HAYS, Kan.-Another defensive battle ensued between Hays High and Liberal on the soccer pitch on Thursday evening in Hays. After battling to a 0-0, double overtime draw in Liberal on April 5th in Liberal the two teams were headed for the same fate Tuesday. Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, a half that the Lady Indians controlled the ball throughout.
The second half was much of the same. Hays High controlled the ball and had some shots on goal but couldn’t find a way to score. The game went to the first overtime and the Lady Indians had a few opportunities but their shots went just wide of the net.
As the Lady Indians gathered together before the second overtime they kept their energy high and positive and it paid off. Less then a minute into overtime number two Hays High’s Kallie Leiker let a shot fly from just outside the top of the box. When the play was over the ball was resting in the back of the net after it sailed over the outstretched fingertips of the Liberal goalie and the game was over with the Lady Indians picking up the 1-0 victory.
Hays is now 7-2-1 on the season and 4-0-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. They will travel to Great Bend on Monday to face the Lady Panthers.
