At 9:31 a.m. Thursday, the City of Hays Fire Department and Ellis County Fire Department Company 5, assisted by the Hays Police Department and Ellis County EMS, was dispatched to a building fire at 700 E. Sixth, Lot 137. Upon arrival, firefighters found a well-involved fire in a single-family dwelling.

Firefighters quickly controlled the fire using two hose lines. Fires crews did a thorough overall search of the residence, checking for hidden fires. The fire was reported to be under control at 10:16 AM.

The building sustained major damage. The most probable cause of the fire was improper discarding of cigarettes. Fire crews stayed on scene for two hours to make sure the fire didn’t rekindle.

The resident was injured and transported by Ellis County EMS to Hays Medical Center.

Six fire trucks and 25 firefighters responded.

The last firefighters left the scene at 12:39 p.m.
