HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback went on an unpublicized, eight-day trade mission to Israel in late August and early September.
The schedule included a 90-minute meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Aug. 30.
The trip came a month after President Donald Trump nominated Brownback to serve as U.S. ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom.
But Brownback administration officials said the trip promoted Kansas businesses and sought to further ties between the state and Israel.
The state Department of Commerce said the schedule in Israel from Aug. 26 until Sept. 2 included visits to Israeli businesses and discussions, a stop at a hospital and discussions of irrigation and water treatment.
The department estimates the cost of the trip at about $32,000.

The Ellis County Commission approved an agreement to install a cattle guard at Horse Thief Canyon in northern Ellis County.
The Garvert Family Trust, owners of the property in far northern Ellis County, asked the county to pay for the cattle guard and the installation. In June, the commission agreed the county would provide the cattle guard, but the property owner would have to pick it up from the county shop and install it.
Horse Thief Canyon Road runs across the Garvert property, and they received federal funding for erosion control measures. According to County Administrator Phillip Smith-Hanes, they are going to use cross fencing to divide the pasture. That allows them to graze two different portions of the pasture at different times.
Ellis County Public Works crews built the cattle guard to their specifications and paid for the construction. The county will also be responsible for maintaining the cattle guard.
A “shoe fly” road will be constructed while the cattle guard is installed to allow traffic to continue using the road in that area.
Public Works Director Bill Ring estimated it would take about two weeks to install the cattle guard.
In other business Monday, the commission approved further repairs to a 2008 Caterpillar road grader. The commission had already approved engine repairs to the grader, but the county decided to have repairs done on the transmission while it was being worked on.
The commission was scheduled to get an update on large lot subdivisions within the “three-mile zone” surrounding the city of Hays but that update was rescheduled because the city commission did not meet last week.

“I was very lucky to have the privilege of representing the city of Hays,” said Meier. “It was an incredible opportunity to promote our community. But I am most fortunate to have been able to spend time with Leo and Viola Dorzweiler. I’m so thankful they were willing to come along as ambassadors of our community. What a priceless asset they are to Hays.”

NCK Tech’s Culinary Arts program provided 200 spitzbuben, German Christmas cookies, to give away at the Hays booth.
The Dorzweilers, who have been married 62 years, brought their own dance floor and taught polka steps to visitors while hand-picked accordion music played.
“We were honored when the event planners called to invite Hays to participate, and we were more than happy to make the trip to showcase all that Hays has to offer visitors,” said Dixon.
The Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau is located in the Hays Welcome Center at 2700 Vine Street. For additional information about the CVB or community events, call 785-628-8202 or go to www.visithays.com.
