Hays baseball splits with Dodge City

Like most teams around the state of Kansas, Hays and Dodge City’s baseball seasons have been changed because of the weather.  Friday night the moisture held off but the cold weather did not.  Hays and Dodge City split their double header as they squeezed in the games before the rain in the weekend’s forecast.

Game 1

Hays 4 – Dodge City 3 (9 innings)

Hays helped Dodge City to a two run lead thanks to errors through the first five innings.  Hays battled back in the bottom of the sixth inning which was led off by Jace Armstrong’s first career home run.  Hays tied the game at two runs a piece when Palmer Hutchinson blooped single into the outfield.

Each team scored a single run in the seventh inning to force extra baseball.  Hays had the winning run on the third base in the each the seventh and eighth inning before breaking through in the ninth.  The Indian’s Cody Peterson reached first on an error then moved to third on a errant pick-off throw from the pitcher.  The Red Demons elected to load the bases with two intentional walks, bringing Trey Riggs to the plate.  Riggs raked a hard single off the third baseman’s glove who was playing in on the infield.

Game 1 Highlights

Palmer Hutchison took the win in the 4-3 opener.  Hutchison pitched two innings of relief after being cleared to play medically the day before.  Tyrone Wynn pitched the first seven innings allowing three runs, one of which was earned.  Dodge City’s starting pitcher went six and a third innings before leaving due to the state mandated 105 maximum pitch count rule.

Game 2

Dodge City 12 – Hays 4

Dodge City jumped out to a 6-0 run on their way to a 12-4 win in game two.  Dodge City sent all nine of their players to the play in the fourth inning scoring three runs.  Hays answered with four runs of their own while sending nine to plate.  The bottom of the fourth inning cut the Indian lead down to 6-4.  Hays though would not have any more players cross the plate.

Game 2 Highlights

The Indians used four pitchers in the game, walking twelve Red Demons and hitting two more.  The Indians allowed ten hits in the loss.  The Indian offense notched just one hit.

Coach Frank Leo

Hays moves to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in the Western Athletic Conference.  Dodge City is now 7-4 and 2-3 in the WAC.  Hays is off until the Diamond Classic on May 4th, 5th and 6th.  Goddard-Eisenhower, Salina Central, Life Prep Academy and Great Bend will all take part in the tournament.

Bob Page- photo Univ. of Kansas Health System

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The University of Kansas Health System is interested in acquiring a financially troubled nonprofit hospital in Topeka.

System President and CEO Bob Page told Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback in a letter Thursday that it would submit a proposal for the 378-bed St. Francis Health hospital in Topeka.

Page said the University of Kansas system would partner with Nashville-based Ardent Health Services. It operates hospitals in six states.

St. Francis is owned by Denver-based SCL Health. It plans to stop operating St. Francis this summer whether it has a buyer or not.

The University of Kansas system operates the private hospital spun off from the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1998.

The California-based Prime Healthcare Foundation and the rival Topeka-area Stormont Vail Health system also have expressed an interest.

Kan. day care worker under house arrest, accused of killing infant

Buchhorn-photo Douglas County

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — An arrest affidavit shows that a Kansas day care worker was the only person with access to the infant she’s accused of killing.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports 42-year-old Carrody Buchhorn was arrested April 14 and faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of 9-month-old Oliver Ortiz.

Buchhorn has pleaded not guilty. She released from the Douglas County Jail on Friday after posting $100,000 bond.

Investigators allege the boy was laid down for a nap at Sunshine Kids Group Daycare Home when he died in September after experiencing blunt force trauma. Buchhorn alleges she found Oliver that way after checking on him.

Buchhorn is currently under house arrest. She is scheduled to next appear in court on May 17.

Kansas man with backward murder tattoo loses appeal

Chapman-photo Kan. Dept. of Corrections

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Supreme Court has upheld the murder conviction of a Kansas man whose case drew attention because of a tattoo spelling murder backward on his neck.

The court on Friday rejected an appeal from Jeffery Wade Chapman of his first-degree murder conviction in the 2011 death of Damon Galyardt in Barton County.

Chapman claimed that he killed Galyardt in self-defense.

In his appeal, Chapman argued he did not get a fair trial because of pretrial publicity, caused in part because of the “REDRUM” tattoo on his neck. He asked to have the tattoo removed but was allowed instead to wear a turtleneck to cover it during trial.

The court rejected the appeal, saying the district court made a special effort to avoid jurors affected by the publicity.
