Stuart Lee Henzel was born December 16, 1934, in Riverside, California, the son of Richard and Elizabeth (Jenkins) Henzel. He passed away May 23, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Society in Oberlin, Kansas, at the age of 82.
Stuart, a long-time resident of Klamath County, Oregon, was raised in Malin, Oregon, along with his sister Jane. He attended grade school and high school in Malin. During school, he enjoyed working on the ranch, in the machine shop, operating amateur radios, and learning to fly and earning his pilot’s license. After graduating, Stuart attended Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in General Agriculture.
On June 24, 1956, Stuart married Mary Lucille Dillard in Klamath Falls. Four sons were born to their union. Stuart enjoyed taking trips with his family, by car, train and in his private plane.
Stuart and Mary owned and operated cattle ranches while residing in Midland, Oregon, and later in Holdenville, Oklahoma, where they moved in 1981. One of Stuart’s passions was the study of minor elements and animal nutrition. Working in conjunction with Oregon State University, he was instrumental in determining trace mineral deficiencies local to the Klamath Basin. Steps were taken to dramatically increase gains on pasture. He brought this success to all his cattle operations. Stuart loved working with cattle and was a longtime member of the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association, for which he was a past State President. In 1998, the couple moved to a farm six miles east and six miles south of Oberlin where they raised cattle and enjoyed their horses and dogs. Stuart was a current member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Oberlin and past member of Rotary International.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; three sons, Jim Henzel (Connie), of Pahrump, NV, Barron Henzel (Tom Fitzpatrick), of San Diego, CA, and Richard Henzel (Pamela Newby), of St. Petersburg, FL; sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Wayne Buck, of Corvallis, OR; grandson, Jacob Henzel (Ali), of Sapulpa, OK; in addition to other family members and friends.
Stuart was preceded in death by a son, Clint Henzel, and his parents, Richard and Elizabeth Henzel.
At Stuart’s request, his body has been donated to the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City, Kansas, for the advancement of science. A celebration of life service will be planned for a later date. Donations can be made to the Good Samaritan Society, in care of the funeral home.

The Hays bison herd will have a special guest arriving next week – and visitors won’t have any trouble picking her out from the crowd.
Ginther Farms, located in Rexford, Kansas, will be delivering a female white bison to live with the Hays herd at Frontier Park. The bison is expected to be delivered at 10 a.m. on June 1, weather permitting.
The white bison is on loan to the City of Hays at least through the summer.
“The unique and rare white bison from Ginther Farms will be a great addition to our herd this year,” said Jeff Boyle, director of the Hays Parks Department. “Visitors from across the nation stop at Hays to see the bison herd. The bison are an attraction that the Hays community is very proud of.”
The Frontier Park bison herd began in 1952 with a bull named “Wild Bill” and a cow named “Calamity Jane.” The herd lives on approximately 9.5 acres of land and has been maintained by the Parks Department since 1977. The bison eat native grass in the pen area during much of the growing season, but are supplemented with brome grass and alfalfa throughout much of the year as well. In addition, the animals receive protein blocks and protein cubes throughout most of the year.
The current Hays herd consists of one bull and four cows. Bison calves from the herd are sold each year to the highest bidder, with revenue from the sale of the calves going into the city’s general fund.
A common mistake most people make is referring to the animals as “buffalo,” a term early settlers used due to the similarity of the bison found in North America to the Cape buffalo of Africa or the water buffalo of South Asia.
Frontier Park is located on US-183 Alternate, four miles south of I-70 and directly across from Historic Fort Hays. For more information about the bison herd, contact the Hays Parks Department at (785) 628-7375.

TOPEKA — A 2017 Fort Hays State University graduate is the first recipient of the Kansas Insurance Certificate, a new program sponsored by the Kansas Insurance Education Foundation (KIEF), the Kansas Board of Regents and the Kansas Insurance Department.
Jordan Klima, a Hoisington (KS) High School graduate, earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance on May 13 when he graduated from FHSU. He also received certificates in accounting and the new Insurance Certificate.
The Kansas Insurance Certificate program began in 2016 through a collaboration among KIEF, the insurance department, and several Kansas higher learning institutions. The certificate gives college students the opportunity to gain a broad understanding about insurance and show prospective employers knowledge of general insurance coursework.
The 12-hour certificate program, if completed, is designed to advance career opportunities for the student in the financial services industry, including insurance. Students can take classes through several institutions.
Klima said he was working on the certificate’s coursework prior to qualifying for the certificate.
“I was informed by my Risk Management professor through email,” Klima said. “She said that it was a new certificate that Fort Hays was offering, and after some further research, I found that I had/would take all of the classes by the time that I was finished with my degree.”
Ken Selzer, CPA, Kansas Commissioner of Insurance, said the program allows the participating schools to offer the focus-area courses online or through traditional classroom instruction. Students can take the courses they are most interested in, even if they originate at another school within the program.
Klima is now employed as a Financial Institution Specialist at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). He examines state-chartered financial institutions to ensure they have adequate risk policies and procedures in place. He believes his insurance certificate classes will be useful as he rotates through the FDIC’s Division of Insurance and Research next year.
He began as an intern with the FDIC prior to graduation. The insurance certificate program suggests that students take an internship with a financial services company to give them the opportunity to acquire new connections with businesses and relevant experience.
When asked about recommending the certificate to his peers he said, “Of course, especially to my friends still within the finance degree program because it would not likely increase the number of credit hours they are already required to complete. I feel non-finance students should also consider working towards this certificate.”
Participating institutions offering courses for the certificate are Washburn University, Fort Hays State University, Johnson County Community College, the University of Kansas-Edwards Campus, Emporia State University, Pittsburg State University and Kansas State University.
More about the program is available at www.ksinsurancecertificate.org.

At 9:23 PM, Thursday, City of Hays emergency dispatchers were alerted to a building fire at 418 E. Fifth. The Hays Fire Department, assisted by Ellis County Fire Department Company 5, the Hays Police Department and Ellis County EMS, was immediately dispatched.
First arriving police officers found fire coming from the attic of a single family dwelling. Firefighters used two hose lines to control the fire.
Damage was limited to the attic. There were no injuries. The most probable cause of the fire was a lightning strike during a severe thunderstorm. Because the occupant promptly called 911 firefighters were able to get the fire under control quickly.
During this fire, firefighters also responded to two coincident emergency calls, both involving trampolines blown into and entangled in power lines by the severe thunderstorm winds.
Nineteen firefighters staffing four fire trucks responded to the building fire. Fire crews left the scene at 10:36 PM.
