Shepherd and Talley earn All-America honors from D2Football.com

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State had two players named to the D2Football.com All-America Team for the 2017 season. Senior defensive lineman Nathan Shepherd earned first team honors on defense, while senior offensive lineman Travis Talley earned honorable mention status.

This is the third All-America honor for Shepherd this season after garnering first team honors from the AFCA and second team honors from the Associated Press. Shepherd was the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year. Shepherd finished the year with 38 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and four sacks. In his three years at Fort Hays State, Shepherd amassed 168 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, and 10 sacks. He is an All-America selection for the second straight year after earning an honorable mention nod from the Don Hansen Football Committee last year. He is a three-time All-MIAA selection, earning first team this year, second team in 2016, and third team in 2015. He tied as the top vote receiver in NCAA Division II for the Cliff Harris Award, presented to the nation’s top small college defensive player representing almost 500 colleges and universities from NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA colleges.

Shepherd will compete in two prestigious all-star games in January. He will participate in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, played at the historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, on January 20. That game will air nationally on Fox Sports 1. A week later on January 27, he will participate in the Reese’s Senior Bowl, held in Mobile, Alabama. That game will air on NFL Network.

Talley adds this honor to his D2CCA All-Super Region 3 First Team selection and All-MIAA selection. He helped the Tiger offense average 257.3 passing yards per game and 184.2 rushing yards per game. Talley was also an All-MIAA First Team selection. Hansen Foundation helps provide HaysMed cath labs with new technology

HaysMed

The Dane G. Hansen Foundation has approved a grant of $250,000 in support of new technology for the two heart catheterization labs (cath labs) at HaysMed’s DeBakey Heart Institute.

The primary objective of new equipment is to serve the cardiac health needs and improve cardiac patient outcomes of our residents and visitors to western Kansas. Clinical advantages of the new equipment include the ability to see more detail while minimizing risk to
the patient through the use of higher resolution viewing equipment using less contrast. The newly outfitted labs also improve the safety and working conditions of our providers and patients through significant reductions in radiation exposure. More than 4,000 heart cath procedures have been completed by HaysMed’s team of interventional cardiologists in the last five years.

“HaysMed is proud to partner with the Dane G. Hansen Foundation in improving healthcare outcomes for the citizens of western Kansas. As a certified chest pain center, the DeBakey Heart Institute at HaysMed provides the people, the technology, and the facilities to allow folks to get quality cardiac care normally only available much further from home,” said HaysMed CEO Eddie Herrman.

HaysMed remains the only health care facility in the region having achieved American College of Cardiology (ACC) Chest Pain Center Accreditation.

As with hospitals nationwide, HaysMed is faced with decreasing revenues in government and insurance reimbursement. Philanthropic support is critical.

The Dane G. Hansen Foundation is committed to providing opportunities for the people of northwest Kansas to enjoy the highest possible quality of life through philanthropic support through a variety of areas, including healthcare. Over the past ten years, Dane G. Hansen Foundation Grants to the HaysMed Foundation have provided more than $1.25 million in support for projects benefiting the
healthcare of families in western Kansas, including a $500,000 grant in 2016 towards the new CT scanner at HaysMed.

About the DeBakey Heart Institute at HaysMed
Hays Medical Center has a full service heart program developed under the guiding hand of the Father of Heart Surgery, Dr. Michael DeBakey. The program includes two full time catheterization labs, interventional cardiology, nuclear cardiology, open heart surgery and cardiac rehabilitation. The heart program at HaysMed is committed to including referring physicians in the decision making process and keeping them updated on patient status. Priority is given to returning patients promptly to their local community hospitals and health care providers.

About the HaysMed Foundation
The HaysMed Foundation is a qualified 501(c) (3) charitable organization whose mission is to support HaysMed, a private, not-for-profit hospital that provides the only tertiary level services in the region. The Foundation, in partnership with donors, seeks to meet both immediate and long-range health care needs of the people of western Kansas. An 18-member volunteer board guides the efforts of the Foundation. Donations can be sent to the HaysMed Foundation, 2220 Canterbury Drive, Hays, KS 67601 or by visiting www.haysmedfoundation.org/donate.

Suspect in deadly Kansas 911 hoax wanted for similar calls in Canada

Barriss- photo courtesy Glendale, Calif. police

CALGARY, ALBERTA — A Los Angeles man suspected of making a hoax emergency call that led to the December 27,  fatal police shooting of a Kansas man is now wanted in Canada for a similar swatting call.

On Tuesday, the Calgary Alberta police reported their Cyber/Forensics Unit had issued warrants for the arrest of 25-year-old Tyler Barris of Los Angeles following a swatting incident last month, according to a media release.

Just before 8p.m. on Friday, Dec. 22, Calgary 911 received a call from a man who claimed he had shot his father and was holding his mom and younger brother hostage. The caller provided information leading officers to believe that the incident occurred at an address located in the 2300 block of 17b Street S.W. in Calgary, according to a media release from police.

Officers from patrol and the Tactical Unit quickly attended the residence, contained the scene, and began evacuating nearby units.

While officers were on scene trying to confirm the reported information, Calgary 911 received another call from a woman who lived at the address, who believed she was the victim of a swatting call. The woman exited her residence and officers confirmed that the initial report of a shooting and hostage scenario was false. During this incident, a substantial amount of police resources were required to contain the scene and protect the safety of citizens.

It is believed that the woman victim was targeted because of her online persona.

Following the incident, the investigation was handed over to members of the CPS Cyber/Forensics Unit. Investigators quickly identified a suspect who had made contact online with the victim earlier that day. It is believed this same suspect was involved in similar swatting calls in other jurisdictions.

Warrants were issued for Barriss that  include one count each of Public Mischief – falsely reporting that an offence has been committed, Fraud – false information by letter or telecommunication and Mischief

Barriss told a California judge at an extradition hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court last week that he would not fight efforts to send him to Wichita to face charges in the swatting case
