SELZER: Kansans should watch out for deer— because they are not watching us

Ken Selzer, Kansas Insurance Commissioner

It is the time of the year again when deer just don’t pay attention to signs—or vehicles. As if they ever do.

The reality of driving on Kansas roads and highways from now through spring is the possible encounter with a deer. Consider the following statistics.

· Kansas ranks in the top 20 states in frequency of deer-vehicle mishaps. The chance of a driver having a vehicle collision with a deer in Kansas is approximately 1 in 125.

· The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) 2016 deer crash report shows 10,150 total crashes, with 495 injuries and 7 deaths. This is the highest number of deer-related crashes in the state since 2011.

· The national average cost per vehicle claim from a deer-vehicle collision hovers around $4,000, according to reports.

· The southern and southeastern portions of the state have the highest number of reported deer crashes, according to KDOT statistics. Almost half of Kansas counties show that one in three of their total vehicles crashes is deer-related.

Kansas motorists should check with their insurance agents to find out the type of vehicle accident damage coverage their policies have. Deer accidents are usually covered under a person’s comprehensive coverage, not collision coverage. You will have to pay your deductible amount in order to receive your company’s coverage. However, if you have liability only for your vehicle coverage, you will probably have to cover the damage repairs out of your own pocket.

When a vehicle-deer crash occurs, you should consider the following:

  • Contact your insurance agent or company quickly to begin the claims process.
  • If you do hit a deer and are uncertain whether the animal is dead, keep your distance. You might be dealing with an injured, wild animal with sharp hooves.
  • If the deer is blocking the roadway and poses a danger to other motorists, you should immediately report the incident to the local law enforcement agency.
  • Stay alert, always wear your seat belt and drive at a safe, sensible speed for conditions.
  • Watch for the reflection of deer eyes and for deer silhouettes on the shoulder of the road.
  • Do not rely exclusively on devices such as deer whistles, deer fences and reflectors to deter deer.
  • When driving at night, use high-beam headlights when there is no opposing traffic. The high beams will illuminate the eyes of deer on or near a roadway.
  • Brake firmly when you notice a deer in or near your path, but stay in your lane. Many serious accidents occur when drivers swerve to avoid a deer and hit other vehicles or lose control of their cars. Potentially, you will risk less injury by hitting the deer.
  • If you see one deer, it is likely there are more nearby.
  • If the deer stays on the road, stop on the shoulder, put on your hazard lights and wait for the deer to leave the roadway; do not try to go around the deer while it is on the road.

If you do have a deer encounter and need some assistance with your vehicle claim, our Consumer Assistance Representatives at the Kansas Insurance Department can help. Call us at 800-432-2484, or use the online chat feature at our website, www.ksinsurance.org.

Bonifacio’s HR helps Royals rally to beat Diamondbacks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Jorge Bonifacio and Jake Junis are auditioning for 2018 jobs.

Bonifacio hit a three-run homer with two outs in the sixth inning to help the Kansas City Royals to a 4-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night.

Bonifacio’s homer, his 17th, came off Archie Bradley (3-3) with Paulo Orlando and Ramon Torres aboard.

”I was looking for a fastball,” Bonifacio said. ”He throws 97. I was just trying to put the ball in play.”

He said he is unsure if he has established himself to be a starting outfielder for next year.

”I don’t know,” Bonifacio said. ”I’ll just come ready for spring training and try to make the team.”

Bradley lost for the first time since July 14, allowing a season-high three runs.

”The greatest part about this is, this isn’t the end of the season for us,” Bradley said. ”As much as we want to win and finish strong and finish the season on a high note, this is baseball. You’re going to make bad pitches and guys are going to hit them. For me, it’s just a reminder that I’m not invincible. Guys can hit pitches. Guys are going to hit pitches out of the park.”

Junis (9-3) allowed two runs on five hits, including A.J. Pollock’s home run in the sixth, to pick up the win. The right-hander’s nine victories are tied for the American League lead for rookies.

”I didn’t know that,” Junis said. ”That’s pretty special. That’s more than I could ever ask for in my rookie season.”

David Peralta’s fifth-inning double scored Rey Fuentes, who walked and stole second, with the first Diamondbacks’ run.

Arizona right-hander Taijuan Walker was pulled after five innings in his final start before the postseason. He allowed three hits and one run, while striking out six and walking one.

”Felt good, felt strong,” Walker said. ”I felt all my pitches were pretty solid today and it’s a good sign moving into the playoffs.”

Mike Moustakas grounded into a double play in the fourth, scoring Lorenzo Cain, for the only run Walker would allow.

Daniel Descalso’s run-producing triple in the eighth off Joakim Soria cut the Royals’ advantage to one run.

Mike Minor worked around a leadoff double in the ninth to collect his sixth save in eight chances. Minor has saves in his past six appearances.

”Mike’s filled that role really nice, really adjusted to it,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. ”He’s got great stuff. We know that, but you can have great stuff and not be a successful closer. You’ve got to have that special composure and competitiveness that he has.”

Zack Godley, who had a 3.40 ERA in 25 starts, made his first relief appearance of the year, pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt went 0 for 3 and finished September with a .175 batting average (14 for 80) to drop his average to .299.

