Hydrant flushing resumes in east Hays Thursday

hydrants 040416HFD

UPDATE: Inspections and flushing of hydrants originally scheduled for Monday, April 4, were not completed that day and are now scheduled for Thursday, April 7.
——————————

The Hays Fire Department is inspecting fire hydrants and flushing water mains today, April 7, in the area of Indian Trail to Canterbury between 22nd Street and 27th Streets.

This is part of a coordinated effort by the city of Hays to inspect all fire hydrants in the city and flush all water mains annually.

Inspecting fire hydrants ensures that the valves operate properly and that there is no damage or obstructions that will prevent or interfere with the prompt use of fire hydrants in an emergency.

Firefighters are also checking the pressure and volume of water mains in each neighborhood for firefighting purposes. The associated flushing of water mains allows chlorine to be distributed throughout the system to eliminate bio-filming in the water mains.

Slight discoloration of the water supply may be encountered although there will be no health risks to the consumer. All reasonable efforts will be taken to minimize the inconvenience to the public. Drivers are asked to avoid driving through water discharging from a fire hydrant during the short flushing period.

For more information, call the Hays Fire Department at (785) 628-7330.

The Forum: U.S., Cuba relations deeply personal for FHSU president

Following the first visit to Cuba by an American president in nearly a century — and continued normalization of relations between the U.S. and the communist island nation — Fort Hays State University President Mirta M. Martin talked about the changes with Eagle’s Gary Shorman.

In a very special edition of “The Forum,” Martin, a native of Cuba, offered an emotional recollection of the past — and the need for a “day of reckoning” for the Castro brothers and a free Cuba. Watch the entire interview below:

KFIX Rock News: Steven Tyler Says Aerosmith Probably Will Launch a Farewell Tour Next Year

yFAUCCNLKSsWOFaxBkfwrm125UE@200x200As Steven Tyler prepares to release his debut solo album, a country-flavored project that’s due out this summer, the Aerosmith frontman reports that the band will return to the road next year for what may be the legendary rockers’ final tour.

“I’m doing 30 [solo] shows from May until August,” Tyler revealed toRolling Stone.

“And then in 2017 we go out with Aerosmith. We’re probably doing a farewell tour.”

The 68-year-old singer then backtracked a bit, adding, “Look, there’s two bands that still have the original members, us and the Stones. I’m grateful for that. Whether we do a farewell tour or go into the studio and do another record, I’m just excited about it.”

Of course original Stone Brian Jones died in 1969, and original bass player Bill Wyman retired from the band in 1993, and there are other classic rock acts still touring with all their original members like ZZ Top and U2.

Some tensions apparently emerged recently between Tyler and his longtime songwriting partner, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, after Perry made some critical comments to USA Today directed at Steven’s recent solo single “Red, White & You.”

“If I didn’t know him when I heard the song I’d go, ‘It’s OK, next,'” Perry told the newspaper in February. “He’s got a f****** rhinestone cowboy hat going, ‘Yippee ki yay.’ I don’t know what else to say about that.”

Tyler initially responded to Perry’s critique by suggesting that he thought Joe was jealous, but he took things more in stride when talking with Rolling Stone about the gibe.

“I’ve read what Joe has said, but then I really, really, couldn’t be here doing what I’m doing now if it wasn’t for Joe Perry,” Steven maintained. “It’s a strange catch-22, but if you slow down enough you get to see it…. I wouldn’t be anywhere without those guys, so I’m as grateful as I can be.”
