The Hays High Indians opened the season hosting the Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout on Thursday against Olathe North.
Girls
Hays 51 – Olathe North 30
Hays jumped out to a 11-2 lead, scoring two field goals in the first 19 seconds of the first quarter. The closest Olathe North would get in the first frame was at 4-2. The Indians continued to build the lead throughout the first quarter leading 22-6 at the close of first eight minutes.
Hays had their lead at 20 on two occasions in the second quarter and led 33-16 at half time.
Girls Highlights
Neither team could find a rhythm in the third quarter. Hays outscored Olathe North 6-4 over the eight minutes to increase their lead to 39-20.
Hays cruised on to a 51-30 victory over Olathe North to move onto the semi-finals to face Great Bend. The Indians got a game high 19 from Savannah Schneider and 11 out of Brooke Denning.

Hays improves to 1-0 on the season. Olathe North is now 0-1. Hays will face Great Bend in the semi-finals of the tournament at 6:30 at Hays High School
Boys
Olathe North 93 – Hays 76
Both Hays and Olathe North came out willing to fire away on the offensive side. The two teams combined for 77 shots in the 40-32 lead for Olathe North at half time. The Eagles jumped out to an 8-2 lead only to see Hays score six straight to tie the game. Olathe North then embarked on a 16-4 run into the second quarter that put their lead at 24-12. The Indians would fall behind by as many as 17 before hitting three straight threes at the end of the first half for a 9-0 run and a 40-32 deficit.
Boys Highlights
Ethan Nunnery hit a three pointer to open the second half and cut the lead down to 40-35 in favor of Olathe North. The Eagles then went on a 11-0 run, then backed that up with a 14-0 run after Hays got with in ten. The Indians were down 70-46 after three quarters and fall 93-76.
Ethan Nunnery led the way for Hays with 18. Cole Murphy added 14, Peyton Kieffer and Tradgon McCrae each scored 11. Tymer Jackson led four Eagles in double figures with 26 points. The two teams combined for 149 shots in the game.

Hays drops 0-1 on the season and will play Life Preparatory in the consolation semi-finals at 8:15 at the Hays Middle School. Olathe North starts the year at 1-0.
