Hays sweeps South Cougars Tuesday night

Dustin Armbruster

Hays High headed to Salina South High School on Tuesday night to close out the January portion of their basketball schedule. For the Lady Indians it was their fourth game in six days. On the boys side it was just their second and final game over the course of 19 days.

Girls
Hays 39
– Salina South 27

Hays overcame a five plus minute field goal drought to grab an 8-6 lead over South after the first quarter. After scoring the final three points of the first quarter, the Indians added the first eleven of the second quarter for a 15-0 run. That run pushed Hays to their biggest lead of the first half at 19-6. That lead occurred at the 5:02 mark, but Hays would score just one more point the rest of the half. South went on a 10-1 run during that stretch to get back within four at half time, 20-16. Over their second five minute field goal drought of the first half the Indians missed seven of eight free throws.

Highlights

South expanded that 10-1 run from the first half into a 15-1 run, grabbing their only second half lead at 21-20. The Indians tied the game on a free throw then took the lead for good on a Talyn Kleweno steal and layup at 23-21. Hays turned those three points into a 11-0 run that lasted into the fourth quarter and put the Indians up 31-21. Overall Hays outscored the Cougars 19-6 after falling behind and win 39-27.

Coach Kirk Maska

Hays was led by Jaycee Dale with 12 points and Mattie Hutchison at 10. The Indians had three players each grab eight or more rebounds, 10 by Talyn Kleweno and eight each by Jaycee Dale and Kallie Leiker. The Indians move to 9-4 on the season. South drops to 5-8. The Lady Indians are on the road to Wichita to play Life Prep Academy on Friday.

Boys
Hays 57 – Salina South 49

Hays never trailed in the first half using a 10-3 run over the final three minutes of the first quarter to build their lead up to 18-9. The Indians led South by as many as 13 in the second quarter before the Cougars went on their best run of the half. A 8-0 nothing cut the Hays lead down to five at 23-18 with 3:40 left in the second quarter. The Indians closed out the half outscoring South 9-4 and led 32-22 at the break.

Highlights

Hays opened the second half with a three pointer to build their lead up to 13 once again. South though outscored Hays 22-3 over the next six minutes to match their first half point total and take a 44-38 advantage. Shane Berens and Xander Swayne scored in the final minute for Hays to cut their deficit to 44-42 after three quarters. Defensively the Indians allowed just five fourth quarter points and none over the final 5:25 after South took their final lead at 49-48. Swayne scored the next four points for the Indians and Hays finished the game on a 9-0 run to win 57-49.

Coach Rick Keltner

Hays picks up their tenth win of the year and sits at 10-3. Salina South drops to 5-9. The Indians were led by Claiborne Kyles with 17, including four three pointers. Shane Berens added 12 points and becomes the 29th player in program history to score 500 points in a career. Devin Johnson led the Cougars with 21. The Hays boys are off until February 9th when they travel back to Salina to play the Central Mustangs.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump nomination of Neil Gorsuch to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court (all times EDT):
8:04 p.m.
President Donald Trump has nominated federal appeals judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.

The 49-year-old Gorsuch has served on the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver since 2006, after being appointed by President George W. Bush. He once worked at the Supreme Court as a law clerk.

If approved by the Senate, Gorsuch would take the seat left vacant since Justice Antonin Scalia died last year. Republicans refused to consider President Barack Obama’s nominee for the seat, saying the choice should go Obama’s successor.
He would be the youngest justice since Clarence Thomas joined the court in 1991 at age 43.

Kansas pilot program to improve rural food access

Former grocery store in St. John-google image

ST. JOHN, Kan. (AP) — The Sunflower Foundation has approved a statewide pilot program to help fund community-based strategies for addressing food access in rural Kansas.

The $120,000 pilot project called Project HERO — Healthy Eating: Rural Opportunities is planning to initially fund efforts in eight communities.

The 12-month pilot is allowing St. John to receive a $60,000 Sunflower grant to open a grocery store in the town of less than 1,300 people. Stafford County Economic Development Executive Director Carolyn Dunn says that after the town’s only grocery store closed almost one year ago, residents have had to drive 12 miles into Stafford to find the closest grocery.

GROW Hodgeman and the Harvey County Food and Farm Council are also receiving HERO grants.

REMINDER: Brews on the Bricks tickets to go on sale Feb. 1

Hays Post

Brews on the Bricks is a festival that is more than just a celebration of good craft beer, but rather a spotlight on the art of brewing.

The second annual Brews on the Bricks, an event hosted by the Downtown Hays Development Corp. and sponsored by Eagle Communications, was such an overwhelming success in its inaugural year that it is back, better and bigger, according Sara Bloom, DHDC executive director.

“Its the biggest craft beer festival in the area, and we will have more brewers than we did last year,” she said.

The festival is 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 8 at 10th and Main in downtown Hays.

Tickets go on sale Feb. 1, and Bloom is expecting to be sold out in just hours.

Last year, Bloom said, 500 tickets were sold in less than four hours and the VIP tickets sold out in 15 minutes.

“We anticipate that, in one day, the tickets will be sold out again and sold out fast,” she said.

