Although one man said his wife had to remind him, the east Hays residents who now have a new polling location seem to be finding it today with no trouble.

Those voters in the 4th Ward, Precincts 1, 3 and 5 now go to the Hays Recreation Commission after the recent closing of the former American Legion. Both locations are on Canterbury Street, just a couple of blocks apart.

Poll worker Marcy McClelland, who is also an Ellis County Commissioner, says people were waiting in their vehicles for the HRC doors to open at 7 a.m.

A reminder sign was placed at the former American Legion directing voters to the HRC.

“Everything is going very well. I don’t believe too many people have had trouble finding us, which we were concerned with,” McClelland said.

“We’ve had not an overwhelming amount but it’s been steady.”

No one Hays Post talked to was willing to discuss their vote on the $78.5 million bond issue for Hays USD 489. Most of those in the informal exit poll said “it will be interesting.”

Hays residents are also electing three school board members and three city commissioners.

The polls are open in Ellis County until 7 p.m. Be sure to check back with Hays Post tonight for local election results.
