HAYS, Kan-St. Thomas Aquinas went on a 10-0 run and didn’t look back as they defeated TMP 65-38 in the opening round of the Hays City Shootout. The Saints would lead 21-8 after the first quarter and 40-16 at the half. The second half was much of the same as Aquinas proved to be too much and picked up the 27 point win.
TMP was led by Trenton May who came off the bench to score 10, Michael Lager 8 and Creighton Renz 6. TMP drops to 0-1 on the season and will face William Chrisman out of Independence, Missouri at 4:45 Friday afternoon at Hays Middle School.
The Aquinas girls are the two time defending 5A State Champions and showed their muscle on the floor as they defeated TMP 43-30 . Aquinas started the game on an 8-0 run. The Lady Monarchs answered with a 6-2 run to end the quarter and trailed 10-6.
The two teams would battle in the second quarter as TMP would get as close as three points before the Lady Saints pushed it back to seven points. The Lady Monarchs would not go away as the closed the half on a quick 4-2 run and trailed 21-16 at half. Kayla Vitztum led both teams in scoring with 10 points at the break.
It was a back and forth battle in the third quarter. TMP was able to tie the game at 25 points late in the third quarter and that’s when the game got away from the Lady Monarchs. Aquinas went on a 12-0 run into the fourth quarter to take a commanding 37-25 lead and went on to win 43-30. TMP was led by Vitztum who finished with a game high 17 points. Molly Harnett lead St. Thomas Aquinas with 12.
TMP falls to 0-1 on the year and will play William Chrisman at 3:00pm Friday afternoon at Hays Middle School.
