Man shot by Kansas deputies remains in serious condition

MOUND VALLEY, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a man wounded over the weekend as southeast Kansas sheriff’s deputies responded to an earlier shooting remains in serious condition.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation identified the man as 40-year-old David Whinery, of Mound Valley. The KBI says Whinery was standing in a driveway with a gun Saturday when two Labette County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call about the initial shooting at a Mound Valley home. The KBI says it appears that both deputies fired at Whinery. Neither deputy was hurt.

The victim of the first shooting, 77-year-old James Bullock Sr. of Mound Valley, has been treated at a hospital and released. It’s unclear what led up to Bullock being shot.

The KBI says the investigation is ongoing.

February 2014 in Geary County, Kan. In their pleas, Anderson and Middleton admitted that on Feb. 7, 2014, they and co-defendants met the victim, who was a prostitute, at a hotel in Junction City and kidnapped her. The defendants beat the victim in retribution for comments the victim had made on social media about having a sexual relationship with Anderson. During the beating, the defendants demanded the victim pay $300. They took the victim to another hotel room in an unsuccessful attempt to get the money, after which they transported the victim to a residence on Fort Riley.

While there, the defendants allowed the victim to call her mother. The victim’s mother realized the victim was in danger and called Junction City Police. When police called the victim’s number to check on her, and the defendants listened to the call on speaker phone. Fearing arrest, the defendants transported the victim to a bridge in a remote part of Geary County, where they resumed the beating and attacked her with a knife. The victim broke free and jumped off the bridge, falling 15 feet and breaking her ankle. Some of the defendants found the victim in the snow and resumed the assault during which they cut her throat and killed her.

Co-defendants include:

Moran legislation to combat veteran suicide supported by veterans organizations

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.)

OFFICE OF SEN. MORAN

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) – chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies and member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee – sponsored legislation led by U.S. Senators John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) to combat veteran suicide.

The Veterans Overmedication Prevention Act (S. 992) would direct the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to conduct an independent study on the deaths of all veterans being treated at the VA who died by suicide, from an accidental drug overdose and other means related to their passing in the last five years.

“The number of veterans who take their own lives each year remains alarmingly high despite the efforts of many at the VA, community providers and nonprofit groups working to care for those who have served our nation,” Sen. Moran said. “We must do everything we can to put a stop to this disturbing trend – this legislation is one step among many we should take as we work to provide veterans with the care they need to end veteran suicide.”

A 2016 report by the Department of Veterans Affairs found that an average of 20 veterans a day die from suicide, accounting for nearly a quarter of all deaths from suicide among U.S. adults; however, more substantive research is critical to properly address this epidemic among veterans. Since 2001, the rate of veteran suicide has increased by 32 percent. After controlling for age and gender, this makes the risk of suicide 21 percent higher for veterans than the average U.S. adult.

A primary reason for the review by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is to determine the relationship between veteran suicides and prescription medication. Additionally, this legislation would direct the VA to perform a more comprehensive review of its behavioral health workforce with a focus on mental health counselors in an effort to address workforce shortages.

The legislation is also supported by the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, AMVETS and the National Board for Certified Counselors.

FHSU’s Perkins tied for third after first round of Regional

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Fort Hays State sophomore golfer Hannah Perkins sits in a tie for third place after Monday’s first round of the 2017 NCAA Division II Super Region 3 Championship, hosted by Augustana University at Minnehaha Country Club. Perkins fired an opening round 4-over-par 75 to finish one shot back of the leaders.

“We had a great day to play golf,” said Perkins. “Overall I was able to take advantage. Got off to a slow start, but we rallied for a strong finish.”

Perkins recorded 13 pars in the opening round, third-most in the 66-player field. After opening the day with two bogeys over her first three holes, the Wichita, Kan. native gave back just two more strokes over her final 15 holes.

“I thought she hit the ball really well today,” said head coach Rich Guffey. “She was putting herself in position all day, hitting a lot of greens.”

Her lone birdie came on the par-5 seventh hole, where she reached the green in two and finished with a nice two-putt. In total, Perkins hit 10 greens in regulation.

“I gave myself quite a few birdie chances, which allowed for some easy pars,” said Perkins. “Just couldn’t get many birdie putts to fall.”

The round of 75 is the best round for a Tiger in a regional in program history, four shots better than the previous mark (Shelby White, 79, 2006 West Regional).

“The experience here has been wonderful,” said Perkins. “I’m happy to be here and have the chance to play against some of the best girls in the country. I’m doing my best to soak everything in and enjoy the experience.”

Anna Pool (Central Oklahoma) and Savannah Stone (Concordia-St. Paul) are tied for the lead after shooting 74 (3-over) in the first round.

Perkins will tee off at 9:40 a.m. in round two Tuesday morning (May 9).

“If she keeps hitting the ball like she did today, I think we’ll be in a pretty good spot,” said Guffey.
