Voters in another Kansas school district pass bond issue
BUTLER COUNTY – Voters in another Kansas school district approved a pair of bond issues on Tuesday worth over $188 million.
One bond for USD 385 in Andover will use money to build two schools and provide storm shelters to schools, according to the district web site.
The money for the other bond will provide funds to build a swimming pool, add artificial turf for athletic fields and more.

In April, voters in USD 265 Goddard approved a $52-million-dollar bond for security enhancements and storm shelters. USD 264 Coldwater also passed a $15 million dollar bond for school safety upgrades.
Sen. Moran reacts to Trump firing FBI director James Comey

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has fired FBI Director James Comey.In a statement, Trump says Comey’s firing “will mark a new beginning” for the FBI.
Kansas Senator Jerry Moran in an email did not support or condemn the President’s action.
“The American people deserve more information about the circumstances of Mr. Comey’s dismissal. The next FBI Director must be an impartial law enforcement professional dedicated to carrying out the Bureau’s critical mission of protecting the United States and its citizens.”
Kansas Senator Pat Roberts and First District Congressman Roger Marshall did not comment on the firing.
The White House says the search for a new FBI director will begin immediately.

HHS boys golf sets new school record; wins Liberal Invite
LIBERAL, Kan. – The Hays High boys golf team set a new school record and won the Liberal Invitational by one stroke over Garden City Tuesday at the Willow Tree Golf Course. The Indians shot a 291 which was six shots better than the old mark of 297 which was set in 1978 then matched in 2011.
Hays placed four in the top-10 led by Allen Zollinger and Tradgon McCrea who both fired a 1-under-par 71. Zollinger finished third and McCrea fourth. Peyton Kieffer was ninth with a 74 and Josh Norris 10th after a 75.
The Indians finish second in the final Western Athletic Conference standings. Zollinger and McCrea were both named First Team All-WAC with Josh Norris honorable mention.

TMP splits in Great Bend

GREAT BEND, Kan.-TMP held a 2-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the 6th inning in game one in Great Bend. The Lady Panthers’ Emma Cape stepped to the plate with two on and two outs and drove a pitch over the fence in left center field. TMP was not able put a run across in the top of the 7th and fell 3-2 in game one.
Game 2 saw Great Bend take a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Baylee Beck solo home run. The Lady Panthers took a 2-1 lead to the top of the fourth inning and almost made it through without damage. TMP opened the inning with two ground outs and that’s when they made a charge. Bridget Heimann go on base with a bloop single to left and scored on an RBI double from Alison Helget. TMP would take the lead for good when Meagan Brin singled home Helget.
Helget took the loss in the circle in game one while Bailey Lacy picked up the win in game two. TMP is now 14-6 and will start 3A Regional play next week in Russell.

Moustakas homers in 12th, Royals beat Rays
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – Mike Moustakas homered in the 12th inning, and the Kansas City Royals came back from a four-run deficit to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-6 on Tuesday night.
Moustakas connected against Diego Moreno (0-1), the eighth Tampa Bay pitcher, on a 1-2 pitch with one out. Moreno was promoted from Triple-A Durham before the game.
Kansas City right-hander Jakob Junis (1-0), recalled from Triple-A Omaha, worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the 11th. Kelvin Herrera got three outs for his fifth save.
Salvador Perez had a two-run homer for the Royals. The All-Star catcher went 3 for 4 and walked
HHS baseball swept at Andover Central
ANDOVER, Kan. – Andover Central scored the game-winning run on a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Hays High 3-2 in game one of their doubleheader. The Jaguars then scored three in the third and hold off the Indians 4-3 in game two for the doubleheader sweep Tuesday in Andover.
Trey Riggs had two hits including a double and drove in a run in the first contest. Grant Coffman allowed all three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and four walks and takes the loss.
The Indians rallied with two in the sixth and had the tying run on base with one out but a couple of flyouts ended the second game.
Trey Riggs, Palmer Hutchison and Grant Coffman all had three hits with Coffman driving in two. Nick Fisher allowed three runs on four hits in an inning of relief and takes the loss as the Indians fall to 8-8.
Hays hosts Liberal Thursday at 2 pm then closes out the regular season at home against Valley Center on Friday.

2 hospitalized after semi blown off I-70 in NW Kansas

SHERMAN COUNTY –Two people were injured in an accident early Tuesday when the truck was blown off Interstate 70 just east of the U.S. 24 exit in Sherman County.
The passing lane of both east and westbound lanes were briefly blocked for crews to complete the cleanup, according to the Sherman County Sheriff’s Department.
The semi driver and passenger were transported to the hospital for treatment and released.
No additional details were available Tuesday.
Kansas sheriff’s K-9 helps deputies find 28-pounds of pot

SEWARD COUNTY- Law enforcement authorities in Seward County are investigating a suspect on drug violatons.
Just before 1 a.m. Thursday, May 4, deputies stopped a vehicle in the 300 Block of West Pancake Boulevard in Liberal, according to Undersheriff Gene Ward.
The deputies requested K-9 officer Niko. The dog indicated there were illegal drugs in the vehicle and deputies found over 28 pounds of marijuana in the trunk.
No details were available on an arrest, according to Ward.
Hays, Ellis students inducted into FHSU Eta Sigma Delta Honor Society

Ten tourism and hospitality management students were recently inducted into the Fort Hays State University chapter of Eta Sigma Delta Honor Society.
Eta Sigma Delta, sponsored by the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education, recognizes outstanding tourism and hospitality management students and provides opportunities for them to distinguish themselves in the eyes of educators, recruiters and industry executives. The honor society currently has more than 90 active chapters around the world.

Kan. man sentenced; used Snake Slayer derringer in drug crime

WICHITA – A Kansas man was sentenced Monday to five years in federal prison for carrying a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking, according to U.S. Attorney Tom Beall.
Daniel Christian Thomas, 32, Wichita, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. In his plea, he admitted he was driving a PT Cruiser that had been reported stolen when the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s office stopped him.
A search of the car turned up a .45 caliber Bond Arms Snake Slayer derringer and .410 shotgun shells as well three baggies containing methamphetamine, two digital scales and approximately $1,000 in cash.
