Ohtani’s 3-run triple leads Angels to win over Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Shohei Ohtani hit a bases-loaded triple in a five-run seventh inning to help the streaking Los Angeles Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 7-1 on Thursday night for their fifth straight victory.

Ian Kinsler homered on his first swing in his return to the Angels’ lineup, and Nick Tropeano (1-0) pitched shutout ball into the seventh for his first major league win since 2016.

Los Angeles has won eight of nine.

Ohtani drove a 1-2 pitch from Brandon Maurer to right-center, scoring Kole Calhoun, Andrelton Simmons and Luis Valbuena. The Royals walked Ohtani intentionally in the sixth with first base open and Simmons on second.

Ohtani is tied with Mike Trout for the Angels’ lead with 11 RBIs in 26 at-bats. Trout went 3 for 4 with his fifth home run and has 55 at-bats.

Kinsler led off the game with a home run for the 47th time in his career, driving a 1-0 pitch from Ian Kennedy (1-1) out to left. Kinsler missed the previous 11 games with an adductor strain.

Tropeano, making his first big league appearance since July 18, 2016, limited the Royals to six hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings. He had elbow surgery in August 2016 and missed last season.

Tropeano threw 88 pitches, struck out six and walked two.

Ian Kennedy was removed after six innings and 100 pitches. He allowed seven hits but just the one run on Kinsler’s homer.

The Royals, who have lost eight of 11, have scored a total of 32 runs – and 10 of those came in Monday’s victory over Seattle.

Lucas Duda singled home Mike Moustakas, who doubled, with two outs in the eighth for Kansas City.

LINEUP CHANGES

Royals DH Whit Merrifield hit fifth for the second time in his career. He batted second in the first 10 games of the season. “Whit has been a good table-setter, now let’s see if we can take him from a table-setter to a table-cleaner-upper,” manager Ned Yost said. Jorge Soler replaced Merrifield in the 2-hole and struck out four times. Merrifield went 0 for 4 and stranded three runners. . Angels INF Zack Cozart, who had started the first 13 games, 12 at second base, was given the night off.

ROSTER MOVES

The Angels optioned RHP Jamie Barria, who won his big league debut on Wednesday at Texas, and INF Ryan Schimpf to Triple-A Salt Lake.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: OF Alex Gordon, on the disabled list with a left labrum tear, had 2009 surgery on a right labrum tear. He said this feels similar to 2009. “I feel like I’m a different stage of my career right now and surgery is the last thing I want to do right now,” said the 34-year-old five-time Gold Glove winner. He received a cortisone shot Monday and has been shut down since. “They’re pretty optimistic about it,” Gordon said. “The first thing they (the medical staff) said was, this doesn’t have to be surgery. You hear the labrum tear and you get down in the dumps. This is my last day of not doing anything. After today, I’ll have a lot better answers for you as far as how it feels and maybe the timetable upon the return.”

UP NEXT

Angels: LHP Andrew Heaney gets the ball Friday night in Kansas City, his first start of the year after beginning the season on the disabled list with elbow inflammation.

Royals: RHP Jason Hammel will try to build off Sunday’s strong outing. He threw six scoreless innings in a no-decision at Cleveland.

Tiger softball struggles to find key hits; falls twice to MWSU

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Fort Hays State dropped both games of a doubleheader at Missouri Western on Thursday (Apr. 12). The Tigers had a brief lead in the first game before the Griffons rallied for six unanswered runs in a 7-2 decision. In the nightcap, the Tigers could not find a timely hit in several run-scoring opportunities and fell 1-0.

Game 1: Missouri Western 7, Fort Hays State 2
Fort Hays State held a brief lead of 2-1 after a Bailey Boxberger 2-RBI double with the bases loaded in the top of the third inning. However, Missouri Western took the lead back in the bottom half of the third when Lonnie Groves hit a 2-out, 2-run home run. The Griffons pulled away steadily from that point and won by a final of 7-2.

The Griffons initially took the lead with a run in the second inning on a two-out RBI double before the Tigers scored their only runs in the third. The Griffons went on to plate runs in all of their turns at the plate except the first inning. A solo homer added a run in the fourth, an error and RBI single brought home runs in the fifth, and another error produced a run in the sixth.

Sierra Rodriguez threw 4.2 innings in the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on 11 hits with a strikeout. Megan Jamison relieved for a third of an inning. Hailey Chapman threw the final inning and allowed an unearned run, while yielding a walk.

Boxberger and Rodriguez each went 2-for-3 at the plate, both recording doubles in the game. Candace Bollig and Terran Caldwell scored the runs for FHSU in the second on Boxberger’s double.

Kenzie Hilzer tossed a complete game, allowing five hits and two walks, while striking out three. One of her two runs allowed were earned.

Game 2: Missouri Western 1, Fort Hays State 0
Fort Hays State had plenty of opportunities to tie or take a lead in the nightcap, but a single run by Missouri Western in the first inning held up. The Griffons took the game 1-0 to sweep the doubleheader.

