Judy Zerr-Schamberger, Friends of the Library treasurer, works in the newly renovated space at the Friends of the Library bookstore.

The Friends of the Library Gallery Bookstore is having a grand reopening this week to show off its renovated space.

The bookstore revamped its shelves and permanently attached them to the walls, as well as moved the desk to create more shelf space for books.

Judy Zerr-Schamberger, Friends of the Library treasurer, said the bookstore had several instances where shelves had fallen on people. For safety reasons, the Friends group decided to permanently attach the shelves.

Zerr-Schamberger said the permanent shelves give the bookstore a little less flexibility, but safety is more important.

If you visit the bookstore, you will notice some of the sections have been moved. The children’s books have been move to the corner to give children an area to sit while they are reading.

The bookstore is handing out free book bags and bookmarks to visitors this week.

All proceeds from the bookstore go back to the library.

The Friends of the Library is in need of volunteers to work in the bookstore. More information can be found by calling 785-625-9014 or emailing [email protected]. Volunteer training is offered the fourth Monday of the month to any Friends of the Library member.

Memberships start at $5 for individuals, $1 for students younger than 18.

Donations for the bookstore are accepted during business hours at the library front desk. The bookstore does not take magazines, but DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, and sheet music are accepted as well as books.

The cost of items in the bookstore start at 25 cents for sheet music and go up to $3 for newly published books.

The bookstore is located on the Main Floor Gallery of the library and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays as volunteers are available.
