Valley Hope joins with Norton Co. partners to offer prescription drug disposal

NORTON — Kansans living in Norton County and surrounding areas now have a place to safely dispose of unused prescription drugs. Valley Hope is partnering with Moffet Drug Pharmacy, Norton Regional Health Foundation and Norton County Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs to offer a prescription drug disposal unit manufactured by MedSafe and available to the public.

Individuals can dispose of prescriptions at Moffet Drug, 102 S. State, Norton, normal business hours, which are 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Mondays-Fridays, and 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays.

“We have a ton of people that bring medicine in, and ask us how to dispose of it,” said Abby Rice, owner of Moffet drug along with her husband, Chase Rice. “Up until now, there was really only one day a year to get rid of prescriptions. The need is great, and hopefully this provides a safe way to dispose of unneeded or unwanted prescriptions.”

The disposal unit is certified by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Once the unit is full, the prescriptions are taken by MedSafe and incinerated.

“We know that too many unused prescriptions end up in the wrong hands, which contributes to drug abuse and addiction,” said Valley Hope President and CEO Pat George. “Whether that someone is using another family member’s prescription without permission or someone stealing prescriptions to sell on the street, it’s better for everyone if any unused or unneeded prescriptions are dispose of quickly. This gives people a way to do that safely.”

The unit can take prescriptions but not needles or other sharps, Rice said. Glass vials containing insulin are accepted for disposal. For questions about disposing of prescriptions or using the disposal site, call Moffet Drug at (785) 877-2721.

4th annual toy show to be held at National Guard Armory

By JAYLINN PFEIFER
Hays Post

The fourth annual toy show will be hosted at the National Guard Armory, 200 Main, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $3 and free for children 10 years and younger.

The event is a big family event designed to get the hobby of collecting toys back into style, said an organizer. The older generation is retiring and the younger generation is focused more on their cellphones, which enticed Mark Wendelburg to hold the event.

Wendelburg has grown up around these collectibles his entire life.

“It is nice for people to hunt for something or just something they don’t have in their personal collection,” he said.

Others helping with the organization of the event are Clint Straub and John Kreutzer. Vendors at the event will be selling collectible sports cards, NASCAR, farm tractors, toy cars, dolls, DCP trucks, trains, models, cast iron, action figures and more.

“I’ve been going to toy collector shows since I was 4 and, it’s just a great time to enjoy with family and share the experience with fellow collectors,” Wendelburg said.
For more information about the event, visit the Facebook page, Hays Toy Show, or email [email protected].

“My favorite part about the event is just the neat stories you get to hear about the different collectibles and the expressions on the adults and even the kids’ faces,” Wendelburg said.

Kansas school resource officer charged with fondling teens

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Wyandotte County prosecutors say a Kansas City, Kansas, school resource officer is charged with fondling at least three teenagers.

District Attorney Mark Dupree said Thursday that 57-year-old Michael Eugene English Sr. was charged Thursday with three counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

Dupree says a parent contacted police in March and three victims have come forward. The three alleged victims were between 14 and 16.

English has been employed with the school district since 2015. He has been on administrative leave since March 22.

Dupree said investigators are still trying to determine if the alleged crimes occurred on school property.

Kan. man acquitted in shooting death of best friend

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Topeka man has been acquitted of first-degree murder in the shooting death of his best friend.

A Shawnee County jury on Thursday found 19-year-old Ernest Williams not guilty in Justice Mitchell’s death.

Mitchell died June 26 after being shot during an attempted robbery.

Investigators say Mitchell and Williams met 17-year-old Shayden Byrd and Lamero Dunstan at a Topeka fast-food restaurant for a drug deal.

Testimony indicated Dunstan pulled a gun and shot Mitchell twice. Williams also drew a gun but didn’t fire it.

Prosecutors contended Williams was guilty of murder because the death happened during a dangerous felony.

Byrd was sentenced to five years in a juvenile facility after pleading guilty to first-degree murder. Dunstan faces trial in August on first-degree murder and attempted aggravated robbery charges.

Kan. officers prep for 4/20: Driving high? Kiss your license goodbye!

KDOT

Kansas City, KS – The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), the Kansas Highway Patrol and local law enforcement partnered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to announce a tough new drug-impaired driving enforcement campaign—Driving High? Kiss Your License Goodbye!. The event took place on 4/20 – a date associated with cannabis culture.“Operating a motor vehicle while impaired not only impacts the driver and passengers of the vehicle, but everyone else on the road,” said Chris Bortz, KDOT Traffic Safety Program Manager.  “Impaired driving is not a victimless crime.”The perception that driving while high does not adversely affect driving ability is a myth.  It has been proven that THC – the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects – slows reaction times, impairs cognitive performance and makes it difficult for drivers to keep a steady position in their lane.

“Our goal is to save lives and we’re putting all drivers on alert – Drug impaired driving is against the law,” said Colonel Mark Bruce, Kansas Highway Patrol.  “In support of the education efforts targeting the drug impaired driver, the Highway Patrol and local law enforcement will deploy additional officers focused on identifying and removing the impaired driver.”

The bottom line is this: It doesn’t matter what term is used, if a person is high, stoned, wasted or drunk, he or she is impaired. Driving while impaired by any substance is illegal and can be deadly to the driver and all other road users.

Hays High Soccer dumps Liberal in 2OT

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

HAYS, Kan.-Another defensive battle ensued between Hays High and Liberal on the soccer pitch on Thursday evening in Hays. After battling to a 0-0, double overtime draw in Liberal on April 5th in Liberal the two teams were headed for the same fate Tuesday. Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, a half that the Lady Indians controlled the ball throughout.

The second half was much of the same. Hays High controlled the ball and had some shots on goal but couldn’t find a way to score. The game went to the first overtime and the Lady Indians had a few opportunities but their shots went just wide of the net.

As the Lady Indians gathered together before the second overtime they kept their energy high and positive and it paid off. Less then a minute into overtime number two Hays High’s Kallie Leiker let a shot fly from just outside the top of the box. When the play was over the ball was resting in the back of the net after it sailed over the outstretched fingertips of the Liberal goalie and the game was over with the Lady Indians picking up the 1-0 victory.

Hays is now 7-2-1 on the season and 4-0-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. They will travel to Great Bend on Monday to face the Lady Panthers.
