SALINE COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities continue investigating a reported theft of over $2,200 from the Central National Bank last week and have released security camera photos of the suspects.
Just before 3:30 p.m., a bank employee told Salina Police that a man entered the bank, located inside Walmart, 2900 South Ninth, and asked to exchange $4,800 in $20 bills for $100 bills, according Police Captain Paul Forrester.
The man then asked to exchange the $100 bills for Canadian currency.
When the bank employee told the man that the bank did not do currency exchanges, he asked for the $20 bills back.
While the clerk was collecting the $4,800 in $20 bills, the man pocketed $2,200 from the stack of $100 bills. He and a female suspect then left the bank with $7,000.
The suspects left in a white or silver GMC Acadia, according to Forrester.
More than a year ago, Billy Sims BBQ named Hays as a potential location to expand the restaurant of Heisman Trophy winner and Oklahoma University running back Billy Sims. Fast forward a year later and Billy Sims BBQ is set to open on July 27 at 4310 Vine at Tebo Village.
Franchisee David Dunn will open his eighth location for the growing franchise when he opens the Hays restaurant. Dunn said the location and community were contributing factors to bringing the franchise to Hays.

“A lot of people go for the large cities. I like what I call the mid-markets. The population of Hays is perfect. I think the need for good barbecue is perfect, there’s not a lot of barbecue here and what we have is very good, so I think this community will really like it,” Dunn said. “The fact that it’s a college town helps bring a lot more people to town certain times of the year. I like that. I do like the fact that it’s right off of I-70. We get a lot of traveler traffic and the community is a big thing.”
The restaurant in Hays will be Dunn’s third location to open in the past month and is the seventh Billy Sims BBQ to open in Kansas.
“We have enjoyed tremendous growth in the past few years and much of that is owed to our success in Kansas,” said co-founder and CEO Jeff Jackson in a press release. “We’ve wanted to reach the northwest part of the state for some time, and now we can introduce Kansans in the Hays area to our menu and great barbecue.”
Billy Sims BBQ features a menu of nine meats that are smoked daily in-house and they also serve traditional sides such as potato salad, smoked baked potatoes, smoked corn, coleslaw and salads.
Billy Sims himself will be at the restaurant all day July 28 and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 29 to meet guests and customers and also sign autographs.

TROY, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas judge has ordered a competency evaluation for a homeless man charged with killing a man whose body was found in the Missouri River.
Proceedings in the Doniphan County case against 40-year-old Christopher Colhour are on hold until the evaluation is completed. Colhour is being held without bond on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and felony theft in the death of 64-year-old Daniel Purvis, of St. Joseph, Missouri. Colhour’s defense attorney says Colhour previously has been diagnosed as being schizophrenic, bipolar and suffering from auditory hallucinations.
Law enforcement in Missouri and Kansas searched streams and rivers for Purvis after he disappeared around May 22. The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department in Missouri recovered Purvis’ body May 27 just south of St. Joseph.

The Hays school board voted Monday night to reduce workbook/material fees for all students for the upcoming school year by $45.
The fee will drop from $135 to $90.
The drop in fees will cost the district about $90,000, but this will be offset by an increase in state aid.
The new base state aid per pupil will be raised to $4,006 for the 2017-2018 school year, which is estimated to bring an additional $1.9 million to the district this year.
Board member Luke Oborny said, “This has been a goal, and this has been one of the things that we have worked toward, and I am happy to vote for this.”
Board president Lance Bickle also said he supported the reduction in fees and looked forward to chipping away further at the fees in the future.
In other business, the board:
• Approved the milk bid from Hiland Dairy for the 2017-2018 school year
• Approved a copier paper bid from Contract Paper Group for $21,627.60.
• Approved a Title VI-B budget for special education
• Approved special meetings for 7 a.m. Aug. 10 for the annual budget hearing and 5:30 p.m. Aug. 24 for the budget approval.

Remembering Amelia Earhart
This past Sunday would have been Amelia Earhart’s 120th birthday. Two weeks ago, I spoke from the House Floor to recognize this Kansan’s important contributions to our state, aviation, women and our national pride.
Senator Dole embodies what it means to be a public servant, a leader and a Kansan. I am proud to call him a friend, and I am humbled to bear the awesome responsibility of serving in the Congressional seat he one held. For as long as I can remember, Bob Dole has been a role model. Today, he is a mentor and continues as a shining example of international leadership. This serves as a great occasion for my colleagues to remember leaders like Senator Dole, who never forgot the human impact of each bill, who truly serves the public, and who never forgot where he was from – Russell, Kansas.
Last week, the House Ag Committee took a break from farm bill hearings to talk about another topic vital to rural America: Infrastructure.
This is not only regarding transportation. Many folks across the country take for granted the power of access to the internet. As we represent our rural communities and businesses, we must ensure that improved communications technologies and broadband infrastructure are realities all Kansans and Kansas businesses.
WASHINGTON— Kansas statesman Bob Dole has been nominated for the highest civilian honor Congress bestows.
Sen. Pat Roberts and Rep. Lynn Jenkins are seeking to honor the longtime senator with the Congressional Gold Medal. Roberts and Jenkins jointly introduced resolutions Monday, two days after Dole’s 94th birthday.
The resolution says that Dole has “embodied the American spirit of leadership and determination.” Co-sponsors include the entire Kansas delegation, along with a bipartisan list of representatives and senators from around the country. Two-thirds of the House and Senate must agree to co-sponsor the resolution to award the medal.
The Russell native served 27 years in the Senate and 10 years in the House. Dole was the GOP presidential nominee in 1996, losing the election to Bill Clinton.
