Hays Area Children’s Center seeking executive director

The Hays Area Children’s Center, Inc. (HACC) seeks an individual to oversee all programs of the agency, including an 82-child licensed child care center, Infant/Toddler Early Intervention services, Special Health Care Needs program, and Healthy Start Home Visitor services.
Applicants must be licensed as a Director of Special Education or Special Education
Supervisor/Coordinator with District Leadership (Pre K-12). A minimum of two years’ experience with Part C services is required; Early Childhood endorsement preferred. The selected candidate will oversee personnel, financial, licensure, and collaboration with community partners. Volunteers from Missouri join search for missing Kan. boy

SEDGWICK COUNTY — The search for a missing Kansas boy is now its third week. On Sunday, volunteers with from Missing and Endangered from Northwest Missouri searched Chisholm Park in Wichita for 5-year-old Lucas Hernandez, according to the organization’s social media page.

On Saturday, members of the volunteer horse mounted search and recovery team Texas EquuSearch joined in the search for Lucas, according to  their web site.

Lucas was last seen in Wichita, on February 17th 2018. Lucas was wearing a gray t-shirt with a bear on it, black sweat pants and socks. Lucas is missing his top / front teeth, and he has silver caps on his remaining teeth. He also has a small scar on his upper / left abdomen from a prior medical procedure. Allen Street reconstruction starts today

Please be advised that beginning Monday, March 5, 2018 the reconstruction of Allen Street will begin in Hays.

Allen Street will be closed from Vine Street south to the north side of 22nd Street Intersection leaving east and west bound lanes open to traffic.

This phase of construction will include waterline replacement and is scheduled to last until May 4, 2018 (pending weather conditions). The entire project should be complete by November 16, 2018.

Signs will be in place to direct the traveling public. Motorists should use caution in these areas.

2 hospitalized, 1 critical after Kansas house fire

SHAWNEE COUNTY. –Two people were injured in a fire Sunday in Shawnee County. Just before 8a.m., fire crews responded to a structure fire located at 1021 NE Jefferson Street in Topeka, according to a media release.

Upon arrival, fire crews found heavy fire coming the first floor of the dwelling.  One occupant of the structure was able to be rescued from the interior by a roommate, prior to Fire Department arrival.

This occupant sustained life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The other occupant was also transported for evaluation of smoke inhalation injuries.

The fire was extinguished keeping it contained to the structure of fire origin, but not before the dwelling sustained substantial damage. Cause of the fire remains under investigation but more likely than not accidental associated with a failure/malfunction of a wood burning stove, according to investigators.

The Estimated dollar loss – $5,600 to the structure and $1,000 to contents.The did have working smoke alarms.

Authorities did not release names of the victims.

Going Dancing: Tiger women earn spot in NCAA DII Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS – For the fourth time in program history, the Fort Hays State women’s basketball team heard its name called in the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship Selection Show on Sunday (March 4). The sixth-seeded Tigers will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. next weekend where they will take on No. 3 Southwestern Oklahoma State on Friday (March 9). Game times are to be announced.

This will be the Tigers’ third trip to the dance in the last four years. Fort Hays State earned the No. 1 seed and hosted the regional in 2015 before playing as the No. 5 seed in the 2016 tournament. The program’s other trip to the NCAA postseason came in 2005.

Fort Hays State earned an at-large bid into the Central Region Tournament after compiling a record of 25-6 so far this season. They are one of three schools representing the MIAA, with regular season champion Central Missouri earning the No. 2 seed and tournament champion Lindenwood securing the No. 8 seed. The NSIC also placed three teams in the tournament, while two teams from the GAC will head to Sioux Falls.

The winners in Friday’s four quarterfinal contests will advance to the semifinals on Saturday (March 10) before the regional championship is decided on Monday evening (March 12).

This year’s central regional will be held inside the Elmen Center on the campus of Augustana University, the top seed in the region.

The Tigers are 2-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, with both wins coming in 2015 when FHSU hosted the central region tournament. FHSU is 2-2 in the tournament under head coach Tony Hobson.

Fort Hays State is 3-0 all-time against Southwestern Oklahoma State, with the most recent meeting coming in the 1991 NAIA Championship Game.

Kansas alleged hate crime killer has plea hearing

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — A man accused in a possible hate crime shooting in suburban Kansas City is scheduled to appear in court for a plea hearing.

Fifty-two-year-old Adam Purinton, of Olathe, Kansas, is charged with killing an Indian national and wounding two other men in a February 2017 shooting at Austin’s Bar and Grill in Olathe. Witnesses said Purinton, who is white, yelled racial slurs before he fatally shot Srinivas Kuchibhotla and wounded Alok Madasani. A third man, Ian Grillot, was injured by gunfire when he tried to intervene.

Kuchibhotla and Madasani were engineers at GPS-maker Garmin.

After the shooting, Purinton drove to a restaurant in Clinton, Missouri, where a bartender called police after Purinton allegedly told him about the shooting.

Purinton also faces federal hate crime charges.

USGS: 3 Oklahoma earthquakes shake Kansas

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A pair of Sunday earthquakes shook residents in Kansas. The quakes centered northeast of Enid, Oklahoma measured a magnitude 4.2, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The first hit at 5:17 p.m. followed by another at 9:40 p.m. The region reported a 2. 7 magnitude quake early Monday.

