Marilyn Joan Morissey

Marilyn Joan Morissey passed away Friday, June 22, 2018, at her home in Dighton, KS at the age of 88. She was born in Larned, KS on October 28, 1929 to Frank and Ruth (Smith) Slayton. She married Darrell Lee Morrissey on July 24, 1949 in Ulysses, KS. They were blessed with four children: Jeff, Patrick, Michael, and Pamela.

Marilyn graduated from Stafford High School. She then went on to Fort Hays State University obtaining her teaching certificate. She taught school in a one room schoolhouse south of Stockton and later obtained her bachelor’s degree. She also played drums in the marching band at FHSU. Marilyn was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church where she was a Eucharistic Minister, member of the Altar Society, and song leader. She belonged to the ladies golf group at Cedar Links Golf Club and the Northwest Kansas Stroke Support Group in Hays. Marilyn enjoyed keeping up with technology. She spent a lot of time working on her computer. She also enjoyed playing the accordion and piano, traveling, and riding her motorcycle which she was proud of being able to do on her own.

Marilyn is survived by her sons Jeff Morrissey and wife Lori of Manhattan, KS, Patrick Morrissey of Edmond, OK, and Michael Morrissey and wife Sheila of Pace, FL; daughter Pamela Davis of LaCrosse, KS; sister-in-law Teddy Slayton of Wichita, KS; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Ruth Slayton; husband Darrell; infant daughter; and brother Gerald Slayton.

Marilyn was greatly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. We take comfort knowing that like a caterpillar who continually labors, her life and work on earth is finished, but by the grace of God, her spirit now flies forever with her Lord like a butterfly.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Stockton, KS. Visitation will be Monday, 3:00-8:00 P.M. at the funeral home with a vigil service at 6:00 P.M. Memorials are suggested to St. Thomas Altar Society or Northwest Kansas Stroke Support Group-Hays and can be sent in care of Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, 723 N 1st, Stockton, KS 67669.
