William Weston Artz

4026274William Weston Artz was born August 10, 1977 in Hays, Kansas, to Ken & Linda Artz. He completed their family and brought immense joy, light, and laughter into their lives. On Tuesday, November 22, 2016, he passed away unexpectedly at the West Anaheim Medical Center in Anaheim, CA at the age of 39.

Will accepted Jesus as his Lord & Savior at an early age while attending the Englewood Wesleyan Church in Phillips County. As a boy he loved living on the farm next to his Grandma & Grandpa Artz where he enjoyed riding on the tractor with his Grandpa. He also enjoyed raising bucket calves and riding his Welch pony named Sunny Pony. But sometimes Sunny’s disposition wasn’t so sunny, and when Will would get on his back, Sunny Pony would head for the pond and roll in the water, baptizing Will by total immersion.

In the summer of 1983 our family hosted an exchange student, Ola Sjolander, from Kramfors, Sweden. He became like a son to us and brother & friend to Will, and still is to this day. He and his family – wife, Mika, and son, John – are an integral part of our life and Will’s life and memory.

Will was an active member of the Iowa Union 4-H Club and Boy Scouts, was trained and excelled in taekwondo karate, and was actively involved with the City Park Project in Phillipsburg.

Will attended Phillipsburg schools and graduated with the P.H.S. class of 1996. In high school he loved playing football and studying American History. He was fiercely patriotic and proud to be an American. After graduation he attended Fort Hays State University on a track scholarship and graduated with honors in the spring of 2001. Later he trained and worked with the Phillips County EMS, earning an EMT-I status.

In his early adult years he farmed with his Dad, specializing in alfalfa production. Will & Ken also enjoyed their “Harley” trips to Sturgis and Grove, Oklahoma, touring the Green Country Tri-State Area with friends, Ed & Kendra DeClue.

Several years ago Will moved to Orange County, CA where he entered the program offered at “Hope By The Sea”. He completed their program and entered college to become an addiction specialist for the state of California. His license, CATC 3, enabled him to become a counselor, addiction specialist, and friend to many.

One of his closest friends in California, Aaron Estrada, was a monumental force in Will’s life. Sunday mornings would find Will accompanying Aaron’s family to the South Coast Christian Church and on Friday nights attending a faith-based 12-step program.

Since his sudden passing, Will’s Facebook page has been full of messages & testimonials like the following one: “I am at a loss for words right now. You will never know how much I appreciated you for saving my life. You always knew what to say when I was struggling. You saved so many lives from this disease. Rest in peace, brother. You will be missed by so many.”

Left to mourn are his loving parents, Ken & Linda Artz of Phillipsburg, KS; his Swedish family, Ola, Mika and John, of Taby, Sweden; his aunt & uncle, Jackie & Steve “Pete” Horacek of Almena, KS; a host of loving cousins and innumerable friends.

Cremation was chosen. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, December 3 at 2:00 p.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Aaron Rust officiating.

Friends may sign the book from 9:00 to 9:00 Thursday and Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hope By The Sea.

Kay’s life adventures took her to California and then settled in Nevada for 45 years before returning to Kansas. Her office, secretarial skills, and self employment kept her busy until retirement. Her travels during these years took her to Europe, Ireland, Russia, Alaska and 18 months in Africa.

She truly believed in “Busy Hands, Happy Heart”. Her love of sewing, knitting, crocheting and embroidery produced many beautiful creations. As an avid quilter, Kay was a charter member of both Truckee Meadows Quilters in Reno, Nevada and Crossroads Quilters in Stockton, Kansas. Osawatomie State Mental HospitalKANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — An employee at Osawatomie State Hospital is suing the state of Kansas after she allegedly was raped at the institution.

The Kansas City Star reports the woman says in the lawsuit that she was raped while working at the hospital in October 2015. She says she was not aware the man had made “multiple” attempts to strangle his wife and was involuntarily admitted to the hospital because it was likely he could cause injury or abuse to himself or others.

**********

The album debuts “White Christmas Blue,” a future yuletide classic newly penned by Loretta Lynn and Grammy Award winner Shawn Camp (who’s written #1 country hits for Garth Brooks, Josh Turner and Brooks & Dunn, collaborated with Loretta since 2007, and provides acoustic guitar and backing vocals on White Christmas Blue). White Christmas Blue is the second volume of the Cash Cabin Recordings and part of a planned multi-album deal with Legacy Recordings (a division of Sony Music Entertainment).

Loretta’s first collection of seasonal songs since 1966 (and her second release this year for Legacy), White Christmas Blue premieres 12 studio performances including new versions of two original compositions (“Country Christmas” and “To Heck with Ole Santa Claus”) which first appeared on Country Christmas; soulful interpretations of traditional carols (“Away in a Manger,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “Silent Night”); in-the-moment contemporary takes on seasonal pop standards (“Winter Wonderland,” “Frosty the Snowman,” “Jingle Bells,” “White Christmas”) and the title track. The album concludes with Loretta’s heartfelt recitation of the beloved seasonal story “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

White Christmas Blue is the celebratory successor to Loretta’s first Legacy release, Full Circle (her 40th Top 10 country album and her highest-charting album ever on the Billboard 200). At the time of Full Circle’s release, in March 2016, it had been more than a decade since Loretta Lynn had recorded or released any new studio music. An emotional and personal journey through Christmases past, present and future, White Christmas Blue is an essential addition to any Loretta
Lynn library or holiday album collection.

Like Full Circle, White Christmas Blue pays homage to Loretta’s deepest musical roots and influences and was recorded at the Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee, produced by Patsy Lynn Russell and John Carter Cash.

About Loretta Lynn
Loretta Lynn has long been established as the undisputed Queen of Country Music, with more than 50 years of recording and touring to her name. A self-taught guitarist and songwriter, Lynn was one of the most distinctive performers in Nashville in the 1960s and 1970s. She shook up Nashville by writing her own songs, many of which tackled boundary-pushing topics drawn from her own life experiences as a wife and mother. “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” “Fist City” and “Don’t Come Home A’ Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind)” are just three of 16 country No. 1 singles. Lynn is also one of the most awarded musicians of all time. She has been inducted into more music Halls of Fame than any female recording artist, including The Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and was the first woman to be named the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year in 1972. Lynn received Kennedy Center Honors in 2003 and a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. In 2015, she was named recipient of Billboard’s inaugural Women in Music “Legend” Award. Lynn has won four Grammy Awards (including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010) and sold more than 45 million records worldwide.

Ward-photo Reno Co.
Ward-photo Reno Co.

RENO COUNTY — A Reno County jury on Wednesday found a Kansas man guilty of two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and a misdemeanor count of intimidation of a witness.

The jury determined Tanner Ward, 23, Hutchinson, was not guilty of aggravated burglary and criminal threat, according to District Attorney Keith Schroeder.

The indecent liberties charges from January involved a child 14 to 16 years of age.

The aggravated burglary charges was over Ward allegedly going into a home in the 100 block of East 5th Street in Hutchinson to allegedly intimidate a victim or for a sexually motivated crime.

The victim’s mother said she found him laying on her daughters bed. He was later found inside the garage of that home when police arrived.
The final charge of criminal threat is alleged to have occurred on Feb. 15 when Ward allegedly threatened to cut another person’s head off.

Saying once all this is over, he would go to the victim’s mother’s home and take care of her. In a conversation with his ex, he makes the statement, “off with her head, according to testimony.

Sentencing is scheduled for January.
