HAYS, Kan. – Joe Mapes and Alex King both homered as Fort Hays State overcame an early three-run deficit then held off a Northwest Missouri State rally for a 9-8 win and sweep the three-game MIAA series Saturday afternoon at Larks Park. The Tigers (23-26, 17-21 MIAA) won their final four and six of their last seven. The Bearcats (24-26, 19-20 MIAA) lost their sixth straight.

The Bearcats scored three in the third to take a 3-0 lead but the Tigers answered on Mapes three-run opposite field home run down the left field line in the fourth. Alex King followed two batters later with an opposite field solo shot to right to put FHSU up 4-3. The Tigers scored five in the fifth in singles from Alex Weiss, Joe Mapes, Alex King and Ty Redington.
The Bearcats rallied with a run in the sixth and and seventh, two in the eighth then a solo homer in the ninth.
Freshman Logan Herd allowed five runs (four earned) on 10 hits in five innings of relief for his fourth win of the season. Austin Unrein entered with one out in the ninth and picked up his second save in consecutive games.
King went 3-for-4 and drove in three while Mapes had two hits and knocked in four.
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The man who is creating a museum honoring daredevil Evel Knievel in Topeka says he expects it be a big draw.
Mike Patterson owns a Topeka Harley-Davidson dealership, which is being expanded to include a 16,000-square-foot area to house the museum.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Patterson is projecting the museum will draw 100,000 people a year. He says a two-month Knievel exhibit in Milwaukee drew 50,000 people from around the world.
Patterson says several exhibits will incorporate science, technology, engineering and math education. For example, one exhibit will detail the physics of planning one of Knievel’s jumps. Another will allow visitors to sit on a bike and create a virtual reality jump.
The museum is expected to open sometime this year.
MARION COUNTY – A Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 10a.m. on Saturday in Marion County.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1999 International Semi driven by Eriel Gonzalez-Mitre, 29, Hillsboro, was northbound on Kansas 15 two miles south of U.S. 56.
The driver saw there was a bridge and didn’t want to meet a southbound1996 International Semi driven by Joshua Caleb Meliza, 27, Hillsboro, with an oversized load.
Gonzalez-Mitre locked up the brakes on the semi. It slid across the centerline and struck the trailer load of Meliza’s semi.
Gonzalez-Mitre was transported to Newton Medical Center.
Meliza was not injured.
Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Pilgrim’s Pride is expanding a 5 million pound recall of cooked chicken products.
Federal food safety regulators say the latest expansion by the largest poultry producer in the U.S. includes a variety of chicken products potentially contaminated with foreign materials. Food inspectors have found items such as wood, plastic, rubber and metal.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Friday that there have been no “confirmed reports of adverse reactions” due to consuming the products. But consumers are still urged to throw away or return the products.
The latest recall involves products produced in 2015 between May 6 and Dec. 3.
Federal regulators say the problem was first discovered after the company received several consumer complaints regarding plastic contamination of chicken nuggets.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Royals announced today that the club has placed third baseman Mike Moustakas on the 15-day disabled list with a left thumb fracture, retroactive to May 5. In a corresponding move, the club has recalled infielder Chesler Cuthbert from Omaha (AAA).
Cuthbert, 23, was hitting .333 with four doubles, seven homers and 28 RBI in his first 24 games with the Storm Chasers.

Fort Hays State University supporters might want to catch the Kentucky Derby on TV Saturday.
A 3-year-old colt, Suddenbreakingnews, trained by Donnie Von Hemel — a Tiger alum and long-time scholarship donor — will be racing in the first leg of the Triple Crown.
Suddenbreakingnews hopes to make big news for Von Hemel, who grew up in tiny Manter in the southwest corner of Kansas.
Pre-race coverage of the derby starts at 3 p.m. Central time on NBC, with “the most exciting 2 minutes in sports” set to begin at 5:34.
Suddenbreakingnews will break out of the No. 2 pole position in the 142nd version of the “Run for the Roses” at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.
Von Hemel, who has more than 2,000 victories and $55 million in earnings to his name, graduated from Fort Hays State in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and went into the family business. He is the son of Don Von Hemel, a respected trainer now in his 80s.
Suddenbreakingnews has finished in the top two in all but one of his eight starts.
Hayley Bieker of the FHSU Foundation, said that Donnie Von Hemel, who now lives in Piedmont, Okla., is “a consistent donor to student scholarships.” Von Hemel will be recognized by the Foundation this year as a 20-year donor.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Jurors have sided with a Kanas anti-abortion activist by ruling that she didn’t intentionally seek to intimidate a doctor by sending a letter that suggested someone might place an explosive under the physician’s car.
The U.S. Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division sued Angel Dillard in 2011 for sending the letter to Dr. Mila Means, who had been training to offer abortions. At the time, no doctor was performing abortions in Wichita in the wake of the 2009 slaying of Dr. George Tiller by an abortion opponent.
Defense attorneys said it was constitutionally protected speech. The jury sided with Dillard on Friday.
The lawsuit was filed under a federal law aimed at protecting access to abortion services. Jurors were tasked with deciding whether the letter constituted a “true threat.”

ELLIS–The Honor Bell Foundation, based in Denver, is creating a community of veterans to foster public appreciation of military service and honor their fellow veterans with a proper, final tribute.
The first-ever Honor Bell is being made from metal artifacts, including military medals and pins, donated by families of deceased Colorado veterans.
The “Birth of the Bell” tour will stop in Ellis Saturday afternoon with the artifacts on its way to Cincinnati, Ohio, where the bell will be forged.
Ellis Police Chief and retired Army Ranger Taft Yates, said the public is invited to visit with Honor Bell Foundation founder and CEO, Lou Olivera–who is also a Vietnam vet–in the Fischer Liquor Store parking lot from 1:45 to 2:15 p.m. .
“These artifacts get melted into the material which becomes the bell,” Yates explained.
“The goal of the foundation–and it may take a very long time–is to have one of these 1,000 pound Honor Bells in every national cemetery in the U.S. They can be used at various ceremonies–Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Wreaths Across America–and military funerals.”
The “Birth of the Bell Tour” riders include Patriot Guard Riders, Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, VFW Warriors, American Legion Riders and others who ride along as far as they like.
The group is scheduled to arrive in Cincinnati Sunday, May 8, with foundry casting to begin Monday, May 9. The mold is expected to be broken Thu., May 12, to reveal the Honor Bell and prepare it for tuning, polishing and mounting.
Saturday, May 21–Armed Forces Day–the “Forged With Honor Tour” will begin the journey with the Honor Bell from Ohio home to Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