With two outs in the first inning, Missouri Western used a double and a Lonnie Groves RBI single to generate its only run. From that point, Tiger pitcher Hailey Chapman held the Griffons to just two hits the rest of the way and just four overall for the game.

The Tigers outhit the Griffons 6-4 in the game, but had nothing to show for it in the run column. In the first inning, the Tigers had runners reach first and third with one out thanks to a Griffon error. However, immediately following, a pop up on the infield and a fly out to left field ended the threat. In the second inning, the Tigers had consecutive singles with one out to put runners at first and second, but a foul out and line out ended that threat.

The Tigers had another excellent opportunity in the fourth when they had a pair of singles to open the inning. However, the Tigers’ struggled to move runners again with a strikeout, interference on the next play by a runner, and then a groundout to end the inning.

In the fifth, the Tigers got a runner on with one out due to an error, but then grounded into a double play to end another threat. With one out in the sixth, Grace Philop doubled, moved to third on a fielder’s choice, but a groundout ended another chance at a run. FHSU went down in order in the seventh inning, suffering its 20th straight loss away from Hays.

Kaili Hinds scattered six hits to go with two strikeouts in her complete game win for the Griffons. Hailey Chapman took another tough-luck loss, allowing just one run on four hits with five strikeouts. Grace Philop was the lone Tiger with a pair of hits in the game, going 2-for-3 at the dish.

Fort Hays State remains two games back of eighth place in the MIAA standings after Nebraska-Kearney lost twice to Northwest Missouri State. Nebraska-Kearney, Emporia State, Lindenwood, and Missouri Southern are all four games under .500 in MIAA play.

Another schedule adjustment has been made for Friday’s doubleheader at Northwest Missouri State. The games will begin at 10 am in Maryville, Mo.

New Kan. website showing those owing back child support a success

TOPEKA —The Kansas Department of Children and Families launched a new web site in an effort to locate parents who are avoiding their court ordered obligation to pay child support. The program is already working. The site launched this week featured ten individuals who owe more than $5000 or more in support.

Bennett said there was reasonable concern at the time Andrew Finch may have been armed with a weapon.

The unarmed 28-year-old Wichita man was shot by police responding to a California man’s hoax call about a killing and kidnapping at Finch’s home.

Police have said Finch was told to keep his hands raised, but reached toward his waistline. An officer standing across the street shot him when he reached his hands up suddenly.

A media release from police following the DA’s announcement stated, “This incident has weighed on the hearts of the Wichita Police Department and community. Chief Gordon Ramsay and the WPD continue to extend sympathy to the Finch family and the officers involved.”

The shooting drew national attention to a practice called “swatting,” in which a person makes up a false report to get responders to descend on an address.

Wichita police are following these next steps regarding the incident, according to the media release.

An internal investigation will be conducted to determine if policies and training were followed, review of training and policies to include any recommendations, administrative review of the findings and internal actions taken based on the findings, Citizens Review Board (CRB) reviews the findings and provides policy and training recommendations, administrative review of CRB recommendations.

Police Chief Ramsay and WPD remain committed to completing an objective evaluation of this incident based upon the facts.

WPD officials work to stay abreast of developments in police policies and practices and strive to provide effective law enforcement to the community. WPD has implemented the deployment of body cameras to assist in documenting police actions, continues to explore and deploy nonlethal alternatives to lethal force and to adhere to other developments in law enforcement practices. The WPD recognizes the concern this tragedy has caused and is committed to do everything it can to prevent an incident like this from occurring again.

W. Kansas dairy wins EPA Pollution Prevention Award

Kansas Dairy Ingredients, Hugoton

EPA

LENEXA – Kansas Dairy Ingredients, a dairy production facility in Hugoton, Kansas, received the EPA Region 7 Pollution Prevention Award Wednesday during ceremonies at the Midwest Environmental Compliance Conference at the Kansas City Convention Center.

Kansas Dairy Ingredients incorporated a number of water conservation projects into its business operations, as part of the company’s sustainability initiatives.

The company manufactures concentrated milk through ultrafiltration. Water is extracted from the milk, cleaned and treated, and then reused to clean the facility or returned to local farms for crop irrigation. The reclaimed water reduces municipal water procurement and wastewater, saving more than 41 million gallons a year.

Local processing of the milk in southwest Kansas reduces the overall volume of milk that requires transportation, resulting in carbon dioxide emissions savings of more than 7 million kilograms of CO2 equivalents per year. This is equivalent to the CO2 emissions from 1,646 passenger vehicles driven for a year.

“The Pollution Prevention, or P2, awards program recognizes forward-thinking organizations that improve the environment and our quality of life,” said Jim Gulliford, EPA Region 7 Administrator. “There is ample evidence that even greater improvements in protecting the environment and public health are possible through voluntary, community and industry-based pollution prevention programs.”

P2 is a successful, non-regulatory approach to energy conservation, water conservation, reduction of toxic materials used, and money savings. This awards program is designed to further recognize P2 successes and encourage others to consider a P2 approach.

P2 also emphasizes the reduction of direct environmental impacts and the use of resources and materials.
