KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State senior Derick Gonzalez was named the MIAA Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (Sept. 19), helping the Tigers go 0-1-1 in non-conference play last week. Gonzalez finished the week accounting for all three goals scored for a total of six points.
Gonzalez put the Tigers on the board first in a 2-1 (2OT) loss to Seattle Pacific when he headed a ball in off a pass from Luis Mendez. He then scored both goals for FHSU in a 2-2 (2OT) tie with Western Washington. The first was a penalty kick in the 51st minute, then in the 76th minute, he knotted the score by rifling a shot into the net from the top of the box. The Tigers nearly finished with two draws on their west coast swing, but a goal allowed in the final minute of double overtime against Seattle Pacific resulted in a loss.
