Food waste is a problem that complicates efforts to feed a growing world. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimates that roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year — approximately 1.3 billion tons — is lost or wasted.

Home food preservation is an important strategy for reducing food waste and saving food from a time of plenty for a time of need. Fresh produce is plentiful at this time of year, so many families are looking to freeze, can, or dehydrate food to save it for later.

Kansas State University and the University of Missouri Extension services have teamed up to produce some new resources to help cooks safely capture the tastes of the summer to enjoy well past the growing season.

A series of 17 new instructional videos is now available to teach the safety principles and latest techniques for high-quality home food preservation. Each brief video is a reliable review of the topic in seven minutes or less. You can find the videos on the K-State Research and Extension food preservation website at www.rrc.k-state.edu/preservation or on the K-State YouTube channel at https://tinyurl.com/j2beqfk.

Another KSU-MU partnership is a new food preservation newsletter for Extension agents which is published six times a year. Consumers can find archived issues of the newsletter at the Extension food preservation website listed above.

New this year, too, is the availability of Extension preservation information in Spanish. Ten publications on safe home food preservation have been translated into Spanish and are now available on the Extension food preservation website.

Another local Extension resource on food preservation is returning with new information. Back for a second year is my “Canners Corner” series on Tuesdays in the Hays Daily News. This series of brief articles about home canning debuted on the Tuesday food page last fall and was recognized with a regional Extension communication award. I’ll start the series again next week and we’ll print 7 or 8 articles as the canning season continues through the fall. Watch for “Canners Corner” food preservation tips inside the canning jar graphic in the Tuesday newspaper through early October.

This is the time of year when gardens, farms and orchards are producing their best. Peaches are starting to come into season and melons are appearing in farmer’s markets and produce stands. Fresh vegetables like cucumbers are available to make into pickles and sweet corn is being picked. Summer squash such as zucchini and yellow squash are ready, and tomatoes are starting to ripen to eat fresh or to preserve.

Don’t let this delicious fresh produce go to waste. If you’re interested in knowing more about food preservation, check out these new Extension resources or contact the Ellis County Extension Office for questions or more information.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A southern Kansas man has been ordered to spend decades in prison for the 2014 death and sexual assault of a 100-year-old woman.

The Wichita Eagle reports that 37-year-old Kasey Nesbitt was sentenced Thursday in Sedgwick County for first-degree felony murder, rape and aggravated burglary with the intent to commit a sexual assault. Under the sentence, his earliest chance for release would come when he is around 86.

Prosecutors said Martha Schell of Wichita died from blood clots that formed after Nesbitt kicked in her door and assaulted her in September 2014. The attack left her with a broken back and other injuries. DNA evidence connected Nesbitt to the attack.

District attorney Marc Bennett said Thursday that Schell’s family remains “very upset” and is “still grieving” her death.

🎥 Portion of Oak Street waterline to be replaced

The existing water main line on Oak Street between 20th and 26th Streets is more than 60 years old, according to Hays Utilities Dir. Johnny O’Connor.

By BECKY KISER
Hays Post

The existing four-inch water main line on Oak Street between 20th Street and 26th Street is more than 60 years old and needs to be replaced.

It also has a history of leaks and does not provide adequate fire protection, Johnny O’Connor, Hays Director of Utilities, told city commissioners Thursday night.

O’Connor recommended accepting a low bid of $444,777 from J Corp of Hays to replace the waterline with an eight-inch PVC line and make necessary pavement repairs, and also for additional pavement work to replace other areas of failed concrete on Oak Street. The pronject work was budgeted at $500,000.

If city commissioners approve the bid at their next regular meeting, the work could begin in mid-October for 90 working days.  O’Connor anticipated winter weather might stretch the project anywhere from four to six months.

Disruption to the public though, would be minimal, and nearby property owners would be notified ahead of time.

“We should be able to maintain through-traffic to the residences, but half of the road (Oak St.) will be taken out of service because we’re moving the (water) line from the edge of the road to the center of the road for better alignment and less connections to service that area,” O’Connor said.

He also told commissioners the residences “will always have water.”

“The new line will be put in and when we’re ready to tie-in we’ll notify everybody and then that tie-in will be done.”

This will be the third and final phase of the 2013 Waterline Projects and is part of the Capital Improvement Plan in Hays.

Kansas man charged with child sex, criminal threat to stand trial

WardHUTCHINSON — A Kansas man charged in a child sex case was bound over for trial on the four counts against him on Thursday and then arrested on two new charges filed by the state.

Tanner Ward, 23, Hutchinson, faces arraignment for two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, aggravated burglary and criminal threat. The charges involving a child 14 to 16 years of age are alleged to have occurred on January and January 11.

The aggravated burglary is alleged to have occurred on June 23 where he allegedly went into a home in the 100 block of East 5th to allegedly intimidate a victim or for a sexually motivated crime, according to police. The mother of the victim found him in her daughters bed. He was later found inside the garage of that home.

The final charge of criminal threat is alleged to have occurred on February 15, where he allegedly threatened to cut another person’s head off. Saying once all this is over he would go to the victim’s mothers home and take care of her.

In another instance, Ward was originally arrested for burglary after he allegedly stole some copper pipes from the construction site at the Hutchinson Sports Arena, took the pipes to Midwest Iron and Metal and sold them for cash. In doing so, he apparently signed papers saying the items were his.

District Attorney Keith Schroeder told the court that had Ward agreed to plead to one charge of indecent liberties with a child, he would have dropped the other charges and not file any new ones. Ward turned it down, so with this case, the state charged him with making false writing.
Ward is also alleged to have made contact with the alleged victim urging her to not show in court to testify telling her she wouldn’t be in trouble if she told them she simply forgot. Schroeder charged him with another count of Intimidation of a witness.
Arraignment on the original charges will be on September 6, and the new charges will added to a waiver-status docket on September 7.

HPD: Details on Thursday officer-involved shooting released, investigation begins

fatal-shooting-4
A man was shot and killed by a Hays Police officer Thursday afternoon in the 2300 block of Timber Drive.

Ellis County Attorney’s Office

On Thursday at approximately 2:33 p.m., a Hays Police Department officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic infraction in the 2700 block of Plaza Avenue in Hays.

The driver of the vehicle was not obeying the commands of the police officer, according to a news release from the office of Ellis County Attorney Tom Drees, and the officer requested additional officers to respond. As an additional officer responded, the stopped vehicle quickly accelerated and police vehicles pursued the vehicle for several minutes.

The vehicle was stopped in the 2300 block of Timber Drive in Hays, when the driver got out of the vehicle. An HPD officer gave verbal commands to the driver, which were not followed, Drees’ office reported. The incident escalated until, at approximately 2:41 p.m., one shot was fired by a Hays police officer, striking the driver. The driver, a 36-year-old white male, died from the gunshot wound.

Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler, following written Hays Police Department procedures, immediately deferred the shooting investigation to the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Scheibler further requested a public statement of the essential facts be released as soon as practical, consistent with the needs of the KBI and the Ellis County Coroner to conduct their investigation.

Scheibler said a full and impartial investigation of the shooting will take place.

The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of his family. The names of the officers involved are being withheld pursuant to the investigation. The shooting is under investigation by the Ellis County Coroner Dr. Lyle Noordhoek, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office.
