Siemian, Broncos crush Elliott, Cowboys

DENVER (AP) – Trevor Siemian tied a career high with four touchdown passes and the Denver Broncos held Ezekiel Elliott to the worst game of his career – 8 yards on nine carries – in a 42-17 blowout of the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday in a game that included an hour-long lightning delay.

Aqib Talib’s 103-yard interception return for a touchdown with 53 seconds left was the final indignity for the Cowboys (1-1), who watched Von Miller end a career-long five-game sackless streak by dumping Dak Prescott twice.

Elliott, who’s playing while his appeal of a six-game suspension for domestic violence works its way through the courts, came into the game averaging 108 yards rushing per game and more than 5 yards a carry in his career.

The star in the backfield on this day was C.J. Anderson, who rushed for 118 yards and a score and also caught a TD pass for the Broncos, whose only big blemish in their fifth straight 2-0 start was the left leg injury to tackle Garett Bolles, their No. 1 draft pick who got hurt on the opening drive of the second half.

Two plays after Bolles was carted off, Siemian found Virgil Green for a 2-yard TD. Chris Harris Jr.’s interception set up Anderson’s 22-yard touchdown run that made it 35-10.

The Cowboys pulled to 35-17 on Jason Witten’s 28-yard catch that was set up by rookie Jourdan Lewis’ interception when the receiver he was covering slipped.

The Cowboys looked nothing like the team that dominated the Giants in their opener. They were seeking their first win in Denver since 1992 and instead lost to the Broncos for the sixth straight time.

Siemian threw scoring strikes of 10 and 6 yards to Emmanuel Sanders as the Broncos built a 21-10 halftime lead.

The Cowboys were lucky to be that close after a first half in which they managed just five first downs, converted one third down and were outgained 246 yards to 97.

The only touchdown for Dallas came on a 3-yard drive after DeMarcus Lawrence’s strip sack of Siemian after beating right tackle Menelik Watson, who also had a tough night in Denver’s opening win against the Chargers.

Dez Bryant beat Talib for the score two plays after Maliek Collins scooped up the loose ball after Lawrence’s first of two sacks.

Lawrence added a second sack before halftime, but was whistled for illegally leaping on a field goal on the next snap, and Denver capitalized on the 15-yard personal foul as Siemian found Anderson open in the flat for a 16-yard score that made it 14-7.

After Sanders’ second score, the Broncos boldly called a timeout with 1:33 left and Dallas, which had no timeouts remaining, capitalized on it when Dan Bailey tied his career-long field goal with a 56-yarder to pull the Cowboys to 21-10 with 2 seconds left before halftime.

The Cowboys began the day without their top cornerback, Orlando Scandrick, who broke his left hand last week, and they lost rookie Chidobe Awuzie (hamstring) and Nolan Carroll (concussion) in the first half.

Denver scored on its first drive when Siemian found Sanders for a 10-yard strike , and the Broncos were driving for another score but McManus pushed a 49-yarder wide right, his second miss in three attempts since signing his contract extension Monday.

LIGHTNING DELAY : The game was delayed by lightning for 62 minutes in the first quarter. The Cowboys were at midfield with 33 seconds left in the first quarter when the teams were told to head to their locker rooms and fans retreated to the concourses.

LEARY PLAYS: Ron Leary, who bolted Dallas for Denver’s four-year, $35 million deal in the offseason, played against his former team after clearing concussion protocol Saturday.

SPLIT ALLEGIANCES : DeMarcus Ware was the honorary alumni captain for the coin toss between the game pitting his former teams. He said he was thrilled to have played for both teams but would always root for Von Miller.

Ware retired in January after nine years in Dallas and three seasons in Denver because of chronic bad problems. He acknowledged he considered coming out of retirement when Broncos linebacker Shane Ray injured a wrist early in training camp but decided to stick with his new gig working for the NFL Network.

“I’ve played enough football,” he said.

Kansas teacher educates on sexual assault through rap music

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas high school teacher is educating his students about sexual assault by rapping about it.

The Kansas City Star reports that David Muhammad’s song “Fallen” was released Sept. 5. The social studies teacher wrote the song under the name “Brotha Newz.”

The song is inspired by things that trouble Muhammad about the way society talks about and addresses sexual violence.

Reports of two sexual assaults at Shawnee Mission East shook the school community at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year. One of the victims was Muhammad’s student, prompting him to want to speak more about preventing sexual assault.

Muhammad hopes his song will spark a conversation about the importance of men talking to men about sexual assault, and challenge the ways some mend are conditioned to sexualize women.

Hays man sentenced to 11 years for sex offenses

By JONATHAN ZWEYGARDT
Hays Post

A Hays man was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison Friday on a number of sex charges.

Keaton Molleker, 28, was sentenced to 135 months in prison after reaching an agreement to plead guilty to attempted rape, sexual battery, breach of privacy, abuse of a child and two counts of sexual exploitation of a child.

In September 2015, Molleker was arrested on a number of charges that included, attempted rape, aggravated sexual battery and sexual exploitation of a child.

