Cain homers in return to KC as Brewers beat Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Lorenzo Cain homered while reaching base four times in his return to Kauffman Stadium, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 on Tuesday night to open their two-game set.

Travis Shaw added a three-run homer for the Brewers, while Zach Davies (2-2) pitched six innings of four-hit ball. Ryan Braun had two hits, walked twice and drove in a run.

Matt Albers, Dan Jennings and Jeremy Jeffress combined for three scoreless innings of relief.

Salvador Perez homered for Kansas City in his return from the disabled list, and Alex Gordon doubled and scored in his return from the DL, giving the slumping Royals their only offense.

Ian Kennedy (1-3) left after allowing four runs over three shaky innings. He took a liner off his ankle in the third but finished the inning before leaving the game.

Cain walked and scored in the third and fifth before going deep off Burch Smith in the seventh. He also made a couple of nifty grabs in center field, that familiar patch of turf he presided over for seven seasons, and where he helped the Royals to two American League pennants and a World Series title.

Cain parlayed that success into an $80 million, five-year contract in free agency, returning to the club that drafted him in 2004 and eventually traded him to Kansas City in a deal for Zack Greinke.

He was certainly remembered fondly by the Royals faithful.

Cain got his first standing ovation when he sprinted onto the field for warmups, then got another one when he stepped to bat in the first inning. And when he lined his third homer of the year to right to lead off the seventh, the crowd gave him another round of applause.

Kennedy allowed six hits and a walk. He also failed to record a strikeout for the first time in 273 appearances, the second-longest active streak in the majors.

He had precautionary X-rays taken on his right foot that came back negative.

MO’ LO

Cain said he felt some butterflies driving up to the stadium, but they evaporated when he walked into the home clubhouse. He wound up spending almost two hours talking to his former teammates. “Just a lot of hugs. A lot of sharing stories,” Cain said. “A lot of good times.”

Attorneys for 37-year-old Therese Roever requested a mental evaluation for the Olathe woman. A judge reviewed the results before finding Friday that Roever is able to understand the proceedings and help her attorneys defend her in the attempted capital murder case.

Court documents say two of the children would have died if they hadn’t been found and rushed to a hospital. The records also show Roever and her ex-husband have been involved in long-running litigation involving domestic issues, including child custody.

In this superlative mystery/comedy, little toy soldiers on the mantel disappear one by one as those in the house succumb to a diabolical avenger. A nursery rhyme tells how each of the ten “soldiers” met his death until there were none. A mysterious voice accuses each guest of having gotten away with murder and then one drops dead – poisoned. One down and nine to go! For a well-brought-up English lady, Agatha Christie had some pretty dark ideas, gnarly notions which she let run wild in “And Then There Were None.”

Transgender Kansas teacher honored with award

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A transgender teacher in Kansas has been named “National Educator of the Year” by the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network.

Wichita North High School music teacher Stephanie Byers came out as a transgender woman in 2014.

Byers said she decided to come out as a transgender woman just five years shy of possible retirement, despite her fears about what it could mean for her and those around her.

“There was an urgency to it, and I could no longer put it off,” Byers said. “But there’s still the fear, because you never know.”

Byers said she didn’t transition to be a pioneer or an advocate, but that she’s become both.

The 55-year-old has in recent years met with school leaders, participated on panels about LGBTQ issues, talked with parents about gender identity, chaperoned a local “Day of Advocacy” and spoken at the state Capitol.

Byers said she’s received “absolutely amazing” support from Wichita district officials and from North High Principal Sherman Padgett.

“People that I have never spoken to in this building came up and wrapped their arms around me to tell me how much they care for me and love me and were proud of me,” Byers said. “It was very, very affirming.”

Padgett said he nominated Byers for the award because she’s “just an all-around great teacher and a great person.”

“It would be great if we could get to the point where we can normalize the LGBTQ community,” said Padgett. “She chose to live her true identity, and when that just becomes normal, that’s when kids will realize they belong here just as much as everyone else.”
