All 900 students and staff at Hays High School participated in an off-site evacuation drill Friday at about 10:30 a.m.
The students were moved out of the building, attendance was taken, the students were moved to an off-site evacuation area and attendance was taken again.
Tom Albers, assistant principal, said every student was accounted for.
This is a part of an annual drill for the school district. The district has planned such an evacuation in a case of such things as a chemical spill that would require moving students and staff to a location off school grounds.
Hays police cooperated in controlling traffic during the drill.
Albers said he was very pleased with the cooperation of all the students and staff during the drill, which was completed in about an hour.
“It was awesome,” he said. “I am very proud of the student body. They handled themselves well and were well-mannered.”
