Kan. businessman, substitute teacher admits sex contact with student

Sex offender crime assaultMANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — A Manhattan, Kansas, businessman who once was a backup quarterback at Kansas State faces November sentencing after admitting in court that he had improper sexual contact with a former high school student.

Zachary Burton, 38, pleaded guilty Monday in Riley County to one count of unlawful sexual relations.

Authorities say the female student went to Riley County High School, where Burton was an assistant boys’ basketball coach and substitute teacher.

Burton owns a business called Fieldhouse Development Inc.

Burton’s sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 15.

Collections underway for 19th annual Coat Drive

Collections have begun for the 19th annual Coat Drive. Coats, hats and gloves in good condition that are outgrown or no longer worn are being accepted.

The greatest need is for children’s sizes, but all sizes are accepted. Donations will be accepted from now until Oct. 5.

Drop-off locations at both Hays McDonald’s locations, Master Cleaners and Top Notch Cleaners. Apparel also can be taken to any Hays school.

There are no income requirements for receiving coats — anyone in need may receive one.

Coats will be distributed  from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 15 at Top Notch Cleaners and Master Cleaners. Those businesses will clean and repair items before distribution.

Leftover items will be donated to the Community Assistance Center or Goodwill.

The event is sponsored by Top Notch Cleaners, Master Cleaners, McDonald’s of Hays, Casual Graphics and Eagle Radio.

BEECH: Extension presents fall financial series

Fall is a great time to address that nagging good intention to manage your money with a little more skill and care. The Fall Financial Series from the Ellis County Extension Office can help.

In this three-part evening series presented by Linda Beech, Ellis County Extenesion FCS agent, there won’t be any “hot tips” to make your rich overnight but there will be plenty of “common cents” information to enhance your financial life. All programs are free and will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Ellis County Extension Office, 601 Main in Hays.

• Monday, Oct. 3: Understanding Your Money Personality.
This program will explore the habits and attitudes that make up your money personality. Use our special card sorting activity to discover more about yourself and the way you make money decisions. Think about how other family members approach money and learn about the effect of finances on couple and family relationships.

• Tuesday, Oct. 11: Saving Dollars When You Don’t Have a Dime to Spare.
Think it is impossible to save money? The ability to save is not necessarily a factor of income. It’s not only how much you make, but how you choose to spend and save that makes the difference. This program will hep you recognize how even small expenditures add up over time and will encourage money-saving changes so you can being to save dollars, even when you think you don’t have a dime to spare.

• Tuesday, Oct. 18: Money on the Bookshelf– Using Stories to Teach Kids Financial Skills.
The childhood years have a strong effect on how children learn to manage money. Children start building knowledge about numbers, money and choices long before they begin school. “Money on the Bookshelf” uses children’s books and basic concepts about financial literacy to help children learn about money and how to use it. Written guides for 10 children’s books are included for parents, grandparents, day-care providers and others to use with kids.

Mark your calendar and plan to attend these fall financial programs from the Ellis County Extension Office. Enter the rear meeting room door from the north parking lot.

Advance registration is requested to aid planning and ensure adequate materials. A minimum attendance is required to hold each program. Call the Ellis County Extension Office at 785-628-9430 to register or for more information.

TMP-Marian girls’ golf finishes third in third in Hoisington

The TMP-Marian girls’ golf team shot a 210 and finished third at the Hoisington Invitational.  Hoisington and Larned tied for first with a 181, but Hoisington had the better fifth score.
Individually, Shannen Chin led the Monarchs with a 43 and finished second, five shots back of Larned’s Dorothy Keenan who won the individual title. The rest of TMP’s scoring were Alison Helget 53, Halle Lang 57, Jenna Romme 57, Gracie Wasinger 60 and Haleigh Spray 67.
Karee Dinkel, the team’s No. 1 player missed the tourney due to illness.
Next tourney for TMP is at Clay Center on Thursday September 29.

Kansas woman dies after head-on crash

fatalLEAVENWORTH COUNTY – A Kansas woman died in an accident just before 5:30 p.m. on Monday in Leavenworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2002 GMC Sierra driven by Austin Michael Rose, 32, Eudora, was eastbound on U.S. 24/40 just west of 243 Road.

The GMC crossed the double yellow line and hit a westbound 2009 Chevy Equinox head-on.

The driver of the Chevy Kelly Fowler, 51, Lawrence, was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Frontier Forensics.

A 16-year-old and a 1-year-old child in the Chevy were also injured, according to the KHP. There was no report where they were treated.

Rose was transported to KU Medical Center.

All four were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

2 Kansas men hospitalized after pickups collide

KHPGRAY COUNTY – Two Kansas men were injured in an accident just after 8p.m. on Monday in Gray County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a Dodge Ram 3500 driven by Jerald D. Wartman, 71, Ingalls, was northbound on County Road 4 and Y Road.

The driver failed to yield from posted yield sign and collided in the intersection with a 1997 Chevy S-10 pickup driven by Johan Newfeld, 61, Montezuma.

The Dodge continued northeast and hit a utility pole.

Wartman was transported to the hospital in Garden City.

Newfeld was transported to the hospital in Dodge City.

Neither driver was wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Police search for vehicle taken from Kansas hotel parking lot

SEDGWICK COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities in Sedgwick County are investigating a report of a stolen vehicle and need help locating a stolen El Camino.

The vehicle was taken from a hotel in the 6800 block of west Kellogg in Wichita on Sunday night or early Monday.

If you see this vehicle please call 911 immediately.

4 more Oklahoma earthquakes shake portions of Kansas

ALFALFA COUNTY, CO – An earthquake just after 6:30p.m. on Monday was centered in northwest Oklahoma, four miles northeast of Cherokee and just over 100 miles southwest of Wichita.

It measured a magnitude 3.7, according to the U.S. Geological Survey and was felt in much of southern of Kansas.

There are no injuries or damage reported.

In addition, three other quakes measuring 3.2 in Logan County, Oklahoma and quakes measuring 2.7 and 2.8 in Pawnee County were recorded on Monday.
