FHSU’s Davis named All-District First Team by the NABC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State senior guard Rob Davis collected his second regional honor on Monday. Davis was selected to the Central Regional NABC All-District First Team. The honor is selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC in NCAA Division II.

The first team all-district selection comes on the heels of being selected to the D2CCA All-Central Region Second Team. Davis is the first all-district selection by the NABC for FHSU since the 2013-14 season when Craig Nicholson earned first team honors as well. Dominique Jones and Dwayne Brunson are the other two former Tigers to earn this distinction.

Davis had a tremendous year for the Tigers, averaging 21.4 points per game. He became the first FHSU player to average at least 20 points per game since the 1995-96 season, when Alonzo Goldston averaged 20.4 helping lead the Tigers to an undefeated national championship. He is the first player under head coach Mark Johnson to average at least 20 per game. Davis finished the year scoring 30 or more points in a game eight times and 20 or more 17 times. He scored 1,140 points over two years with Fort Hays State, finishing 15th on the all-time scoring list.

Davis scored a career-high 42 points at Emporia State on February 1, 2017, matching the sixth-highest scoring game in Tiger history. Dennis Edwards owns the top five single-game scoring performances in Tiger history and was the last to break the 40-point barrier before Davis, doing it three times in 1995.

Davis finished the year shooting 49.9 percent from the field, making 207-of-415 attempts from the field. He shot 45.3 percent beyond the 3-point line (82-of-181) and 85.1 percent at the free-throw line (126-of-148). He added 3.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.

For his career, Davis ranks fourth all-time in Tiger history for 3-point field goal percentage and free-throw percentage. He was very consistent in his rate of shooting from the field, hitting exactly at a .499 clip overall and .453 clip beyond the 3-point line both seasons at FHSU. His performance at the free-throw line this year improved as his career percentage settled at 82.2 percent.

Sundquist- photo Johnson County

KANSAS CITY – A Kansas man pleaded guilty Monday to robbing a bank in Overland Park, according to U.S. Attorney Tom Beall.

Paul A Sundquist, 29, Louisburg, pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery. In his plea, he admitted that on Sept. 19, 2016, he robbed the Stanley Bank, 7835 W.151st in Overland Park, Kan.

Sundquist showed a clerk a note demanding money before receiving the cash and fleeing the bank. A bystander got a partial tag number on Sundquist’s pickup truck. Sundquist was monitoring police radio traffic on his cell phone. When he heard police had his tag number he called 911 and surrendered.

Sentencing will be set for a later date. He faces up to 20 years and a fine up to $250,000.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The U.S. attorney’s office says a Kansas man has been sentenced to 47 months in prison for sex trafficking a 17-year-old girl.

Thirty-year-old Reginald Eugene Newman of Topeka had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit sex trafficking.

In his plea deal, he admitted he and his wife, Tiara Jade Newman, took the girl in March 2015 from Topeka to Junction City, Kansas, for prostitution. A few days later, his wife took her to Manhattan where she told a customer the victim was new and she was showing her the business.

Prosecutors say the Newmans kept all the money from the commercial sex acts.

Tiara Newman was sentenced earlier this month to 34 months in prison.

Ball named MIAA Freshman of the Year; Thompson MIAA Coach of the Year

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its postseason awards for wrestling on Monday. Brandon Ball earned MIAA Freshman of the Year and Chas Thompson earned MIAA Coach of the Year honors.

Thompson earns his first Coach of the Year honor in the MIAA after guiding the Tigers to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. It matched the best performance at nationals for the program under Thompson’s guidance as his 2010 national qualifiers generated the same result in the standings. It was the best performance at the championships for the program since the MIAA added wrestling a championship sport in 2012-13.

Along with the great finish at nationals, coaches took notice of Fort Hays State’s impressive youth movement this season with three freshmen qualifying for the national championships. That group included Ball, Greg Tooley, and Christian Lance. But the rock in the middle of it all providing leadership to the young Tigers was senior Jon Inman, who closed out his storied career with the top win percentage in program history. Inman finished his collegiate career at 141-28 and had an impressive 28-4 record this year to finish as the national runner-up at 197 pounds. Inman became the third two-time All-America performer at FHSU under Thompson’s guidance.

By the end of the MIAA Tournament in February, eight of the 10 weight classes saw freshmen experience varsity time in the Tiger lineup. Thompson looks to have the program in position for a bright future with all the freshmen that contributed this season.

