Law enforcement officials in Ellis County are investigating a pair of incidents where someone threw an object from one vehicle and caused damage to another vehicle.

According to Lt. Brandon Wright with the Hays Police Department, the first incident was reported just after 10:30 p.m. May 30 in the area of 41st and Autumn Lane.

Wright said a Jeep Liberty was traveling westbound on 41st when a vehicle traveling in the other direction threw an object out the window. That object struck the windshield of the Jeep causing it to shatter.

The second incident was reported just before 10 p.m. June 4 in the 200 block of West 41st.

According to Wright, a Toyota Scion was traveling eastbound on 41st when someone in an oncoming vehicle threw something out the window. The object struck the windshield of the Scion causing it to shatter.

Wright said because that incident happened outside the city limits of Hays the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department conducted the investigation. The HPD assisted with the search for the suspect’s vehicle.

In both incidents, the victim’s vehicle was reportedly wet after being hit by the object but no debris was found at either scene, according to Wright, which suggested the objects could be water balloons.

The vehicle involved in both cases is described as an older model pickup that is brown in color or two-toned with brown on it, according to Wright.

“This is a very dangerous situation,” said Wright. “Windows being broken out are a showering the occupants with glass inside the vehicles.”

They are asking the public’s help in identifying the person or persons involved in these incidents.

“If they see a vehicle like that, report the location and, if they can get a tag number, that would be good as well,” said Wright.

The Hays Police Department can be contacted at (785) 625-1030.

Richard Armenta, 57, Overland Park, Kan., pleaded guilty to a Nov. 24, 2017, robbery at Capital Federal Savings Bank, 9001 E. Santa Fe in Overland Park. Armenta left the bank with cash, but investigators had two clues: the tattoo on his left hand and the blue bicycle he rode to the bank.

Sentencing is set for Aug. 20, 2018. Both parties have agreed to recommend 37 months in federal prison. McAllister commended the Overland Park Police Department, the FBI and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kim Flannigan for their work on the case.

Goodale poised to lead FHSU baseball back to prominence

The first time Jerod Goodale suffered through a losing season was in his first year as a college head coach. His Colorado School of Mines team finished 17-30 back in 2012. They would struggle through losing seasons in three of his first fours years in Golden before breaking through with 29 wins in 2016.

Under Goodale’s guidance, the Orediggers won over 30 games in each of the last two seasons and this past spring qualified for their first NCAA Division II Tournament.

Now the former Hays High and Fort Hays State standout catcher is poised to lead his alma mater back to baseball prominence.

Goodale was named the Tigers new head coach last week and took some time to visit with the media Tuesday about his return to Hays.

Yesenia Sesmas-photo Dallas Police

A Sedgwick County jury on Tuesday found 36-year-old Yesenia Sesmas guilty of first-degree premeditated and intentional murder, kidnapping and interference with parental custody.

Prosecutors say she shot 27-year-old Laura Abarca in November 2017 at Abarca’s Wichita apartment and abducted 6-day-old Sophia Gonzales.

The baby was found safe about two days after the abduction at Sesmas’ apartment in Dallas.

Investigators said after Sesmas faked a pregnancy when she lost her unborn child, she drove to Wichita and Abarca in the head. The two women had worked together in the past.

Sesmas had contended Abarca agreed to give her the baby after Sophie was born but changed her mind at the last minute.