Residents from Dodge City to Topeka reported feeling the quakes. There have no reports of damage or injury.

Search continues for suspect who dragged Kan. officer with car

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating an assault on a law enforcement officer.

Just after 9p.m. Saturday, two police officers stopped a 1996 Acura Integra in the 1400 Block of South Wichita Street in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

The car was occupied a male driver and 24-year-old female passenger. During the stop a struggle ensued with the driver when officers attempted to take him into custody.

The suspect was able to get the car in gear and accelerate southbound with one of the officers clinging to the vehicle with the door open.

The vehicle then struck two parked cars in a driveway, according to Davidson.

The officer was able to pull himself all the way into the car before the collision avoiding serious injury.

The male suspect fled through the sunroof of the vehicle.  The female was arrested and booked into jail for possession of drug paraphernalia and obstruction. The Officer sustained only minor injuries.

Rep. Marshall joins NAFTA talks in Mexico City


MEXICO CITY -Congressional negotiators continue to discuss whether or not President Trump will withdraw the U.S. from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)

On Saturday, Kansas First District Congressman Roger Marshall joined other representatives in Mexico City discussing trade and the importance of preserving NAFTA with leaders from US, Canada, and Mexico, according to a social media report.

“As we all lay out our priorities, I am happy to be here representing the needs of my district and our producers, wrote Marshall.

Last week, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch of Utah said Congress will take action if Trump follow through on a threat to withdraw from NAFTA, according to a media release.

Kansas Rep. Lynn Jenkins used her face time with Trump last week to make the case of “the importance of access to global markets for agricultural producers in Kansas.”

Hatch said he believes Trump is only making the threat to put pressure on Mexico.

Central Kansas Credit Union to merge with CUA

WICHITA – Central Kansas Credit Union (CKCU) President, David Dick, has announced that Central Kansas Credit Union has signed an Intent-to-Merge agreement with Credit Union of America (CUA). CUA will be the surviving credit union.

The credit unions are performing required due diligence for the merger and memberships of both credit unions will vote on the merger before it can occur. Voting will conclude March 29, 2018. Pending a positive vote from both credit unions, the merger will be scheduled for completion on June 30, 2018.

“We are really excited about merging with CUA. They are a strong and growing credit union that will bring many innovative products and
services to our members. Keeping up with technology is always a challenge and CUA has proven they can handle that challenge. As a part of the merger our staff at both locations will be retained and be able to continue serving our members,” Dick said.

CUA CEO, Frank Shoffner said “CKCU is a well-run financial cooperative. A merger with them is an excellent opportunity for CUA to expand its services to the Hutchinson and Pratt communities. We’ll be able to serve existing CUA members in those markets, CKCU members, and new community members. Sheriff: Suspect in series of Kan. trailer thefts in custody

MONTGOMERY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating multiple reports of stolen trailers and equipment in southeast Kansas and have a suspect in custody.

After an investigation, authorities have recovered multiple trailers, hay trailers and heavy equipment reported stolen in Montgomery and Labette Counties in Kansas and in Kay and Washington Counties in Oklahoma, according to Sheriff Robert Dierks.

Deputies arrested Richard “Rick” Fontes of Caney, Kansas for possession of stolen property and booked him into the Montgomery County Jail. An additional trailer believed to be stolen was seized from vehicle repair shop operated by Fontes.

Sheriff Dierks stated his Deputies have been working hard trying to solve these thefts. He also reminded the public to write down VIN numbers and serial numbers to property. When possible take photos of your property and keep a detailed description. These small details can make identification of stolen property much easier.

Virginia ‘Jeanie’ Swift

Virginia “Jeanie” Swift, 93, Hays, died Friday, March 2, 2018 at her home.

She was born June 27, 1924 in Hays, one of thirteen children of Alois and Caroline (Befort) Engel. On December 20, 1941 she was united in marriage to Robert M. “Bob” Swift in Hays. He preceded her in death on October 21, 2005. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the VFW Auxiliary, and she was a former member and officer with the WBA, Womens Bowling Association. She was a meat wrapper at Dillons and U-Save grocery stores, was a cook and volunteer at the Hays VFW, and was a demo lady at Wal-Mart. Her hobbies included being an avid bowler, following the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs, and playing cards and bingo. She enjoyed playing softball in her youth, was very outgoing and loved people, was a woman of strong faith, and she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include her son; Robert “Bob” Swift and wife Sondra of Hays, two grandchildren; Shawn Swift of Hays and Stacy Hammeke and husband Joe of Hutchinson, four great grandchildren; Emily, Kaleb, Lucas, and Blake Hammeke, all of Hutchinson, a brother; Al Engel and wife Ann of McPherson, and a sister; Dorothy Bahl and husband Kerry of Pleasanton, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son; Gary Lee Swift, by six brothers; Eugene Engel, Julius “Lefty” Engel, Alvin “Whitey” Engel, Jacob “Jake” Engel, Victor “Vic” Engel, and Robert Engel, and by four sisters; Martina Engel, Bernice “Bea” Cochran, Irene Stafford, and Mary Agnes Wenrich.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street, with Fr. Leo Blasi officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 on Monday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Tuesday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street.

A VFW Auxiliary rosary will be at 6:00 pm followed by a vigil service at 6:30, both on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested in Jeanie’s memory to the Hays Community Assistance Center, in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com