The agreement was reached through mediation and Molleker was sentenced Friday in Ellis County District Court to 92 months for attempted rape, 34 months for sexual battery and nine months for breach of privacy. Those sentences will all run consecutively for the total 135 months.

Molleker also plead guilty to abuse of a child and two counts of sexual exploitation of a child with all three carrying a 32-month sentence. Those will run concurrent to the 135 months in prison.

According to the affidavit, police were called to Molleker’s then girlfriend’s home, on September 29, to remove an unwanted person.

She told police that she had found several nude photos of a child, that was known to be 16, on Molleker’s phone that appeared to have been taken in a bathroom, according to the affidavit. Upon further investigation, several more pictures of the same individual were discovered.

After he was brought in for questioning Molleker told investigators he had obtained eight hidden cameras that looked like smoke detectors.

During the course of the investigation officials seized a number images and videos that appeared to be taken using the hidden cameras.

Among the videos discovered was one of Molleker engaging in a sexual act with a young child present and another of Molleker engaging in unwanted sexual acts with a former girlfriend.

Molleker was remanded back to the Ellis County Jail and will be transfered to the Department of Corrections. He will also have to register as a sex offender and be subject to lifetime post release supervision.

Lawyers in the case still have to determine what to do with a number of electronic devices that were seized during the case. Some of the devices belong to Molleker and some do not.

FHSU women’s soccer advances past Hornets behind Stoddard’s two goals

EMPORIA, Kan. – In an offensive powered match, the Tigers got back to their winning ways as they slipped past Emporia State 3-2 in a non-conference match. Fort Hays State improves to 3-1-2 on the season after capturing their first victory in three matches.

Eden Stoddard got back to leading the Tigers on the pitch as she netted two goals to improve her season stat line in that category to five on the season. The first goal for Stoddard came after a rebound from Kylie Thomas at the 11 minute mark. Her second was a header off a cross from Jasmine Beaulieu 23 minutes into the match. Beaulieu would also put her name in the game as she earned her first goal of the season late in the second half off the cross bar to go-ahead and eventually seal the win.

With the Tigers leading the contest heading into halftime 2-0, the Hornets hoped to come out of the locker room with scoring on their mind. That scoring developed with 15 minutes left in the contest as back-to-back goals from Tanna Benfiel and Erica Self tied up the contest at 2-2. The offense could not hold up after that as Beaulieu netted her goal to help the Tigers to their third win of the season.

Kristen Thompson was back in goal for the Tigers as she captured two saves on the night. Thompson improves her saves this season to 15 on the year. With the win, Thompson is now 3-0 behind the net this season.

Next up for the Tigers is their first home game of the season as they take on Washburn in a non-conference match Friday (Sept. 22) at 8 p.m. at the Fort Hays State Soccer Stadium following the men’s match. Hunt scores 2 TDs as Chiefs hold on to beat Eagles

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs rookie Kareem Hunt reached the end zone twice, Travis Kelce took a shovel pass 15 yards for the go-ahead touchdown and Kansas City held on to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-20 on Sunday.

Kelce’s touchdown catch with 6:25 left and Hunt’s second TD scamper appeared to have put the game away.

But Carson Wentz hit Nelson Agholor for an answering score with 14 seconds left, and Trey Burton jumped on the onside kick a few seconds later to give the Eagles one last throw to the end zone.

Wentz unloaded from just inside the 50-yard line, but his pass fell incomplete as time expired.

Kelce finished with 103 yards through the air, highlighted by his somersaulting score. Hunt had 81 yards on the ground, building on a record-setting debut in which he piled up 246 yards from scrimmage in a season-opening victory in New England .

Alex Smith had 251 yards passing for the Chiefs (2-0). Cairo Santos was 2 for 2 on field goals.

Wentz finished with 333 yards and two touchdowns passing, despite facing relentless pressure all afternoon. The spunky quarterback also led the Eagles (1-1) with 55 yards rushing.

It was 13-all in the fourth quarter and Philadelphia had the ball when Wentz threw a pass that bounced off the Chiefs’ Justin Houston and into the arms of Chris Jones. The pick gave Kansas City the ball deep in Eagles territory, and Kelce hurdled into the end zone five plays later.

It was sweet atonement for the talented but troublemaking tight end, who earlier in the half got an earful from coach Andy Reid when he picked up a 15-yard penalty for taunting.

The Chiefs’ defense, missing star safety Eric Berry to a season-ending injury, kept the Eagles in check most of the game – and for good reason. They’re coached by Doug Pederson , who spent several years as the offensive coordinator in Kansas City and took the same system with him to Philadelphia.

JONES-ING: Along with his interception, Jones also piled up three sacks in a dominant performance for the second-year pro. The Chiefs’ defensive tackle even left briefly in the second half and appeared to be checked for a concussion before returning to the field.

GETTING COMFY: After struggling last week against Washington, Alshon Jeffery appeared to get on the same page with Wentz at Arrowhead Stadium. He finished with seven catches for 92 yards.

ERTZ-WHILE: Eagles tight end Zach Ertz had five catches for 97 yards, including a 53-yard catch late in the first half that ricocheted off the Chiefs’ Terrance Mitchell. That play appeared to have set up a chip-shot field goal, but Jake Elliott’s attempt missed as the half expired .