ZACK ON WEDNESDAY

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo made it official, announcing RHP Zack Greinke would start the Wednesday wild-card game against the Rockies. He said Greinke ”felt great” after throwing 75 pitches in four-plus innings Friday. ”There’s no mystery to it,” Lovullo said. ”He’s been our horse all year long. I know he surpassed 200 innings. He’s won 17 games. He’s paced us on days where we needed somebody to pitch a big game. He’s been everything that we’ve needed all year long.”

GREINKE LACKED ROYALS’ VISION

Greinke told the Royals he wanted to be traded after the 2010 season and the club accommodated him by sending him to Milwaukee. Among the players the Royals received in return were SS Alcides Escobar and CF Lorenzo Cain, two integral parts of the Royals’ 2015 World Series championship club. ”Zack was a phenomenal player, but Zack didn’t believe we were going to win,” Royals manager Ned Yost said Saturday. ”Zack wanted to go somewhere he could win. I kept trying to tell him, `Zack, we’re going to win here. These kids are going to be good.’ But (he said), `I don’t believe it.’ After we won the World Series, I saw him at the Gold Glove banquet and made him tell me he was wrong. He just smiled said, `I was wrong.’ I had a good relationship with Zack. He really wanted to win. He just didn’t have the vision I had.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Diamondbacks: C Jeff Mathis (fractured right hand) was activated and started, singling in his first at-bat. He was removed after five innings. . RHP Jimmie Sherfy has not pitched since Sept. 24 because of triceps tightness.

Royals: LHP Danny Duffy will have minor surgery Tuesday to remove ”loose bodies” in the back of his elbow that caused inflammation and landed him on the disabled list in late August.

UP NEXT

Diamondbacks: LHP Robbie Ray, who is tied for first in the NL with a 1.79 road ERA, will start the finale.

Royals: LHP Jason Vargas will be going for his 19th win, which would lead the AL.

FHSU volleyball defeats Pittsburg State for first conference win

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Fort Hays State volleyball team picked up its first conference win of the season Saturday (Sept. 30), knocking off Pittsburg State in four sets (25-27, 25-19, 27-25, 25-22). The Tigers improve to 9-10 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while the Gorillas are now 3-14 on the year and 0-5 in the MIAA.

The Tigers totaled a .196 hitting percentage in the victory while limiting PSU to a .152 swing rate. FHSU also held a 10-8 advantage in blocks. Magan Alexander paced the team with 15 kills, with Callie Christensen adding 11 and Logan Wallick also reaching double figures with 10. Christensen matched Alexander with 15 points to lead the team after adding six blocks (two solo). Becca Page led the team with 25 assists while Taylor White recorded a team-high 18 digs.

The teams went back and forth in the early going before FHSU put together six-straight points to go in front 14-9. The Tigers later built the lead as high as nine, 21-12, but the Gorillas bounced back to score 10 of the next 11 points to tie things up at 22-22. The home team completed the incredible comeback by closing the set on a 5-2 run, winning the opening frame 27-25.

Fort Hays State never trailed in the second set, jumping in front 9-4 to force a Gorilla timeout. The Tigers kept the pressure on out of the huddle, scoring five of the next seven points to build the lead to eight, 14-6. The Gorillas closed as close as five, 22-17, but a kill from Christensen gave the Tigers a 25-19 victory and sent the teams into the locker room tied up at one.

Both teams went on several big runs in the third set, with the Tigers ultimately coming out on top to take a commanding 2-1 lead in the match. PSU scored five in a row early in the frame to go up 6-1 before the Tigers rallied to tie things up at 7-7. The Gorillas went back up by two, but FHSU once again responded with five consecutive points to grab a 14-11 lead. The Tigers led by as many as four, 19-15, before reaching set point, 24-21. The Gorillas fought off three-straight set points to tie things up, ultimately taking the lead to end a four-point run. Thankfully the Tigers had one final run in them, capturing the next three rallies to win the set on a kill from Wallick.

Fort Hays State was in control for the entirety of the fourth set, trailing only once by just one point. The teams traded points early on before PSU took a momentary 7-6 lead, followed quickly by three straight points for the Tigers. FHSU would lead for the remainder of the set, ultimately securing the match with a 25-22 victory. The Tigers built their lead up to six, 19-13, thanks to four consecutive points. As was the theme all night, Pittsburg State would not go away quietly, using an 8-3 run to close within one, 22-21. The Black and Gold secured the next two points to reach match point before Alexander sealed the victory with a kill two rallies later.

The Tigers are set to return to Gross Memorial Coliseum for a four-match homestand beginning Friday (Oct. 6) when FHSU will host Missouri Western at 6 p.m.

Kansas struggles with issuing Real ID compliant licenses

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas is about two months into issuing new driver’s licenses that comply with the federal Real ID Act, but some residents aren’t bringing the right documents.

Starting Oct. 1, 2020, residents who use their driver’s licenses to board domestic flights in the U.S. and enter some federal facilities such as military bases will need to have upgraded identification.

Kansas Department of Revenue’s driver’s license manager Breana Berroth told the Wichita Eagle that some residents looking to renew their licenses haven’t brought the proper documents.

Residents seeking to upgrade their licenses must show proof for their Social Security number and provide a birth certificate or U.S. passport. Those who’ve changed their name should also bring documents proving the legal name change.

New licenses cost $8.
