Hays school psychologist wins Edna L Harrison Pioneer Award

USD 489

The Edna L Harrison Pioneer Award award has been given to Hays school psychologist Kyle Carlin.

The award helps to address the need to reframe the role of Kansas school psychologists as educational and mental health providers.

The award serves to validate those practitioners who are engaging in innovative health service delivery and working to meet the needs of children with increasingly more diverse and challenging needs.

Carlin is an active member of the Kansas Association of School Psychologists as well as holding seats on committees within the Kansas State Department of Education that focus on appropriate service provision and mental health needs within the schools.

He is a strong advocate for schools, families, children and other school psychologists at both the local and state levels.

Within his practice as a school psychologist, Carlin has developed and delivered in-service training to district personnel, helped to structure school systems including the System Integration Testing process, and recently has taken on the position of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports coordinator in USD 489 a position that was created based on and directly linked to his efforts and advocacy.

Alleged hate crime at K-State blamed on severe weather

MANHATTAN —The Kansas State University Police Department has concluded the investigation of damage to a Sukkah and vehicles and determined that severe weather caused the damage. A Sukkah is a temporary Jewish gathering place, according to a media release from KSU.

K-State Police received a report of damage to a Sukkah and multiple vehicles between Marlatt and Goodnow halls on Friday, Oct. 6. The investigation began as a possible criminal damage to property report, but after interviews, research and further investigation, police determined that the damage was caused by Friday night’s thunderstorms, heavy rain and high winds. No malicious intent was discovered.

Police were contacted by eyewitnesses who saw the Sukkah tumbling in the wind during the storm with no people around it. A witness saw the Sukkah resting on a vehicle in the adjacent parking lot. Police have determined this took place between 10 p.m. and 10:09 p.m. on Friday based on witness statements and time stamps on photos shared with police. The investigation uncovered damage to additional vehicles parked in the area.

“We now consider this case closed and have determined no crime has taken place,” said Lt. Bradli Millington, K-State Police public information officer.

Kiwanis, CVB work to revive trips to Fort

Hays CVB

While it’s common to see school buses bringing field trips to the Fort Hays State Historic Site from neighboring communities, as of late, Hays schoolchildren have been absent.

The Kiwanis Club of Hays and the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau are working together to change that.

On Thursday, two fourth grade classes totaling 43 students from Lincoln Elementary toured Fort Hays free of charge, courtesy of a generous donation from Kiwanis. All third and fourth grade teachers in the USD 489 school district are encouraged to make arrangements for a free tour for their students by contacting the Fort.

“We can’t have our local kids – the future of Hays – growing up not knowing the history of our Fort,” said CVB Executive Director Melissa Dixon. “Our staff is always looking for ways we can support the Fort, and in this case, it was just a matter of making a few phone calls. Then the school district helped us get the word out to each school.”

Anna Schonthaler and Lisa Kruse, fourth grade teachers at Lincoln, were the first to sign their classes up for the field trip.

“I was really excited when I saw the email from our principal about it,” said Kruse.

Kiwanis members had worked with Fort Hays in the past to cover the admission of local elementary school students, and were more than willing to pick up the partnership again.

“We have visitors from all over the world, but most of our local students have never been here,” said the site’s administrator, Tammy Younger. “We are grateful for the help of our CVB and The Kiwanis Club of Hays for their support. Our local students have a wonderful opportunity to learn the history of Fort Hays and the town they call home.”

The Fort Hays State Historic Site is located at 1472 U.S. 183 Alternate and is open Wednesday–Sunday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. For tour information, contact Tammy Younger at 785-625-6812.

Fort Hays is funded by the state through the Kansas Historical Society. The site is also supported by the Society of Friends of Historic Fort Hays.

Upcoming free events at Fort Hays include “Graveside Conversations” on Saturday, October 28 from 7-9 p.m. and “Presenting Elizabeth Polly, the Blue Light Lady” Sunday, October 29 at 2 p.m.

The Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau is located in the Hays Welcome Center at 2700 Vine Street. For information about the CVB or community events, call 785-628-8202 or go to www.visithays.com.
