ELLIS – A long-closed motel in Ellis is being razed and the lot cleared for new economic development in the town.
Demolition of the former Ellis House Inn, 203 W. 2nd Street, began Wednesday by M&D Excavating, Hays.
The Ellis Industrial Corporation Board took ownership of the land from the Frickey family of Sizewise in Ellis. The two commercial lots will be for sale to attract a developer, according to Travis Kohlrus, board president.
Located north of Love’s Travel Stop and west of Cancun restaurant, the land is close to Interstate 70.
“We’ve had some interest in the past from businesses that wanted to attract the I-70 travelers and we just didn’t have a suitable spot,” Kohlrus said. “This will be an awesome location just south of the interstate that can target those customers.
“We’re looking for a suitable business for a small town, something that will create jobs in Ellis and improve our quality of life.”
