🎥 Kansas regains a voice on House Ag Committee

WASHINGTON -Congressman Roger Marshall, M.D., will serve as a member of the House Committee on Agriculture for the 115th United States Congress.  He was selected on Tuesday.

“We committed to getting the Big 1st a seat back on the Ag Committee,” Congressman Marshall said. “I’m proud to be able to say today that we have delivered on that promise.”

Ag leaders from across the state weighed in on the news:

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Marshall to the House Agriculture Committee. The Big First in Kansas has a long history on the committee, including two former chairmen, Clifford Hope and Pat Roberts, and a long list of other distinguished leaders including Bob Dole and Jerry Moran. The district is among the largest agricultural producing congressional districts in the nation. We look forward to working with Dr. Marshall and the Committee to advance the interests of farmers, ranchers and rural Americans.”

Richard Felts – President, Kansas Farm Bureau

“The appointment of Congressman Marshall to the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture could not have come at a more important time. His input on behalf of Kansas livestock producers will be vital as Congress deals with serious issues including onerous regulations and a new Farm Bill.”

Matt Teagarden – CEO, Kansas Livestock Association

The House Ag Committee will see important legislation in the 115th Congress, such as the formation of the next Farm Bill, which will impact crop insurance and insure a safe, reliable, affordable food source. The Committee will also take up issues regarding trade in the coming year. The Big 1st District of Kansas has maintained a seat on the House Ag Committee for the last century, with the exception of the last 3 years.

Congressman Marshall was also selected to the Committee on Science and Technology.

Clinkscales: New Year’s Surprise

Randy Clinkscales
Randy Clinkscales

I have been fortunate that my children, all adults, live close to me.  My oldest son, Josh, works in my office. My middle son, Ben, lives with us and just graduated from nursing school.  My youngest son, Dan, and his wife, Caley, live in Wichita. About a year ago, Dan started a new job with a large medical supply company.

While I was thankful at Christmas for my good fortune of having all of my family together, I have been well aware that all of this could change – Ben could get a nursing job elsewhere, and Dan’s company could transfer him.

I was not surprised when Dan contacted me to let me know he was interviewing with other positions with his employer that would involve moving to either New Mexico, North Carolina or Minnesota. My heart sank, but I bit my tongue. He wanted to discuss it with my wife and I.

One of the most difficult parts, for me, about the second half of life is letting go of our children. Raising my children was the best job I ever had. When they were young, I scaled back my work to coach them in soccer and to attend all of their events.

When I was young, I played football in a small town – one where the fans and parents would park their cars around the football field.  They would watch from the hood of the cars, or if cold or rainy, from inside their cars.  When something great happened, they would all join in honking their horns in one chorus.

I can still remember my stepfather in the end-zone, acting as proud of me as if I were his own son.  He was at every event.  Just him being there was important for me.

As I grew into adulthood, he was always there for me.  In retrospect, I admire how he would give me his advice, but would always let me know that the decisions were mine.  So, it was always important for me to be there for my kids as they grew – supporting them in good and in bad times, just as my stepfather had.

There is a saying from a movie: “No matter how old you get, you’re always a parent”.  As we grow older, there sure is a tendency to want to do more than just “be there” for our kids.  We must fight the tendency to want to continue to manage our children as if they were still children.  I fight that myself.

Part of the second half of life is being there for our children, just as my stepfather was.  Yet, we need to let them make their own decisions, good or bad, but with our gentle advice – and always our support.

My wife and I went to meet with Dan and Caley about their possible move.  They went through the various options, leaning more towards North Carolina.  In my head, I wanted to scream, “Don’t go”, but I had to let them do what was best for them.

Then they said, “We’re not going to do anything since WE ARE HAVING A BABY, and you’re both going to be grandparents.”

What a New Year’s surprise—our first grandchild (and I will be a “great” grandfather).

I hope your New Year is full of great surprises.  Mine sure got off on the right foot.

Ellis FFA Chapter will have annual labor auction next month

ffa-logoSubmitted

ELLIS – The Ellis FFA Chapter will be holding its annual labor auction on Sunday, February 5th, at 3:00 p.m. in the Ellis High School lobby. We have held the labor auction for many years and this is the second year under our advisor, Ms. Chelsea Whittle. We are excited to continue this activity, because is not just beneficial to us, but the community as well.

This year’s event will include a free meal for everybody in attendance. The meal will consist of pork chops, baked potatoes, green beans, and a roll.

This event gives members of the FFA chapter the opportunity to donate eight hours of their time to members of the community and in return raise money for scholarships to be given to graduating FFA members who will be entering post-secondary education after high school.

All you have to do is bid on your favorite FFA member and let them come and help you get the work done around your farm, ranch, house, shop, business, or whatever it may be! We will have 32 members, one FFA Advisor and a special guest for sale that evening! Members will be sold either as individuals or as pairs depending on what they feel comfortable with.

Plan on attending the annual labor auction and help raise money for students who will be graduating in May. If you have any questions contact the Ellis FFA adviser, Chelsea Whittle, at the high school at (785) 726-3151.