CLIPPED WINGS: The Eagles’ ailing secondary lost two more players when starting safety Rodney McLeod and backup cornerback Jaylen Watkins left with hamstring injuries in the first half. Philadelphia was already without starting cornerback Ronald Darby because of a dislocated ankle.

NAMING RIGHTS: The Chiefs renamed the TV booths at Arrowhead Stadium in honor of Len Dawson, their Hall of Fame quarterback and broadcaster. He is retiring from doing radio analysis after the season.

KWEC to host Cheyenne Bottoms Craft Fest

FHSU University Relations and Marketing

The Kansas Wetlands Education Center will host Cheyenne Bottoms Craft Fest – a free afternoon of crafts, demonstrations from local artisans and hands-on activities – from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center.

The KWEC, 592 NE K-156 Highway, is at the southeast side of Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area, northeast of Great Bend.

Participants will be able to meet local people who practice old crafts such as soap making, woodcarving and weaving. Participants will also have the opportunity to get hands-on with the presented crafts.

“Over the last few years, the KWEC has seen great interest in the quarterly workshop series,” said Jean Aycock, KWEC program specialist.

“With so many people excited about learning hands-on crafts, a craft festival featuring local artisans was a natural next step,” she said.

Past workshops include papermaking, basket weaving, cold process soap making and dyeing yarn with plants found in the area.

“There are quite a few people in central Kansas with a talent for these sorts of crafts with some even practicing them professionally,” said Aycock.

Rebecca Ford, owner of Artisan Soaps in Great Bend, got involved in the historic process of soap making out of her love for the finished product.

“Many get into soap making because they are in pursuit of a better solution for difficult skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema, and handmade soaps are a great alternative because they don’t have all of the irritating ingredients that are found in commercial projects,” said Ford. “But for me, I got into soap making because I just really like a good bar of handmade soap.”

Terry Asper, an artisan who will demonstrate at the fest, got her start in weaving through her participation in the Society for Creative Anachronism – a nonprofit that encourages the study of history through the hands-on learning of crafts and skills.

“These two artisans are just a few of the many local folks who will be displaying their work at the fest,” said Aycock.

For more information, call the KWEC at 1-877-243-9268.

Indians edge Royals, celebrate AL Central title

CLEVELAND (AP) – Corey Kluber pushed to the front of the Cy Young race with another dominant start and Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run homer as the Cleveland Indians celebrated a division title and edged the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Sunday.

Kluber (17-4), who has lost once since July 4, allowed three singles in seven innings and has not given up a run in 22 straight innings.

Encarnacion homered in the fourth off Danny Duffy (8-9) as the Indians improved to 33-5 since Aug. 11 despite getting only three hits.

The Royals closed to 3-2 in the eighth on a two-out, two-run single by Brandon Moss off Tyler Olson. Cody Allen finished the inning and then worked out of a two-on jam in the ninth for his 28th save.

Before the game, Cleveland raised a flag to commemorate its second straight AL Central title. The team officially clinched Saturday night when second-place Minnesota lost to Toronto.

Kansas man hospitalized after military vehicle rolls

SALINE COUNTY — A Kansas man was injured in an accident just after noon Sunday in Saline County.

Simpson was transported to Salina Regional Medical Center. A passenger Joshua R. Nicholson, 24, Grain Valley, MO., was not injured.  Both were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Despite an inquiry, the KHP did not release any additional details on the vehicle or those involved in the accident.

KASB report card: Kansas student outcomes falling

There is growing evidence that as Kansas has fallen behind in educational funding, we are also falling behind in student success outcomes,” said Mark Tallman, KASB associate executive director. “We are in danger of falling from a top achieving state to average or worse,” Tallman said.

Full ReportExecutive SummarySupplemental Information

The analysis shows Kansas has maintained its 10th rank among states over numerous student academic measurements and every state that ranks higher than Kansas spends more per pupil.

But the report also shows that Kansas student outcomes have started to fall as total funding per pupil in Kansas fell behind most states since 2008.

The percent of Kansas students scoring at the basic and proficient level in NAEP tests have declined. In addition, the Kansas high school graduation rate, while 20th in the nation, has seen a lower rate of improvement over the past few years than the average of all states.

Another trouble spot is in higher education achievement.

Kansas exceeds the national average in the percentage of 18- to 24-year-olds with some college or higher, but the state’s rate of increase in this area since 2005 ranks near the bottom of states. This comes at a time when studies show within three years seven out of 10 jobs will require some post-secondary achievement and states with the highest average incomes are generally those with the most educated population.

Meanwhile, Kansas’ ranking for K-12 dollars fell from 29th to 31st between 2014 and 2015 and the percent increase in per pupil funding in between 2008 and 2015 ranked 39th and was much less than the states that outperform Kansas in education results.

“This report validates the 2017 Legislature’s action to increase school funding significantly for the first time in almost a decade,” Tallman said. “It also supports the Kansas Supreme Court’s ruling that funding has not been adequate. Finally, it adds urgency to the State Board of Education’s Kansans Can vision and goals.”
