KANSAS CITY — The University of Kansas Medical Center Area Health Education Center (AHEC) held its annual Women in Health Care: The Next Generation event on Nov. 1-3, 2017 on the campus of KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. This year, 16 participants were chosen from more than 30 applications from female high school students across Kansas, who all have health-related career aspirations.

The following students were chosen to take part in the annual Women in Health Care: The Next Generation program:
· Brianna Romme – Thomas More Prep-Marian High School (Hays, Kan.)
· Emma Bigham – Herington High School (Herington, Kan.)
· Mariah Wells – Lyndon High School (Lyndon, Kan.)
· Olivia Link – Burlington High School (Burlington, Kan.)
· Nia Hughes – Lawrence Free State High School (Lawrence, Kan.)
· Brenna Flax – Trego Community High School (WaKeeney, Kan.)
· Ashley Prentice and Hailey LaPlant – Augusta High School (Augusta, Kan.)
· Makaiya Russell – Hesston High School (Hesston, Kan.)

· Melanie Casanova and Alexa Reyes – Dodge City High School (Dodge City, Kan.)
· Emma Strobel – Pratt High School (Pratt, Kan.)

The three-day event provided students with the opportunity to explore the world of medicine and health care and interact with health professions students and faculty at KU Medical Center. The group attended a variety of labs at KU Medical Center including the orthopedics research lab, the nursing simulation lab, the Hoglund Brain Imaging Center, and more.

This program is designed to encourage women to become leaders in health care, said Mary Beth Warren, director of the AHEC.

“With so few health care providers in most parts of the state, this program is a unique opportunity for young women to interface with a concentrated group of leaders and role models, many of whom are women,” Warren said. “Through this event, we also want to inspire the best and the brightest to excel in whatever health field they eventually choose.”

Women in Health Care: The Next Generation is an annual competitive program. More than 30 high school junior and senior women from across the state applied to take part in this year’s program, which included writing an essay demonstrating strong interests in health care careers and getting teacher recommendations.

No. 6 Wichita State rallies past South Dakota State

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Landry Shamet had 21 points and eight assists, Shaquille Morris added 20 points and No. 6 Wichita State rallied to beat scrappy, hot-shooting South Dakota State 95-85 on Tuesday night.

Conner Frankamp added 16 points, setting the school record by hitting a 3 in his 30th straight game, and the Shockers (7-1) slowly dug out of a 13-point second-half hole to beat the Jackrabbits (7-4) for their 23rd consecutive victory at Koch Arena.

Mike Daum hit seven 3-pointers and poured in 31 points for South Dakota State, wowing a number of pro scouts who turned out for the game. But he got into foul trouble and cooled off down the stretch, and the Jackrabbits couldn’t find enough offense from anybody else to hang with the Shockers.

Darral Willis Jr. had 13 points and Zach Brown had 10 for Wichita State. Tevin King scored 14 points for South Dakota State before fouling out in the final minutes.

The game was knotted 27-all midway through the first half when Daum hit one of his four first-half 3-pointers. That began a run over the next 5 minutes that pushed the Jackrabbits’ lead to 39-30, and silenced another crowd packed to the rafters of Koch Arena.

Daum wound up scoring 16 points in the first half, and the Jackrabbits – who were trounced just up the road by No. 2 Kansas a couple of weeks ago – shot 63 percent from the field in the first half.

South Dakota State twice pushed its advantage to 13 points early in the second half before Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall finally began slapping on a full-court press.

It was a big improvement over their leaky half-court defense.

The press cooled South Dakota State offensively, and the Shockers slowly chipped away at their deficit. Frankamp made three free throws, Morris knocked down a 3 and Rashard Kelly threw down a dunk to make it 76-all – the first time it was tied since the 9:09 mark of the first half.

Daum set an illegal screen to earn his fourth foul and a spot on the bench with 5:53 left, and back-to-back-to-back baskets by Morris in the paint made it 89-81 with 2:26 to go.

The Shockers were never threatened again.

BIG PICTURE

South Dakota State was fifth nationally in made 3-pointers entering the game, but the Shockers evidently forgot that part of the scouting report. They allowed the Jackrabbits to go 14 for 29 from beyond the arc, and that long-range shooting was nearly enough to spring the upset.

