The annual Hays High School FFA chapter plant sale is being held on April 19 and 22 from 3:30 to 6 p.m., and April 23 from 8 to 11 a.m.
The sale is located in the HHS E-Building Greenhouse located at the back of the entrance to the east parking lot. A sign will be posted on 13th Street directing traffic to the greenhouse.
“We grow the plants we sell and they are cared for by all FFA members and Mr. (Curt) Vajnar’s student aide, Jarett Pfannenstiel,” said Laura Montgomery, a junior and FFA officer.
Local gardeners will have plenty of stock to choose from. “There are approximately 400 trays of flowers and 50 trays of vegetables. We also have about 100 hanging pots,” Montgomery added.

The plant sale benefits scholarships for seniors, and also to send FFA members to contests, conventions and the Denver Stock Show.

The next event in the Fort Hays State University Sebelius Lecture Series is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center, promising to bring a unique experience to attendees as they hear from NASA astronauts James Lovell and Fred Haise along with mission control flight director Gene Krantz.
As astronauts during the Apollo program, Lovell and Haise were already well-known figures in the space program during the 1960s but their exploits during the failed Apollo 13 mission that were retold in the 1995 film “Apollo 13” brought all three into the national consciousness once again.
“I think we are going to see a lot of people interested,” said Vince Bowhay, assistant director of the Memorial Union for special events and student activities. “Several generations watched it happen live on TV, while another generation watched it be portrayed in a movie with Tom Hanks.”
The mission would have been the third to land people on the moon, but a rupture in an oxygen tank crippled the service module on the craft — 200,000 miles from earth.
The three men will recount their experiences during the lecture while also discussing the future of the U.S. space program.
“I think there is always a fascination with space and what our next steps in space are,” Bowhay said.
The Sebelius Lecture Series is named for former U.S. Rep Keith Sebelius, one of the most notable FHSU alumni, and is sponsored by approximately 200 patrons.

Starbucks fans rejoice — the wait is over. Starbucks, located in the Vine Street Dillons, opened Tuesday to a steady stream of traffic.
And the coffee shop is not the only thing shoppers in the location can look forward to, as a sushi bar, expanded deli and pharmacy have also been completed in the remodel that began in January.
But work continues throughout the store with products expected to be moved throughout the location on May 2 according to Don Koerner, store manager.
In the meantime, many portions of the remodel are complete and can be seen in new cooling units, expanded offerings and a new entrance on the south side of the building.
The south side entrance is expected to become the main entrance for the building, which opens to the expanded deli, Starbucks, sushi bar and floral department.
The area will also have seating for about 18 people and a larger selection of grab-and-go items.
It will be “very inviting,” Koerner said.
Work on the north entrance is expected to begin next week, he said, and will create a straight entrance into the store, similar to the new south entrance.
Near the north enterence is the pharmacy department, where work has been completed as well. Customers will now access the pharmacy from a wrap-around counter facing the west. They also have access to a new pharmacist consultation room.
While not there yet, the replacement of tile with polished concrete removes the need to use floor wax, and perishable items are donated rather than thrown away after they are removed from shelves for sale.
“Several years ago, Kroger joined the EPA’s Waste Wise Program and adopted the EPA’s ‘zero waste’ definition for our company-wide sustainability efforts,” according to the Kroger 2015 sustainability report. “Our goal is to ultimately meet and exceed the EPA’s ‘zero waste’ threshold of 90 percent in all our facilities.”
Even with new offerings throughout the store and as work continues, Koerner said customers can expect the “same great customer service” throughout the location.
Work at the location is expected to be completed this summer.

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — A former suburban Kansas City high school teacher has been ordered to serve 30 days in jail as part of her probation for having sex with a 16-year-old student.
The Kansas City Star reports that 33-year-old Jeana Marie Fleming was sentenced Tuesday in Johnson County District Court for unlawful sexual relations. Fleming also will be required to register as a sex offender.
Fleming and the boy had sex in December 2014 while she taught in the Olathe school district’s alternative education program for high school students.

