Trump calls ‘Obamacare’ a broken mess; halts payments to insurers

President Trump during Thursday’s White House announcement on healthcare

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump and health care (all times local):

7:15 a.m.

President Donald Trump is calling the so-called “Obamacare” law a “broken mess” after his move that’s likely to roil insurance markets.

Trump tweeted Friday that “piece by piece” his administration will begin the process of “giving America the great HealthCare it deserves!”

The White House said late Thursday it would immediately halt payments to insurers under the Obama-era health care law.

The subsidies help lower copays and deductibles for people with modest incomes. Stopping the payments would trigger a spike in premiums for next year unless Trump reverses course or Congress authorizes the money.

President Donald Trump is inviting congressional Democrats to “call me to fix” America’s health care system, as he prepares an order ceasing federal subsidy payments to health insurers.

In a pre-dawn post on his Twitter account Friday, the president reiterated his oft-stated argument that “Obamacare is imploding.”

Addressing Democrats, he tweeted that “massive subsidy payments to their pet insurance companies has stopped. Dems should call me to fix!”

Since his presidential campaign and nearly nine months in office, Trump has persistently called for getting rid of the 2010 Obama law. His fellow Republicans joined him in that cause, but neither Trump nor the GOP has been able to muster sufficient strength to get the repeal bill through the Senate.

In a brash move likely to roil insurance markets, President Donald Trump will “immediately” halt payments to insurers under the Obama-era health care law he has been trying to unravel for months.

The Department of Health and Human Services made the announcement in a statement late Thursday. “We will discontinue these payments immediately,” said acting HHS Secretary Eric Hargan and Medicare administrator Seema Verma. Sign-up season for subsidized private insurance starts Nov. 1, in less than three weeks, with about 9 million people currently covered.

In a separate statement, the White House said the government cannot legally continue to pay the so-called cost-sharing subsidies because they lack a formal authorization by Congress.

K of C Tootsie Roll drive this weekend across Kansas

David Dunn, Hays K of C Tootsie Roll Drive chairman with Mayor Shaun Musil.

Hays Post

You’ll be seeing men in yellow this weekend at the doors of several Hays businesses, their outstretched hands filled with candy.

Not to worry. These volunteers are members of the seven local Knights of Columbus councils working the 47th annual K of C Tootsie Roll Drive.

The drive dates are the same across Kansas, Friday through Sunday, Oct. 13, 14 and 15.

Proceeds are for the benefit of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“Twenty percent of the money goes to the state Special Olympics basketball tournament held here in Hays,” according to Hays drive chairman Dave Dunn. “The remaining 80 percent comes back to each local council which decides the groups it will go to.” The Hays Knights distribute their funds among Bethesda Place, the Arc of Central Plains, and Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas (DSNWK).

The event has allowed DSNWK to create a special fund.

“For many years, the generosity of the Knights has allowed us to offer additional support to those we serve through a variety of ways,” said Steve Keil, director of development for DSNWK. “One of those ways is DSNWK’s Consumer Medical Fund established with the contributions from the K of C Tootsie Roll Drive. This fund assists our people with the cost of medical items and care not covered by Medicaid such as dental expenses and adaptive equipment.”

“Every year we raise about $15,000 locally. Last year each Hays council had $1,710 to give out,” Dunn said. In addition to the donations from individuals in exchange for the Tootsie Roll, local businesses also make outright donations, “usually about $4,000,” he calculated.

The seven Knights of Columbus Councils in Ellis County are associated with Catholic churches at Fort Hays State University, Schoenchen, Munjor, and Catherine, along with three in Hays.

Dunn estimates there are more than 1,200 local K of C members. “The membership skews older but we have a number of younger guys coming in at each council.”

It’s the younger guys who will be posted at the Hays locations including Walmart, Dillons, Cervs and churches after Masses.

Dunn has chaired the Tootsie Roll Drive since 2002. “A couple of years ago, I was working the final shift, 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon, and my donation can was stuffed just as full as it for the first two hour shift on Friday. People are generous.”

Tiger volleyball falls to No. 20 Central Missouri

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State volleyball team jumped out to an early lead against 20th-ranked Central Missouri, but it wasn’t enough as the Jennies rallied for a four-set victory Thursday evening inside Gross Memorial Coliseum (25-21, 15-25, 20-25, 12-25). The Tigers dip to 9-13 overall and 1-7 in the MIAA, while the Jennies move up to 16-4 this season and 7-1 in league action.

Brandi Fairbank Postgame Interview

The Tigers played nearly mistake-free in the opening set, totaling a .294 attack percentage after just four errors. FHSU was unable to keep up its strong pace, however, finishing the match with a .082 swing rate. The Black and Gold were able to hold the potent Jennies offense under its season average swing rate (.247), limiting UCM to a .221 hitting percentage.

Magan Alexander had a strong day at the net for the Tigers, reaching double figures in kills for the 11th time this season with 14 kills and a .289 swing rate. She was nearly perfect in the first set, picking up six kills and no errors on 10 swings. Sydney Dixon also reached double figures, adding 12 kills and six digs. Azlyn Cassaday paced the team with 14 digs, matching her season high. Callie Christensen had a game-high six blocks, including two solo swats.

All-MIAA middle hitter Kasey Hohlen had a career night for the Jennies, recording a personal-best 22 kills while swinging at a .463 clip.

The first set was a back-and-forth affair the entire way, with the teams combining for 13 ties and eight lead changes. Neither side led by more than two until the Tigers scored five in a row to turn a one point deficit into a four point lead, 20-16. Cassaday dropped in a pair of service aces during the run, with Dixon and Alexander also adding kills. The Jennies closed within one after a timeout, 22-21, prompting interim head coach Brandi Fairbank to call a timeout of her own. Her team came out of the huddle inspired, capturing the next three points to win the set, 25-21. Alexander started the run with a kill before Kylie Rollman added one of her nine kills on the night. The Tigers secured a 1-0 lead in the match after a Jennie attack error.

Fort Hays State took an early lead in the second set, but the Jennies slowly built their lead thanks to a 13-5 run. UCM ultimately led by as many as 10, evening the match with a 25-15 win.

The Tigers had their chances in the third set, leading by three as late as 19-16. UCM captured the next four points to jump in front for the first time in the frame, 20-19, before an attack error evened the score at 20. Fort Hays State was unable to take advantage, dropping the next five points to lose the set, 25-20, and fall behind 2-1 in the contest.

Central Missouri left nothing to doubt in the final set, never trailing in the frame and quickly leading by six (9-3) thanks to a 7-1 run. The Tigers tried to chip away at the lead, but the Jennies seemed to have an answer at every turn. UCM scored six of the last seven points in the set, taking the fourth set, 25-12, and the match, 3-1.

The Tigers wrap up their four-match homestand Friday when they face off with Lindenwood at 6 p.m.

HUNNEWELL, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say an 86-year-old woman who disappeared after leaving a Kansas casino has been found dead near the state’s southern border with Oklahoma.

The Sumner County Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Westmoreland says Dixie Adair may have left her car after it became stuck in mud on a rural dirt road. Her body was discovered Thursday about 200 feet from her car in the southern part of the county.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation had issued a Silver Alert for Adair, saying she went missing Monday morning after a trip to the Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane near Wichita. She lived in Rose Hill, which is less than 10 miles northeast of the casino. An aircraft eventually spotted her car 40 miles to the south. She apparently had become lost.

SUMNER COUNTY —The Silver Alert issued Monday for a missing Kansas woman was canceled Thursday evening, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Authorities found the body of 86-year-old Dixie Adair in a field near the Kansas-Oklahoma border.