Wichita State proved it could beat an NCAA Tournament-caliber opponent on an off night, and that should bode well the rest of the season. The performance also gave Marshall plenty of teaching moments, especially on the defensive end, where lapses throughout the game nearly cost his team.

2 Men in Kansas Indicted on Charges Of Lying to Become Naturalized Citizens

WICHITA, KAN. – Two men who been living in Kansas were indicted today in separate cases on charges of lying in order to become naturalized citizens, according to U.S. Attorney Tom Beall.

Victor David Garcia Bebek, 45, a native of Peru who has been living in Wichita, was charged with one count of unlawfully obtaining naturalized U.S. citizenship. The indictment alleges Bebek failed to disclose on his application for naturalization that he committed crimes while in the United States, including voter fraud.

In April, Bebek pleaded guilty in Sedgwick County District Court to three counts of voting without being qualified. He voted in a 2012 special election, the 2012 general election, and the 2014 general election, according to Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. Kobach said his office learned of the voting fraud after Bebek became a naturalized citizen in February 2017.

Terry Kang, 48, a native of India who has been living in Overland Park, is charged with one count of unlawfully obtaining naturalized U.S. citizenship. The indictment alleges he failed to disclose on his application for naturalization that the government previously had initiated proceedings to remove him from the United States. In addition, the indictment alleges he made false statements to the government.

Kansas State eases past SC Upstate

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Kamau Stokes scored 17 points with five 3-pointers and Kansas State cruised past SC Upstate 86-49 on Tuesday night.

Barry Brown scored 15 points with four assists, Dean Wade added 13 points with seven rebounds, and the Wildcats (8-1) made 12 3-pointers and shot 50.8 percent from the floor.

Stokes hit two 3s in Kansas State’s opening 24-2 run and the Wildcats at one point shot 88 percent from the field to the Spartans’ 14 percent.

Kansas State outrebounded the Spartans 35-25 and used their length and strong defensive play to take the Spartans out of their rhythm. The Spartans managed to get their offense going late in the first half but they trailed 43-23 at halftime.

Malik Moore scored 16 points and Carson Smith had 11 for the Spartans (3-8), who shot 36.5 percent from the floor and made just three free throws

BIG PICTURE

In a game that easily could’ve been a trap game for Kansas State, coming off of a close win on the road at Vanderbilt, the Wildcats came out hot while Upstate struggled to get in gear. Kansas State continues to gather momentum despite the caliber of opponent. Games against Tulsa and Washington State will give the Wildcats a healthy test before they open up Big 12 play.

FHSU’s Ball named MIAA Co-Wrestler of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State sophomore Brandon Ball was named MIAA Co-Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday (Dec. 5) for his efforts this past week in the conference dual against Central Oklahoma and his performance in the Bob Smith Open. He shares the honor this week with Noel Torres of Newman.

Ranked third in the nation at 141 pounds, Brandon Ball turned in a runner-up finish at the FHSU-Bob Smith Open, but took the nation’s top ranked Division I wrestler the distance in a tight match for the championship. Ball blazed his way to the semifinals with an 8-0 major decision and 10-5 decision before taking on highly touted wrestlers in his final two matches. In the semifinals, he held on for a 6-5 win over Oklahoma State’s Michael Megaldo to get the opportunity to face the top ranked wrestler in Division I, Dean Heil from Oklahoma State. Heil, the two-time defending national champion at 141 pounds, had to hold on for a tight 5-3 win over Ball in the championship. Ball had control of Heil at the end of the match, but was unable to roll him to his back on several attempts in the closing seconds in an effort to tie the match. Heil extended his overall win streak to 54 matches, while Ball took his first loss of the season and now sits at 13-1 overall. Oklahoma State currently ranks No. 3 in NCAA Division I as a team. Ball faced three Division I wrestlers in the tournament and his first opponent was from Division II affiliate Adams State. Ball also defeated Rio Zamora with a 7-0 decision in the dual against the Bronchos on Friday (Dec. 1).

Torres took home the individual title in the FHSU-Bob Smith Open in the 184-pound weight class after pinning his first two opponents and then defeating conference foe Joel Dixon of Central Oklahoma to advance to the semifinals. Torres defeated Keegan Moore of Oklahoma State with an 8-3 decision and Heath Gray of UCO with a 6-2 decision. Noel Torres has put together a solid 10-0 start to his redshirt-senior campaign.