Ball was one of Fort Hays State’s three standout freshmen. He grabs the MIAA Freshman of the Year distinction with his tremendous performances at the NCAA Super Regional and NCAA Championship. Ball finished the year at 38-8 overall after taking a redshirt last season, winning the Super Regional at 141 pounds and placing sixth at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America status. Ball is the first Tiger to earn MIAA Freshman of the Year honors since Inman earned the distinction in 2013-14.

Ball had the best win percentage (.826) of Fort Hays State’s three freshmen that qualified for nationals. Tooley finished 27-6 (.818) in the 157-pound weight class and Lance finished 44-10 (.815) in the 285-pound weight class. Tooley was the MIAA Tournament Champion this year at 157 pounds.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A renewable energy company is again facing opposition as it seeks one of the final pieces of regulatory approval needed to carry wind power from the nation’s heartland to the east.

Missouri utility regulators began hearing testimony Monday on a request from Clean Line Energy to build a high-voltage transmission line from western Kansas across Missouri and Illinois to an Indiana power grid that connects with eastern states.

The Houston-based company already has won approval from other states, but the Missouri Public Service Commission rejected it in 2015.

Clean Line Energy is trying again — this time by showing it has Missouri municipal power companies lined up as customers.

Several landowner and farmer groups are questioning the true need for the project and the discounted rates provided to those cities.

Police: Kansas man chases burglary suspects from his home

SALINE COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities in Saline County are investigating an attempted burglary.

Just after 1:30 a.m. on Monday, a man and his wife told police they noticed lights turn on outside of their home, in the 2500 block of Aberdeen Lane in Salina, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

Two suspects then entered the home and began going upstairs.

The husband then attempted to chase down the suspects; one climbed out of a garage window and the other jumped off of the second story balcony.

Law enforcement arrived but could not locate the suspects. They believe one of them was armed with a handgun, according to Forrester.
The intruders did not take anything but some items were broken during the husband’s brief pursuit. The couple’s 20-year-old daughter was also home during the break-in.

Sign up for a spring boating education course

boating-education-2017-kdwptKDWPT

PRATT – Before the boating season begins, you check your boat for gas, stock your cooler with ice, and chuck sunscreen in your “things to take,” bag, but have you crossed off Boating Education from your “things to do” list? Don’t wait until the weather is nice and plans with friends are made before you take a boating education course. “Spring Aboard” a class now, so you can get straight to the good times this summer.

To encourage boaters to sign up for boating education courses before the season begins, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), U.S. Coast Guard, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) and others are promoting the Spring Aboard – Take a Boating Education Course campaign March 19-25, 2017.

“If we can increase the knowledge of the average boater, we can make our waterways significantly safer for recreational boaters,” said Stephanie Weatherington, NASBLA President. “The majority of recreational boaters are not on the water frequently enough, or for the length of time needed, to become an expert at operating a vessel. This is where boating education plays an important role.”

During the weeklong campaign, many course providers will be offering discounts and other incentives for those who enroll or complete a boating education course. In Kansas, a boater education course is required for anyone born on or after January 1, 1989, and under the age of 21, wanting to operate a motorboat or sailboat without adult supervision.

Boaters can take a traditional classroom course offered by KDWPT (visit ksoutdoors.com/Boating/Boating-Education) or an approved online course. The following online course providers offer boating education courses accepted in the state of Kansas: BOATsmart!, offering discounts on their boating education courses at www.boatsmartexam.com/us; BOATERexam.com, offering 50 percent off courses March 19-25; and Boat-Ed.com, also offering a 50 percent discount.

Courses are also offered through the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Sailing, U.S. Power Squadrons, BoatUS Foundation, and numerous private and online course providers. For more information on boating safety, contact Chelsea Hawk, KDWPT boating education coordinator, at [email protected] or (620) 672-0770.

Kansas domestic terror suspect wants new attorneys

Stein-photo Sedgwick Co.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The court-appointed attorneys for a Kansas man accused of plotting to bomb to an apartment complex filled with Somali immigrants have asked a court to let them withdraw from the case.

The filing Monday by attorneys for Patrick Stein comes in the wake of an arraignment last week on a superseding indictment. Stein told the magistrate judge he was unwilling to be represented by attorneys Edward Robinson and Kristen Wheeler.

Stein told the court they were providing “ineffective assistance of counsel,” and he wanted to hire his own attorney.

Monday’s written filing exposes rifts between Stein and his attorneys over how to defend the case.

Stein wants to challenge the validity of a search warrant for his home and insists on bringing the case to trial as soon as possible.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Three-year-old twins are dead after apparently wandering into a pond just north of Kansas City.
