Fort Hays State men’s basketball coach Mark Johnson announced the signing of Marcus Cooper for the 2017-18 season on Thursday. Cooper is the fourth addition to the team for the upcoming season, coming to FHSU from Northeastern (Colo.) Junior College. He attended Fresno State University in the spring of 2017, but did not play, remaining with two years of eligibility coming to FHSU.
Cooper, a native of Van Nuys, Calif., put together two solid years at Northeastern (Colo.) Junior College, playing under former FHSU assistant coach Eddie Trenkle. As a sophomore in 2015-16 he averaged a team-best 16.4 points, while adding 6.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. He shot 50.2 percent from the field and 39.5 percent beyond the 3-point line, while shooting 80.7 percent from the free-throw line on 207 attempts. He had a game-high of 33 points and buried 10 or more free-throws in a game eight times.
As a freshman in 2014-15 he averaged 6.0 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. He shot 52.8 percent from the field and 37.5 percent beyond the 3-point line that year, while shooting 74.5 percent from the free-throw line.
Cooper is the third transfer signing with the Tigers, joining Calvin Harrington and KeShawn Wilson. Nyjee Wright is the lone high school signing for the program so far this offseason.
