Saturday Kids Fitness Bootcamp scheduled at HaysMed

2017-kids-saturday-bootcampThe Center for Health Improvement is offering an 11-week Saturday fitness bootcamp for kids. The program is for children ages 8-13 at all fitness levels from beginning to advanced. The program runs from Jan. 7 through March 18.

The program allows kids to have fun while being active and keeping them moving during the winter months. The positive environment at the camp is designed to encourage kids to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. A variety of different individual and group activities will be introduced during the sessions.

The registration fee is $75 for all Saturday sessions. Drop-in fees are also available for $10 for each session attended. Space is limited.

Jacob Herman Fritz

fritz-picLongtime Kanorado, Kansas, resident Jacob Herman Fritz, 85, passed away on Sunday, December 4, 2016 at the Goodland Regional Medical Center in Goodland.

Jake was born on January 9, 1931 in St. Louis, Missouri to Martin and Lena (Shock) Fritz. He was one of two children.

Jake attended school through the 9th grade at a country school north of Ruleton. He served in the United States Army from 1951-1953. On October 15, 1964, Jake married Judy Sivey in Goodland. To this union, three children; Lanette, Rusty and Kelly were born.

Jake was a farmer in Sherman County for many years. He enjoyed fishing, working on engines, woodworking, and every day he would go to Wheat Ridge to play cards.

Preceding him in death was his wife Judy, and his parents Martin and Lena Fritz.

He is survived by his three children; Lanette Keiner and her husband Mike, Rusty Fritz and his wife Wendy, and Kelly Selbe and her husband Randy. He is also survived by one brother Jim Fritz.

Memorial services were held on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 10:00 AM MT at the Goodland United Methodist Church with Pastor Lyn Linde officiating. Private burial of ashes will be held at a later date in the Kanorado Cemetery.

Memorials are designated in Lieu of Flowers to the Kanorado Senior Citizens Center and may be left at the service or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Goodland, KS 67735.

Ellis County authorities seek information on a pair of rural fires

Ellis County Authorities responded to a pair of small fires Monday evening on Hopewell Road.

According to the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews were called to the 2200 block of Hopewell Road just before 7 p.m. Monday. The sheriff’s office said when crews arrived, they found tree branches on fire. There was minimal damage as a result of the fire. Officials say the cause of the fire was undetermined.

Crews were called back to the area just after 8 p.m. to a report of a grass fire in the 1900 block of Hopewell Road. Again, according to the sheriff’s office, there was only minimal damage as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

Officials ask that anyone with information on the two fires contact the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department (785) 625-1040.

Lynn Edward Walker

He was born August 29, 1945 in Lenora, KS to Lawrence and Della (Paugh) Walker. He graduated from Lenora High School. He married Sheila Cochran on April 30, 1966 in Norton, KS.

Lynn was a retired Valve Technician working in a Nuclear Power Plant. He was a US Navy veteran serving 3 tours in Vietnam. He was a member of the Victoria VFW and the NRA. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila of Victoria; two sons, Lance Walker and wife Anngie and Dustin Walker and his significant other Sarah Glass all of Russell; three brothers, Chuck Walker of Lebanon, MO, John Walker of Hutchinson and Jay Walker of Lenora; a sister, Charlene Cunningham of Plainville and four grandchildren, Harlie and Colt Walker, Teagan and Rowdy Walker.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Peter Walker.

Visitation will be Thursday, December 8, 2016 from 6 PM – 8 PM at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Victoria 412 Main in Victoria.

Graveside services will be 2 PM Friday at the Norton City Cemetery in Norton, KS with military honors by the Norton VFW and American Legion Honor Guard.

Despite tweet, Trump is Time magazine’s Person of the Year

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump is Time magazine’s Person of the Year.

The president-elect’s selection was announced Wednesday morning on NBC’s “Today” show.

The Manhattan real estate magnate went from fiery underdog to win the White House over Democrat Hillary Clinton.

Trump won the Electoral College vote, while Clinton won the popular vote.

 

 

Time’s managing editor Nancy Gibbs said Clinton was the No. 2 finalist.

NW Kansas students among the winners of WKMA scholarships

District Attorney awaiting KBI report of fatal Kan. officer-involved shooting

HUTCHINSON – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is working on an independent investigation into Tuesday’s fatal officer-involved shooting at a home in Hutchinson, according to a media release.

Once completed, the findings will be turned over to the Reno County Attorney for review.

The KBI had agents and a crime scene reconstruction team on the scene Tuesday. Preliminary information indicates that shortly after 2:00 a.m., two officers from the Hutchinson Police Department arrived at a residence at 3503 North Ridgewood in Hutchinson in response to a 911 call. After entering the residence, they encountered a man with a firearm. Both officers discharged their firearms, fatally injuring him.

