NEW ALBUM – LAST MAN STANDING – TO CELEBRATE 85TH BIRTHDAY

11 brand-new songs co-written with album producer, Buddy Cannon

Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment, has released “Last Man Standing,” Willie Nelson’s new studio album.

Arriving just in time for Willie’s 85th birthday (April 29), Last Man Standing is available on CD, 12″ vinyl LP and digital formats. The first single from the project is the title track from the album “Last Man Standing” and Willie shared a music video capturing the making of the track.

Last Man Standing, comprised entirely of songs newly-penned by Willie Nelson (and longtime collaborator and producer Buddy Cannon), is the worthy successor to Willie’s God’s Problem Child, which showcased seven Nelson-Cannon compositions and debuted at #1 on the Country charts. Willie and Buddy have been working together since 2008 with Cannon producing more than a dozen of Willie’s albums.

The songwriting duo deploys a unique strategy of shared composition, beginning with back-and-forth text messaging of lyrics with the melodies. On Last Man Standing, Nelson and Cannon’s unorthodox approach generated eleven original songs, “Willie’s a jazz singer and jazz player. He’s an improvisational musician. It’s different every time. Get a good take and go with it,” says Cannon,

With Last Man Standing, Nelson has added 11 essential new songs to his classic catalog. One of Willie’s most personal and introspective albums to-date, Last Man Standing reveals the emotional range of Willie’s concerns, from the deeply reflective (“Something You Get Through,” to the rollicking and playful (“Me and You,” “Ready to Roar”)

An album that acknowledges the transience of time while marveling at the joy, beauty and surprise the world has to offer, Last Man Standing finds Willie Nelson rolling at a creative peak, writing and singing and playing with the seasoned wit and wisdom that comes from the road.

🎥 Sternberg’s Discovery Room receives $10K donation from Hays McDonald’s

Gail Kuehl presents a $10,000 donation for the Sternberg Museum Children’s Discovery Room to director Dr. Reese Barrick in celebration of NorthHays McDonald’s 39th anniversary and remodel.

By BECKY KISER
Hays Post

McDonald’s of NorthHays, 3406 Vine, just celebrated its 39th anniversary and gave a gift to the Sternberg Museum of Natural History.

During a recent ribbon cutting ceremony to show off the restaurant’s newly remodeled interior and its new features, owners Gail and Rick Kuehl also honored Sternberg employees and Fort Hays State University with a $10,000 check to the Children’s Discovery Room.

“One of our belief systems when we first moved here was to give back to the communities because they come see us at McDonald’s and because we believe that’s important,” said Gail Kuehl.

“One of our favorite projects over the years, other than working with the schools, is the Sternberg Museum Discovery Room. When it first happened, McDonald’s was a big part of that and it’s always been pretty special to us.

“When we first opened the Discovery Room, (current museum director) Reese Barrick wasn’t here. But, (former director) Jerry Choate and I, and (former) Hays educators Nancy Harman and Nancy Talbott, along with a lot of other teachers, were on a committee to kind of design it and get it going. We wanted that educational piece.”

She presented an over-sized mock check to Barrick who was joined by Discovery Room manager Thea Boeckner.

After thanking the Kuehls, Barrick told the crowd Gail Kuehl was one of the first people he met when he came to Hays nine years ago. “She does love the children and the Discovery Room. Rick and Gail have been amazingly supportive since I’ve been here.”

Barrick noted the Sternberg Museum has been in its “new” location at 3000 Sternberg Drive nearly 20 years.

“This is the most timely thing,” Barrick said with a big smile on his face. “Thea and I along with the rest of my staff have actually just been talking about how we are ready to do some things to update the Discovery Room to make it special for kids and families in the years to come.”

Kids Café to be hosted by USD 489 through the summer

By JAYLINN PFEIFER
For Hays Post

Hays USD 489’s annual Kids Café will be from May 29 to Aug. 3. This program provides a free lunch for kids who are 18 and younger who would like to be in the summer food service program. The program has been going on for more than 20 years.

“We are excited because this year will be the first year for a new summer snack program at the library in the afternoons,” said Jessica Younker, Director of Nutrition Services at USD 489.

There is need for healthy foods when school is out, and the lunches allow the kids who are in the community to get out of the house, eat a well-balanced meal and socialize.

There are surveys taken at the end of the summer each year — 95 percent being very complimentary and requesting the program to return again the following year.

“I enjoy the fresh fruits and vegetables provided that I don’t always buy for myself at the store. I also enjoy seeing how pleased and thankful the kids and parents who attend the program are,” Younker said.

The program will be every weekday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Early Childhood Connection, 305 Main. The meals are free for students, but $3.75 for adults.
