Student Honors exhibition showcases talent, offers scholarships

An exhibit of work by student artists at Fort Hays State University will open with a public reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 7, in the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art in the university’s Rarick Hall, room 102.
The Student Honors Exhibition will remain on display through April 20. The artworks come from every area of the department’s offerings: painting, prints, sculpture, photography, graphic design, ceramics and more.
Three of the student artists will win $1,000 Fields Scholarships and each of 20 other student exhibitors will win $200 Art and Design Scholarships, funded by the department’s annual art sale. Winners will be announced at the opening reception.
Admission to the Moss-Thorns is free. The gallery is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Ellis Co. law enforcement ready for drug take-back day
The Ellis County Drug Enforcement Unit will again be sponsoring two collection sites for community members to anonymously drop off their unused or unwanted prescription and OTC drugs on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The sites will be located in the parking lots at the Hays Visitors Center, 27th & Vine Street, and the Good Samaritan Center, 27th and Canal.
All tablets, capsules, caplets and patches are accepted. Liquids will be accepted if in spill-proof containers. No needles or aerosols can be collected.
“Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem in our communities and this is the perfect opportunity for people to help reduce the threat,” the unit said in a news release.
In the previous 10 Take-Back events, local sheriffs deputies and police officers have taken in over 1,000 pounds of unwanted drugs.
“Please clean out you medicine cabinets, closets, bedside tables and vehicles and make your home and cars safe from drug theft, accidental consumption, and abuse,” the unit urged.
Hays Public Library celebrates National Library Week by forgiving fines
The Hays Public Library will be celebrating National Library Week April 9-15, along with hundreds of other libraries around the country.
During the week of April 9-15, the library will offer fine forgiveness on lost or overdue items that are returned. Fines will only be forgiven if the items are physically returned to the library. Patrons will also have the chance to win a new DVD by submitting paper copies of their checkout receipts to a library-wide raffle. All departments will participate in both fine forgiveness and the DVD raffle.
“Libraries Transform” is the theme of National Library Week 2017.
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries – school, public, academic and special – participate.

Construction underway on Kansas 25 in Logan County

The Kansas Department of Transportation has started work on a resurfacing project on portion of Kansas 25 in Logan County beginning at the north city limits of Russell Springs and extending 11 miles west.
Project work includes a 1-inch mill followed by application of a 2-inch overlay of new asphalt material to improve roadway conditions and extend pavement life. Traffic in the construction zone will be reduced to one lane and controlled by flaggers and a pilot car operation during daylight hours. Minor delays, not exceeding 15 minutes, should be expected. KDOT urges all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs and “Give ‘em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through work zones. Work is expected to be completed by the beginning of May, weather permitting.
APAC Shears of Hutchinson is the primary contractor on the project with a total contract cost of approximately $1.2 million. The project is funded by T-WORKS. Find out more about this and other T-WORKS projects at https://tworks.ksdot.org.
Let’s Talk series presents ‘Hip or Ankle Pain Slowing You Down?’
The Hays Orthopedic Institute will sponsor Let’s Talk on Monday, April 10, at the HaysMed Center for Health Improvement (CHI) Education Room, 2500 Canterbury Drive, Hays Kansas. Participants are asked to use Entrance F – South Entrance to CHI.
The program will feature a presentation followed by a question and answer discussion with Dr. Gulraiz Cheema, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon and Jared Reed, Physician Assistant, both from the Hays Orthopedic Institute. Topic for the discussion is “Hip or Ankle Pain Slowing You Down?”
The program begins at 6:00 pm with registration and healthy snacks followed by the presentation and discussion from 6:15 pm – 7:15 pm. The program is designed for those who have orthopedic needs and the people who care about them.

The family of Tristan Wilson, Dighton freshman majoring in English education, was named the 2017 Fort Hays State University Family of the Year by the Office of Transition and Student Conduct.
The Wilsons were selected for their dedication to Tristan’s education and the FHSU community.
“They are devoted to me and my well-being,” said Wilson. “Their passion for my education and achievements makes them stand out. They are my rock and my biggest supporters.”
Champion cyclist from Kansas struck by semi, dies

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A highway crash involving two semitrailers and a van near the Utah-Colorado border has killed two people, including champion cyclist Stephen Tilford.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce says the first semitrailer drifted off Interstate 70 Wednesday and then overcorrected before rolling onto its side and blocking all eastbound lanes. A Mercedes-Benz van struck the semitrailer and 57-year-old Tilford of Topeka exited the van. He had been standing next to the vehicle when he was hit and killed by a second semitrailer.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports the driver of the second semitrailer, 70-year-old Stanley Williams of Grand Junction, Colorado, also died in the crash.
Tilford won a U.S. National Mountain Bike championship, four National Cyclocross titles and several other championships throughout his career.

Human remains identified as missing Kansas City area woman

BELTON, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say they have identified one set of human remains found in rural western Missouri as those of a 21-year-old woman who disappeared in September.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says a medical examiner identified the remains as Jessica Runions, of Raymore, Missouri, who was last seen on Sept. 8 leaving a gathering in south Kansas City.
Her burned vehicle was found two days later. Runions left the gathering with 27-year-old Kylr Yust, who was later charged with burning Runions’ vehicle. A judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.
The remains of a second person found in the same area have not been identified.
A mushroom hunter found the remains Monday in an area south of Belton and a second skull was found nearby Tuesday.
Driver dies attempting U-turn in NW Kansas crash
THOMAS COUNTY – A man died in an accident at 3p.m. on Wednesday in Thomas County.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Subaru XV Crosstrek driven by Norman L. Hale, 52, Omaha, NE., was northbound on U.S. 83 two miles south of U.S. 24.
A semi hit the Subaru as Hale was attempting to make a U-turn.
Hale was transported to the hospital in Colby.
The semi driver Lucas T. Ruth, 28, Healey, was not injured.
Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.
Kansas man arrested for aggravated armed robbery

DOUGLAS COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities in Douglas County are investigating a suspect in connection with an armed robbery.
Police arrested the suspect in a robbery that occurred Monday night near the area of West 6th Street and Florida Street in Lawrence, according to a media release.
According to police, Core stole cash from a 44-year-old man who was injured and had to be hospitalized.
The suspect, 25 year old Curtis J. Core was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon without incident. Core was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of Aggravated Robbery and Aggravated Battery.
Core has previous aggravated burglary and theft conviction in Sedgwick County.
