Former US Rep. Tiahrt exploring options to get Kan. congressional seat

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Former Congressman Todd Tiahrt is looking into trying to get his old job back.

Tiahrt says he’s “exploring the options” after President-elect Donald Trump offered the CIA director job to U.S. Rep. Mike Pompeo. But Tiahrt wouldn’t say for certain whether he would seek the seat in the special election that will happen if the U.S. Senate confirms Pompeo.

Pompeo was first elected to Congress in 2010, running for an open seat after Tiahrt vacated his position for a failed U.S. Senate run.

Tiahrt attempted to reclaim his 4th Congressional District seat in the House four years later but lost to Pompeo by 26 percentage points. The loss followed a bitter primary campaign that saw both candidates engage in personal attacks.

Bitterly cold, but not a record

Hays Post

It was cold overnight in Hays.

According to official statistics from the K-State Agricultural Research Center, the temperature Wednesday night fell to 3°.

That’s more than chilly, but not a record chill.

The official low temperature for Dec. 7 in Hays is -8°, which was recorded three times, in 1902, 1909 and 1927.

A trace of snow fell overnight as well, yielding just a trace of precipitation.

The overnight cold may have been felt even more by some Hays residents due to a Midwest Energy power failure very early Thursday morning. By 10:30 a.m., all Hays customers were back in service according to the MWE outage viewer.

Today’s forecast calls for continued cold.

MORRIS COUNTY –Officials are working to determine the cause of a large, Kansas grain big spill.

Just before 11 a.m. on Wednesday, the 500,000-bushel grain bin collapsed in the Morris County community of White City.

“Emergency crews responded and found that the grain bin had come straight down. It was 500,000 bushel capacity, but it was only 250,000 bushels full of corn and it spilled all over the ground,” said Chris Blackledge, Morris County Emergency Management Director,

Blackledge said four elevator employees on the scene heard a loud commotion outside just before the accident.

“They looked and saw a big cloud of grain dust, could see the side of the bin had opened up, and corn was coming out. It was kind of coming to the ground and tearing itself apart,” he said.

Cleanup of the spill began on Thursday morning. Mor-Kan Grain owns the bin, according to Blackledge.

There were no injuries.

Defrost scofflaws? Leaving unattended car running is against the law

By JONATHAN ZWEYGARDT
Hays Post

With extremely cold temperatures forecast for the next few days, you may be tempted to leave your vehicle running in an effort to let it warm up. But local law enforcement officials urge residents to avoid leaving vehicles that are running unattended.

According to Assistant Hays Police Chief Brian Dawson, under the Standard Traffic Ordinances for Kansas Cities adopted by the city of Hays, you could get a ticket for leaving your vehicle running unattended.

The 2016 ordinance reads in part “No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit it to stand unattended without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key from the ignition.”

Dawson stressed officers are not actively looking for people who violate the ordinance, noting they are more concerned about safety.

“You don’t want to leave a vehicle running unattended, with the keys in it and the vehicle unlocked in case a kid would get in there,” Dawson.

It would also be easy for someone to steal a vehicle left unlocked with the keys in it. Dawson said “it’s not much of a theft deterrent.”

There is an exemption for vehicles with remote start. He added that if they receive complaints, they will investigate.

“If we got called in about it being an issue,” Dawson said, “we would look into it.”

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Police say five people suspected in the abduction of a Wichita woman and her three children knew the victims.

Two of the suspects were living or had lived at the house from which 36-year-old Melissa Gifford was abducted, along with a 2-year-old and two 8-year-olds. They were found safe Tuesday at a hotel in Wichita after the abduction.

All five suspects face charges of kidnapping and aggravated robbery.

The investigation began late Monday when police responded to a robbery call. A resident at the home told officers he was tied up and that one of the suspects forced Gifford and her children into a vehicle.

A police report says a computer, two TVs, a cellphone and a pistol also were taken from the home.
