DODGE CITY, Kan. – The Butler County Cubs used a four-run fifth inning to erase a one-run deficit then added five more runs in the sixth to beat the Hays Monarchs American Legion 9-1 in the opening pool play game for both Friday at the Dodge City Baseball Club Tournament at Cavalier Field.
The Monarchs (6-3) grabbed the lead in the fourth when Trent Mayo grounded to second scoring Luke Ruder.
Gavin Schumacher had two of the Monarchs three hits.
Tate Garcia gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and a walk over five innings and suffered the loss.
The Monarchs play two more pool play games Saturday against the Hays Eagles and Russell.
