Wednesday morning earthquakes shake Kansas, Oklahoma

LUTHER, Okla. (AP) — Central Oklahoma was rattled Wednesday morning by an earthquake, but there are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.0. It struck shortly after 6 a.m. and had in epicenter in Luther, or about 23 miles northeast of Oklahoma City.

The USGS says the earthquake was widely felt in central Oklahoma and as far north as Wichita, Kansas.

A magnitude 2.7 magnitude quake also shook northeast of Rose Hill Kansas on Wednesday, according to the USGS.

The number of magnitude 3.0 or greater earthquakes has skyrocketed in Oklahoma, from a few dozen in 2012 to more than 900 last year. Scientists have linked the increase to the underground disposal of wastewater from oil and gas production and state regulators have asked producers to reduce wastewater disposal volumes.

FHSU’s marketing degree now has options

Martin
Martin

FHSU University Relations

Until now, students earning their Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing from Fort Hays State University could focus only on marketing. Now, students earning their BBA in marketing have the option to concentrate in business development and sales or digital marketing.

In October 2015, marketing faculty submitted a request to change the program. Included in the request was a certificate in social media marketing for non-majors. The new concentrations and certificate are now available.

“These concentrations will help serve undergraduate marketing majors, Master of Business Administration students and other undergraduate students better by preparing them for high-demand careers,” said Dr. Mary Martin, associate professor of management. “Sales is a common career path with many opportunities in almost any industry.”

Stated in the request are multiple statistics supporting why sales and digital marketing are a “common career path” and “critical element” of marketing.

“According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, SalesForce estimates that nearly 12.3 percent of all the jobs in the U.S. are full-time sales positions, and over $1 trillion is spent annually on sales forces. Between the years of 2012 and 2022, it is projected that 29,800 new sales manager positions will be created, a growth of 8 percent.”

Students who would like to stick with pursuing a general marketing concentration or degree will still have the option to do so.

“FHSU students will have a wide variety of courses to choose from as they study one of the most versatile and dynamic fields of today’s business world,” said Martin.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Senate President Susan Wagle has hired a fellow lawmaker to work on her staff as legislative director.

Sen. Garrett Love, a Republican from Montezuma, was hired last month and will earn $40,000 to help with legislative campaigns, focusing on rural races. Love announced near the end of the last legislative session that he would not seek re-election. His term ends in December.

The Wichita Eagle report the state’s ethics law allows personal staff of elected officials to do campaign work on taxpayer time. Wagle’s chief of staff, Harrison Hems, says Love won’t take any reimbursements as a senator for being in Topeka for interim committees while serving in his new job.

Love says he would not continue in the job if Wagle is Senate president again next session.