With the anticipation of the high numbers for this year’s festival, DHDC has increased the number of tickets available.

bricksBloom said the number of VIP tickets has doubled this year so now there are 150 VIP tickets available. Also, the general admission tickets was raised from 500 to 600, she said.

This year, VIP tickets will be $75.

A VIP ticket gets you a Q&A with the brewers, a four-course meal, pairings with four brewers that will not be available via general admission and a full beer stein sampling glass. VIP tickets also allow entry an hour prior to general admission.

General admission tickets are $35, which gets you into the sampling tent from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and a sampling glass.

There is also a designated driver ticket, Bloom said, that will allow entry to the event — but also comes with a wrist band that will bar beer tasting.

Tickets can be purchased at downtownhays.com and DHDC offices at 106 W. 12th. Or call (785) 621-4171 for tickets or more information.

Bloom said there are already people who have notified her they will be camping out outside of the DHDC offices to get an early jump on purchasing tickets.

Last year, there were 13 breweries from seven states coming from as far as Indiana, but this year Bloom expects 25 brewers.

“Last year, they found out about this event and wanted to be a part of it, and we are anticipating the same for this year,” Bloom said.

Registration has been open for less than a week and already three breweries are on board for the festival, but Bloom knows of at least 15 more that will be participating.

“Defiance is doing a collaboration with 15 Kansas breweries that have agreed to come to Hays the Friday before the event, and they will actually spend that day coming together and making one beer that will then be distributed all over the state,” Bloom said.

The 15 breweries working on the collaboration then will participate in the festival the next day.

Live music and food will also be a part of the festival.

As of now, Bloom said a band has not been booked, but the hope is to have them booked by the end of the month. They do plan to invite the McPherson Pipe Band to kick off the ceremony.

The food will be provided by several vendors throughout the state, she added.

OSAGE COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities in Osage County are investigating two suspects on burglary charges.

Just after 11:30 pm Sunday, the Osage County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a resident in the 3000 block of East 137th Street reporting a burglary in progress at his home, according to a media release.

The victim arrived home to find two women inside of his residence attempting to remove property. As the suspects fled, the victim provided descriptions of the suspects and their vehicle to dispatchers.

Within four minutes of the 911 call, an Osage County Sheriff’s deputy spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s and conducted a car stop at 137th Street and south California Road.

Deputies took the two suspects into custody. They were identified as Jaime Lee Cowan, 36, Topeka, and Laura Ann Barnhart, 31, Hiawatha.

They were booked into the Osage County Jail on charges of aggravated burglary. Barnhart was also charged with interference with law enforcement after giving a false name.

Civil Air Patrol officer: Kan. Rep. should ‘swing from a tree’

State Representative 19th District- Stephanie Clayton

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A lieutenant colonel in Kansas’ Civil Air Patrol said in a Facebook post that a state lawmaker should “swing from a tree” for introducing a bill that would undo a law allowing concealed weapons on college campuses starting in July.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that Jonathan Holder affirmed he was the person who posted the message earlier this month. Holder said in the initial post that he was offended that Republican Rep. Stephanie Clayton, of Overland Park, proposed legislation that would undermine his constitutional rights.

Kansas Adjutant General’s Department spokeswoman Katie Horner said the agency “does not condone the statements.” The department oversees the Air Patrol’s budget but not its operations.

Overland Park Police Officer John Lacy says the case remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.

Updated handbook on Kansas Medicaid program released by KHI

ks-medicaid-2017KHI

TOPEKA–For the 2017 Kansas legislative session, the Kansas Health Institute and Kansas Legislative Research Department have released Kansas Medicaid: A Primer 2017, an in-depth “handbook” describing the Kansas Medicaid program. It provides basic facts, history and trends surrounding Kansas Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). This is the fourth edition of the Primer, following 2005, 2009 and 2014 versions.

The Medicaid system in Kansas has experienced significant change since the last edition of the Primer in 2014. KanCare—the state’s comprehensive managed care program—has matured and new federal rules about the management of the program have been released. Additionally, changes driven by the continued implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) have had effects on enrollment and costs in Kansas.

The Primer includes:

  • Overviews of Medicaid, CHIP and KanCare
  • Information about services and populations covered in Kansas
  • Analysis of recent Kansas enrollment trends
  • Summary of program expenditures in Kansas.

More change may be on the horizon for Medicaid with a new administration and Congress assuming control in Washington. Understanding the current system may be helpful to policymakers as they consider policy decisions in Kansas.

Suspect in alleged Kan. domestic terror plot seeks freedom

Gavin Wright, Curtis Allen and Patrick Stein are charged with domestic terrorism

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man accused of plotting to attack Somali immigrants has asked a judge to free him pending trial.

A defense motion filed Tuesday asks U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren to review the detention order for Patrick Stein, whom prosecutors say was the leader of a militia group called “The Crusaders.”

In October, U.S. Magistrate Judge Gwynne Birzer had ordered Stein held in jail until his trial, finding he poses “a grave danger” to the community.

Prosecutors say Stein along with co-defendants Gavin Wright and Curtis Allen conspired to detonate truck bombs at an apartment complex where 120 Somali immigrants live in the meatpacking town of Garden City. One unit is used as a mosque.

They have pleaded not guilty to conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction.
