Chiefs beat Broncos in overtime

DENVER (AP) – Cairo Santos’ 34-yard field goal hit the left upright and bounced through as the overtime period expired Sunday night to give the Kansas Chiefs a 30-27 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday night.

That avoided the third tie in the NFL this season, something that hasn’t happened since 1973 before the league introduced overtime.

The winner followed a risky move by Broncos coach Gary Kubiak, who sent his kicker out for a 62-yard try with 1:01 left only to see Brandon McManus – who has hit from 70 yards in training camp – come up short.

“It’s on me,” Kubiak said, explaining he made the move because he had confidence in his kicker even with a new long snapper who joined the team on Friday. “We didn’t have any doubt that he could get the ball there. The thought process was on the other end: if we do punt, do we get the ball back?”

McManus practically begged to get a crack at the 62-yarder.

“That’s still well within my range. I just kind of hit the ground,” he said. “From that distance, everything kind of needs to be perfect just because of how far you are away. It didn’t happen for me.”

Instead of having to go 80 yards or more, however, the Chiefs got the ball at the Denver 48 with one timeout and just over a minute remaining. The Chiefs reached the Denver 16 before Santos ended the snoozer-turned-thriller in perfect fashion. Even his teammates hesitated as they ran out to celebrate, unsure if the ball had clanked through or not with the stadium rocking as if it hadn’t.

The Chiefs (8-3) kept up with the Oakland Raiders (9-2) in the AFC West race and the Broncos (7-4) could find themselves fighting for a wild card now.

Both teams kicked field goals on their opening possession of overtime, McManus from 44 yards and Santos from 37.

That followed Kansas City’s amazing tying drive in the final 3 minutes of regulation.

Alex Smith threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to rookie Tyreek Hill and a 2-point conversion pass to tight end Demetrius Harris with 12 seconds left to tie it at 24.

Hill’s third touchdown of the night capped a 13-play, 75-yard drive that included three defensive penalties, a fourth-and-10 conversion at the Broncos 3 and zero Kansas City timeouts.

The Chiefs had burned their last two timeouts just before Trevor Siemian’s 76-yard touchdown toss to Bennie Fowler, who got behind cornerback Phillip Gaines with three minutes left that seemingly sealed Denver’s win.

Siemian threw for 368 yards and three TDs with no interceptions in his best game as a pro. But he was sacked five times as his O-line proved just as porous as it has all season even after team made better protection a priority following at their bye.

The game turned into the white knuckler the NFL expected when it flexed the AFC West showdown to Sunday night rather than having the Patriots-Jets game in prime time as originally scheduled.

But the first half was laborious – Kansas City managed just 49 yards of offense but led 9-3 thanks to a safety and Hill’s 86-yard touchdown return on the ensuing free kick.

Smith finished 26 of 44 for 220 yards with one TD and six sacks, half of them by Von Miller.

INJURY UPDATE Denver RB Kapri Bibbs was evaluated for a concussion after a helmet-to-helmet hit from S Eric Berry but returned later in the first quarter. Houston left for a few series but returned and the Chiefs never announced what his injury was.

Kan. electors get thousands of emails ahead of Electoral College vote

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — Kansans who will cast presidential Electoral College votes have been getting scores of emails ahead of the Dec. 19 vote.

Kansas Republican Party Chairman Kelly Arnold and outgoing State Rep. Mark Kahrs have each received more than 25,000 emails. The Hutchinson News reports Republican Ashley McMillan Hutchinson responded to some of the emails flooding her inbox until they crashed the email server last weekend.

Arnold says some messages urge him to vote for Clinton or to abstain or to vote for another Republican.

In Kansas, electors aren’t bound by law or under threat of penalty if they switch.

But Clayton Barker, Kansas Republican Party Executive Director, and also an elector, says the party selects electors who are reliable to vote for the winner of the state’s popular vote.

Ronald ‘Ron’ Wayne Gilliland

screen-shot-2016-11-27-at-11-04-48-amRonald “Ron” Wayne Gilliland passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at his home in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 80. He was born on January 6, 1936 on the farm in Rooks County north of Zurich, Kansas to the late Harold “Ike” and Estella “Stella” (Bane) Gilliland. He graduated high school, went on to attend Fort Hays State College before serving in the United States Army. On December 26, 1958 he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Gaunt in Great Bend, Kansas. They were blessed with three sons, Phil, Todd, and Drew.

Ron was owner of Farm Implement & Supply Co., Inc. of Plainville, from which he retired, along with farming, which he took up in his later years. He loved his family, friends, and neighbors and was an avid supporter of the community. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Men, Isis Shrine, Masonic Paradise Lodge #290, and the Lions Club. He was a past member of the Rooks County Health Center Hospital Board which he served on for over 12 years, Boy Scout Leader, and Booster Club.

Ron enjoyed sports, especially Kansas University Basketball, Kansas City Chiefs Football, and Kansas City Royals Baseball. He liked being outdoors to enjoy an occasional hunt, was an avid golfer, and of course had his own “special way” of mowing the grass. But the time he cherished the most was spent with his family, most especially his grandchildren; from watching their sporting events, to holidays, or just being together for no special reason at all, his heart was happiest when he was with the ones he loved the most.

Ron is survived by his wife Mary Lou Gilliland of the home in Plainville; sons Phil Gilliland and wife Brenda of Concordia, Todd Gilliland and wife Tina of Plainville, and Drew Gilliland and wife Colette of Gold Hill, OR; brother Barry Gilliland and wife Donna of Plainville; sister Carolyn Metcalf and husband Don of Plainville; step-mother Lucy Gilliland of Plainville; grandchildren Ryan Gilliland of Topeka, Eric Gilliland of Concordia, Mallory Gilliland of Lawrence, Harrison Gilliland of Plainville, Rachel Gilliland of Plainville, and Mary Gilliland of Plainville, Ike Gilliland of Gold Hill, OR, Annie Gilliland of Gold Hill, OR, and Andy Brown of Plainville; and great-grandchildren Jack Gilliland, Nolan Gilliland, and Reed Gilliland.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ike and Stella Gilliland, and great-granddaughter Hattie Jo Gilliland.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, November 28, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Plainville. Burial will follow in the Plainville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 pm on Sunday at the funeral home with family receiving friends from 5:00-7:00 pm.

It is said of Masons that they ever meet upon the level, act upon the plumb, and part upon the square. Ron showed by daily example what it means to be a man of integrity and uprightness before God and man, full of love, compassion, and a willingness to help anyone in need. Although he will be greatly missed, we rejoice that he has now become a living stone, in that spiritual house, not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

Kansas appeals court orders new hearing in 2008 killing

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas appellate court says a woman serving a 14-year sentence for a 2008 beating death can challenge her conviction on claims that her trial attorney was ineffective.
The Lawrence Journal-World reports a Kansas Court of Appeals panel on Wednesday sent Shanna Friday’s case back to Douglas County to allow her to argue that the trial court wrongly admitted her questioned taped confession into evidence.

Friday also insists a court-appointed attorney failed to adequately challenge that confession.

Friday was convicted of killing 62-year-old Jerry Lee Deshazer at his Lawrence home.

The Kansas Supreme Court upheld her conviction in 2013. But the appeals court ruled that the trial court didn’t properly consider her motion to suppress the confession.