NEWTON – Law enforcement authorities in Harvey County are investigating an accident involving a joy ride by two young children, according to a social media report.
Just before 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, police officers in Newton were called to the scene of an injury accident in the 200 block of Columbus Avenue.
Two 6-year-olds had driven their mother’s truck three blocks.
During their drive, the vehicle struck five other vehicles and two mailboxes. The children were not seriously injured.
Police used their unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to investigate due to the unique nature of the case, and the accident scene encompassing such a large area.
An aerial view where locations of vehicles could be quickly documented via GPS, and their relationship recorded via video camera greatly assisted the investigation.
The use of the UAV notification is made in accordance with the commitment to transparency by Newton Police.
HOUSTON (AP) – Lorenzo Cain hit a three-run homer in the first inning, and the Kansas City Royals held on for a 3-2 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night.
Alcides Escobar and Mike Moustakas hit consecutive singles to start the game before Cain connected on a full-count, 91-mph fastball off Mike Fiers (0-1) to make it 3-0.
The Astros got within 1 in the bottom of the inning after an RBI double by Colby Rasmus followed by a run-scoring single by Tyler White.
Kris Medlen (1-0) allowed six hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in five innings in his 2016 debut. Wade Davis walked two players with one out in the ninth before retiring Jose Altuve and George Springer for his third save.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Fort Hays State saw its road woes continue on Tuesday (Apr. 12), falling twice to Oklahoma Christian in non-conference action. The Tigers fell by scores of 1-0 and 5-2, seeing their road losing streak grow to 11 games. FHSU is now 17-28 overall. Oklahoma Christian improved to 21-23.
Game 1: Oklahoma Christian 1, Fort Hays State 0
The Tigers suffered their eighth walk-off loss in their last 11 road games by failing to get a runner past second base in a 1-0 loss. Pitcher Paxton Duran held Oklahoma Christian scoreless through the first six innings, but could not extend the game in the seventh when OCU loaded the bases with no outs and pushed the winning run across with a one-out single.
The Tigers had just four hits and a pair of walks off Oklahoma Christian’s Madison Hagood. The bottom of the Tiger lineup (batters No. 6 through 9 in the order) struggled going 0-for-10 at the plate in the game. Hagood struck out three Tiger batters.
Duran allowed six hits and a walk, while striking out eight in the tough-luck loss.
Game 2: Oklahoma Christian 5, Fort Hays State 2
Fort Hays State enjoyed a 2-1 lead for three innings before Oklahoma Christian rallied past in the fifth. The Tigers benefitted from a pair of Oklahoma Christian errors in the second to plate their only runs of the day.
Oklahoma Christian took the lead early with a run in the first, but the Tigers rallied with two outs in the second. With two outs, Mackenzie Villarreal hit a double and then an error by the Oklahoma Christian right fielder off the bat of Madeline LaPolla plated Villarreal to tie the game at 1-1. Then Erin Elmore reached on an error by the shortstop that allowed LaPolla to come around to score from second to give FHSU its first lead.
After benefitting errors to take the lead, FHSU committed an error in the fifth that gave the lead back to Oklahoma Christian. Carrie Clarke surrendered a two-out RBI single that tied the game, but then a fielding miscue off the bat of Haley Squier allowed the go ahead run to come all the way around from first to score. Oklahoma Christian tacked on a two-run home run in the sixth to go on and win 5-2.
Clarke gave up five runs (three earned) on eight hits and a walk. She struck out one batter. Kaylie Upton picked up the win for Oklahoma Christian, throwing a complete game with just five hits and a walk allowed.
Fort Hays State now turns its focus to its final MIAA doubleheader of the season against Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, April 23 in Kearney. Currently sitting in seventh place, Fort Hays State will look to earn a berth into the MIAA Tournament in Oklahoma City. The top eight teams in the conference standings qualify. The Tigers will likely need to end their current road skid to do so, but several other conference games will shape the picture of the conference standings in the next 10 days. FHSU will have a better idea of what it needs to do to get in late next week.

MANHATTAN – A Kansas man made his first court appearance on Tuesday in Riley County in connection with an alleged attempted abduction.
Sergio Guerra, 38, of Wichita, spoke to the judge via a video connection.
He was arrested following an incident on March 24 where he allegedly attempted to abduct a 19-year-old woman.
She sustained significant non-life threatening injuries after being dragged by her vehicle for approximately 800 feet while attempting to flee an attacker, according to a police report.
Officers found that an unknown Hispanic male approached the woman while she attempted to start her car in the 500 block of Richards Drive in Manhattan.
The suspect entered her vehicle and attempted to drive off with her inside. She attempted to escape, however, was unable to completely exit through the passenger side door and fell to the ground while a portion of her body was still inside. The suspect fled the scene and law enforcement later recovered the vehicle.
On March 26, detectives with the Riley County Police Department Investigations Division identified the suspect and with the assistance of the Wichita Police Department were able to locate and arrest Guerra.
He is being held for aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery, and aggravated battery on a bond of $500,000.00