The victim was later identified as 55-year-old Richard R. Jones of Hutchinson.

No further information was released late Tuesday.

Game wardens arrest Kansas suspect for hunting, drug violations

FRANKLIN COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities in Franklin County are investigating a suspect for hunting and drug violations.

On Sunday, a Franklin County Kansas Game Warden responded to landowner’s complaint of a trespassing hunter, according to a social media report.

The suspect was hunting without permission from the landowner and was is facing additional charges include hunting without a hunting license, hunting deer without a deer permit, no screen-shot-2016-12-07-at-5-08-39-amhunter orange, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Authorities did not release the name of the suspect

19-year-old Kansas man enters plea to child-sex charges

LEAVENWORTH COUNTY -A northeastern Kansas man is scheduled for sentencing next month after his no-contest plea to child-sex charges in Leavenworth on Monday.

County Attorney Todd Thompson says Robert Richmond, 19, pleaded no contest to aggravated indecent liberties with a child, a severity level three person felony.

The Leavenworth County Attorney’s Office filed charges following an incident on January 22, 2016, in which Richmond allegedly engaged in illegal sexual contact with a minor.

Sentencing is set for January 25, 2016 at 10 a.m.

Hays basketball sweeps state ranked Pratt teams

Hays High was back on the basketball court 72 hours following the Hays City Shootout, to take on Pratt Tuesday night. The Hays High girls were coming off a third place showing to take on the #10 4A-D2 Lady Greenbacks. Both the boys teams entered the night ranked in their respective classes, Hays at #4 in 4A-D1 and Pratt at #2 in 4A-D2.

Hays 53 – Pratt 33

Hays trailed only once on their way to an easy win on Tuesday night. Pratt scored two points on the first possession of the game, which was followed up by a 16-3 Hays High run. The Indians made their first six shots and all eight of their first half free throws to grab a 31-13 lead. Savannah Schneider scored the first 11 points for the Indians and tied a career high 19 with four minutes remaining in the second quarter. Hays High also turned up the pressure on the defensive side, forcing 22 first half turnovers.

Highlights

The Indians pushed their lead as high as 25 on two occasions in the third quarter outscoring Pratt 13-7 for a second consecutive quarter. Hays led by as many as 28 in the fourth quarter and won 53-33. The Indians forced 38 turnovers in the game. The Indians played 15 in the game with 11 scoring.

Savannah Schneider was the only player in double figures, scoring a career high 23. The Lady Indians improve to 3-1 and play Junction City next Tuesday. Pratt falls to 0-2.

Hays 79 – Pratt 71 OT

Hays and Pratt battled to a two point game at half time with the Greenbacks leading 28-26. Hays led by six at two different points of the first quarter and 15-11 after eight minutes. Pratt took their first lead at 16-5, but Hays answered back with a 9-2 run to build the lead back up to six. Pratt got on their best run of the first half outscoring Hays 10-0 leading their lead up 28-24. Shane Berens hit a put back shot at the buzzer to get Hays with in two at 28-26 at half time.

Highlights

Hays and Pratt remained close in the third quarter switching the lead seven times and having the scored tied three times. Hays trailed 40-39 after three quarters. Hays fell behind by seven at 53-46 with 4:20 remaining in the game. Hays cut into the lead with six straight points and then took the lead at 56-55 when Shane Berens made the first of two free throws, but Claiborne Kyles rebounded a miss on the second attempt and sank a three pointer with 2:20 remaining. The two teams swapped the lead three more times with Pratt building their lead to five with eighteen seconds remaining at 63-58. Collyn Kreutzer banked in a three pointer with six seconds left. After a Hays time out and foul, Pratt hit one of two free throws to leave the window open for the Indians. Kreuzter was fouled on a three point attempt with nine-hundredths of a second left. Kreuzter hit the first free throw, Pratt took a full timeout, and then he sank the final two attempts to tie the game at 64. Pratt did get off a desperation heave that rimmed out from three quarters court.

Pratt took the only lead in overtime at 67-64, but Hays answered with fourteen straight points swapping the lead for a fifteenth and final time. Hays outscored the Greenbacks 15-7 in overtime taking the 79-71 win.

Noah Meyers for Pratt led all scoring with 25 and Samson Kohman added 18. Hays was led by Claiborne Kyles with 22, Collyn Kreutzer with 15, Tyrese Hill scored 11 and Shane Berens collected a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Hays is 4-0 on the season and returns to action in one week to take on Junction City. Pratt drops to 1-1.
