named in the request were Barton, Butler, Chase, Cheyenne, Clark, Clay, Cowley, Crawford, Dickinson, Edwards, Elk, Ford, Franklin, Greenwood, Harvey, Hodgeman, Jefferson, Leavenworth, Lincoln, Lyon, Morris, Ness, Osage, Ottawa, Rawlins, Rooks, Scott, Sherman, Thomas, Wabaunsee, and Wyandotte.

Brownback filed the appeal with FEMA on Aug. 31. In a letter dated Sept. 29, FEMA denied the appeal, stating the agency reaffirmed its original findings that the damages caused by the storms did not warrant a major disaster declaration.

Judge sets deadlines in Kansas proof of citizenship voter notice

VoteKANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A federal judge is taking a hands-on approach to the notice Kansas will send to thousands of voters informing them of their eligibility to cast a ballot in November.

U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson on Friday gave Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach and the American Liberties Union until noon Monday to submit a joint draft for her review.

She has also set a telephone status conference for Wednesday to discuss any revisions.

Robinson canceled contempt proceedings for Kobach after he agreed to concessions that register and notify people who applied at motor vehicle offices or with a federal form without providing documentary proof of citizenship.

Kobach and the ACLU brokered a deal allowing roughly 20,000 people so far to vote on a regular ballot, instead of a provisional one.
