Feds determine cause of Kan. chemical spill that sent 140 to hospital

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Federal investigators say mistakes by a delivery driver and an employee of a northeast Kansas distilling plant led to the mixing of incompatible chemicals, causing a noxious cloud to spread over Atchison last year.
The U.S. Chemical Safety Board said in a preliminary report issued Wednesday that design and labeling deficiencies at the loading station at MGP Ingredients also contributed to the toxic chemical release of a huge cloud of chlorine gas in October 2016.
The release sent about 140 people to hospitals and caused residents in the area to stay indoors or evacuate for several hours.
The agency said the release occurred when a delivery driver mistakenly unloaded sulfuric acid into a tank that contained sodium hypochlorite, releasing thousands of gallons of the gas across the region.
Large Kansas crowd participates in Big Brother casting call
MANHATTAN – A large crowd showed up at Tuesday’s casting call for the popular CBS reality show Big Brother at Kite’s Bar & Grill in Manhattan.

“The restaurant started to get busy by noon and some contestants actually arrived Monday night,” according to Kite’s Marketing Manager Josie Murray,
“One drove from Denver and another from Connecticut, but we were ready. There’s only 16 casting locations in the country and we’re one of them,” she said.
Contestants who wanted to apply were asked to enter the dance floor side of Kite’s for registration, fill out application for a number, and then wait to be called for audition. Those auditions were held on the back patio.
“Apparently, the Manhattan area has done really well casting for reality shows,” she said. “There’s something about the area that they really like about casting from here. We’re just excited because this event is bringing people from all over the state and different states to Manhattan.
So, we’re proud to show them what this wonderful town has to offer.”
Another casting call will be held in Pittsburg on Saturday, April 22nd from 2PM-5PM at Pittsburg State University Plaster Center.

After delays, demolition work set to continue at former Ambassador in Hays
By JONATHAN ZWEYGARDT
Hays Post
Crews are scheduled to resume demolition of the former Ambassador and Conference Center, 3603 Vine, this week.
Carl Britz, co-owner of American Wrecking Services, Kansas City, Mo., said crews were shut down for the second time earlier this year because they found asbestos. He said they are scheduled to begin work again Wednesday.
As a demolition contractor, Britz said he works closely with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Whenever his crews come across environmental concerns, they stop demolition.
“I don’t care what the job looks like. Where it’s at, I’ll stop.” Britz said. “I will generally pull equipment off until environment issues are cleaned up and taken care of and that’s exactly what we did there.”
Britz said the hazardous material was found in sheet rock in a few rooms crews were stripping before demolition. He said it was not a result of something they did and that it was “nothing major.”
Britz said crews come across asbestos during almost every job and an environmental company was brought in to clean up the hazardous material, approximately 10 trash bags full. They had the company complete a sweep of the building to make sure there is no asbestos left in the building and do not expect any more issues with asbestos.
People can expect to see crews working in that area again this week, according to Britz, and he said people will see, “more demo, more cleanup and more of a mess.
“It gets worse before it gets better,” he added.
When they began working, they had a timeline of five weeks, but the two delays pushed that timeline back. Britz said he now wants to be done with the demolition and cleanup by the middle of May.

Leon F. Fabrizius
Leon F. Fabrizius passed away on Monday, April 10, 2017 in his home south of Ogallah, Kansas at the age of 82. He was born on August 28, 1934 in WaKeeney, Kansas to the late Solomon and Pauline (Deines) Fabrizius. He grew up in Trego County, Kansas and graduated from Trego Community High School with the Class of 1952. He served in the United States Army from 1954-1956, and on October 19, 1957 he was united in marriage to Virginia “Ginger” Nelson at Zion Lutheran Church in Trego Center.
Leon was a man of many talents, hobbies, and interests. The quintessential collector of everything, he had a special affinity for bullet pencils, miniature tractors or cars, and anything else that might tickle his fancy. He enjoyed farming, working on antique tractors, and harvesting wheat; but the job he loved the most was being an auctioneer, some of his most well-known venues being livestock sales and of course many years with Stithem and Fabrizius Auction Service and Real Estate Brokers.
Never knowing a stranger, Leon was always a creative jokester and storyteller, or as some might say, “He was an over enthusiastic promoter of facts and a colorful hyperbolist!” He sold the shoe at many a wedding, helped with the FFA and 4-H clubs, and was always willing to step up and help friends and neighbors in need. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church of Ogallah, a past member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles of WaKeeney, and as only Leon could do, was both a Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos fan.
Leon is survived by his wife Ginger Fabrizius of the home near Ogallah; sons Kevin Fabrizius with Donna Brown of Kerrville, TX, Mark Fabrizius and wife Kathleen of Ogallah, and Danny Fabrizius of Memphis, TN; daughter Kelli Morrill and husband James of Pleasant Hill, MO; brother Melvin Fabrizius and wife Marian of WaKeeney; sister Florence Flinn and husband Wesley of Manhattan; grandchildren Erik Fabrizius with Ellen McNerney, Savannah Butler and husband Gordon, Sierra Fabrizius with Cory Lampe, Jackson Morrill, Nelson Fabrizius, Easton Morrill, and Drew Fabrizius; and great-grandchildren Eli, Nora, and Ella Butler.
He was preceded in death his parents Solomon and Pauline Fabrizius, brother LeRoy Fabrizius, daughter Paula Fabrizius, and infant son Scott Fabrizius.
It is said that the bidding of the Lord cannot be ignored; and so it is, that Leon has been given the final nod of the Master Auctioneer. As the angel voices sound, “Going…Going…Gone!” the hammer has fallen only on this side of heaven. Although we are sad because he has left us for a while, we look forward to the time when we too shall hear the final bid caller, and be reunited in that blessed ring, eternal in the heavens.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00am on Friday, April 14, 2017 at the United Methodist Church in WaKeeney. Burial will follow in Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery south of Ogallah. Visitation will be from 4:30-7:00pm on Thursday at the church, and from 9:00am until service time on Friday. Memorials are suggested to Emanuel Lutheran Church, the Ashland Wildfire Relief Fund, or the Trego County Fair and may be sent in care of Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, 723 N 1st Street, Stockton, KS 67669.
