DeShields RBI single in 13th gives Texas win over Royals

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Delino DeShields had an RBI single with one out in the 13th inning to score Joey Gallo from second base and the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 1-0 on Thursday night.

Gallo had pulled a one-out double into the right-field corner off Travis Wood (0-1), the third Royals reliever after starter Danny Duffy went 7 1-3 innings. Gallo scored when DeShields hit a sharp single to left on the 10th pitch of the at-bat.

It was only the third game in the 24 seasons of the Rangers’ ballpark to go to extra innings scoreless. This was the longest of those games.

Gallo’s double was the first hit for the Rangers since Jonathan Lucroy’s leadoff double in the fifth. It was the first hit in the game since Royals leadoff hitter Alex Gordon’s one-out single in the eighth.

Broncos’ Elway hoping to buck trend with pick of Walker

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — With the 51st pick of the NFL draft, No. 7 was looking for a change of fortune in his seventh season as architect of the Denver Broncos.

General manager John Elway has grabbed some first-round steals and some late-round gems.

It’s Round 2 that’s been his bugaboo.

After starting his tenure with solid second-round picks in Rahim Moore, Orlando Franklin, Derek Wolfe and Brock Osweiler, Elway’s last four second-round picks proved more head-scratcher than headliner.

Adam Gotsis, Ty Sambrailo, Cody Latimer and Montee Ball have 11 combined NFL starts and Ball is out of the league entirely.

Elway chose Florida State defensive end DeMarcus Walker in the second round Friday night.

Walker was a consensus All-American and the ACC’s defensive player of the year after piling up 16 sacks and 21 1-2 tackles for loss during a sensational senior season that began with 4 1-2 sacks in the second half of the Seminoles’ opener against Ole Miss.

Walker’s selection came 24 hours after Elway bypassed some highly regarded defensive players to finally plug a persistent, gaping hole at left tackle with Utah’s Garett Bolles .

The Broncos used their third-round selections on Louisiana Tech wide receiver/kick returner Carlos Henderson and Lamar cornerback Brendan Langley, who’s also a return specialist.

Kansas City’s first primetime contest at Arrowhead will be on Oct. 2, when the club faces Washington on ESPN’s Monday Night Football. The following week, the Chiefs travel to Houston (Oct. 8) to take on the Texans on NBC’s Sunday Night Football. “Being selected to play in the season-opening game and having a league-high six primetime contests is a tremendous honor and a tribute to our team and organization,” Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid said. “We’ve already started preparation for these teams and we know we have a lot of great challenges ahead of us. We are looking forward to getting in front of Chiefs Kingdom and building off the success we had last season.”

The Chiefs first home game of the 2017 season comes against Philadelphia on Sept. 17. It will be Reid’s second matchup against his former team, the last was a 26-16 victory over the Eagles on Sept. 19, 2013. On Sept. 24, KC travels to Los Angeles to face the Chargers. The Chiefs have won six consecutive contests against the Chargers. On Oct. 15 the Chiefs will welcome the Pittsburgh Steelers into Arrowhead Stadium, a rematch of last year’s AFC Divisional Playoff Game. The club travels to Dallas on Nov. 5. Reid is 18-11 all-time against the Cowboys.

After the Bye Week on Nov. 12, the Chiefs travel to New York to face the Giants on Nov. 19, followed by a home game against Buffalo on Nov. 26. Prior to last season, the Chiefs and Bills had faced off in eight-straight seasons. The Chiefs travel back to New York on Dec. 3 to face the Jets before returning home for three consecutive December contests at Arrowhead Stadium against the Raiders (Dec. 10), Chargers (Dec. 16) and Dolphins (Dec. 24). Kansas City will close out the regular season against the Broncos in Denver on Dec. 31. The Chiefs have won 11 consecutive AFC West Division contests and are coming off their first AFC West Division Title since 2010. Home games in bold; all kickoffs are Central Time.
*Subject to Flexible Scheduling

Flexible scheduling will be used in Weeks 10-15 and 17. Additionally, in Weeks 5-9, flexible scheduling may be used in no more than two weeks. In Weeks 5-15, the schedule lists the games tentatively set for Sunday Night Football on NBC. Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the tentatively scheduled Sunday night game would be moved to an afternoon start time. Flexible scheduling will not be applied to games airing on Thursday, Saturday or Monday nights. A flexible scheduling move would be announced at least 12 days before the game. For Week 17, the Sunday night game will be announced no later than six days prior to December 31. The NFL schedule does not list a Sunday night game in Week 17, but an afternoon game with playoff implications will be moved to that time slot. Flexible scheduling ensures quality matchups in all Sunday time slots in those weeks and gives “surprise” teams a chance to play their way into primetime.

Kan. police chief faces backlash after killing man’s service dog

Midnite- courtesy Alan Fitzgerald

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The police chief of an eastern Wichita town says he’s received death threats over an officer’s fatal shooting of a service dog.

A vigil for the dog, Midnite, was scheduled for Wednesday. The vigil was described by event organizers as a “protest” in response to an officer’s killing of Midnite April 13.

Augusta Police Chief Tyler Brewer says people made death threats to him and his family last week. He says the officer who shot the dog has also received death threats.

Police say the officer and an animal control officer went to Alan Fitzgerald’s house investigating a report of his dog attacking a neighbor’s dog. When Midnite charged at the animal control officer, the police officer shot the dog.

Fitzgerald disputes that recounting and wanted the vigil to be “a peaceful event.”

Lady Indian soccer gets revenge in Liberal

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

Hays High 2, Liberal 1

LIBERAL, Kan.-After losing a tough 1-0 home decision to the Liberal Lady Redskins two weeks ago the Hays High Lady Indian Soccer team had revenge on their minds Thursday afternoon at Redskin Field.  It didn’t take long to answer as Hannah McGuire streaked down the right side of the field and found Sophie Humphrey in the middle who knocked the ball in the goal.  That gave the Lady Indians the 1-0 lead in the third minute.

That would remain the score until the 60th minute when Liberal would tie the game at one goal each.  Hays High recovered and seven minutes later used their senior connection when Maddie Keller found Sydney Sulzman in the box and she scored what would prove to be the game winner with just over 12 minutes to go.

Hays High improves to 6-3 on the season and 2-2 in the Western Athletic Conference.  The Lady Indians will re-match with Maize South on Saturday in Hays.  The Mavericks beat Hays High 3-0 in the opening round of the McPherson Invitational Tournament on March 28th.

Kan. woman gets prison time, must pay back $480K for health care fraud

Hansel used social media to promote her business

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Topeka woman has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison for committing health care fraud while operating a business that was licensed to provide day and residential services to developmentally disabled adults.

The U.S. attorney’s office says in a news release that 45-year-old Kristina Hansel also was ordered Wednesday to pay more than $480,000 in restitution.

The release says she billed Medicaid for services that weren’t provided and made false statements to obtain and renew her license. Prosecutors say she also admitted withholding medical treatment from a patient in one case and directing others to help her cover up medication overdoses so licensing authorities wouldn’t learn of the problem.

Prosecutors say the crimes occurred while she owned Achieve Services.
