Karrie Simpson Voth, chair of Fort Hays State University’s Department of Art and Design, and Libby Reimer, art and design graduate student, recently presented at the University and College Designers Association Design Education Summit, “Good Design Works,” in Youngstown, Ohio.

Their presentation, “Two bottles of Wine and a Heaping Dose of Viral Engagement: When Design and Politics Collided on Social Media at a Kansas University,” discussed the “Let Your Voice Be Heard” poster competition project done each year in FHSU’s history of graphic design class.

Students create posters promoting awareness of social and political issues. The competition, also sponsored by the American Democracy project, creates political engagement on Facebook as students and community members discuss posters.

The poster competition, which began in 2008, first went viral in 2015 when the winning posters sparked widespread debate and discussion after being published on Facebook.

“Good Design Works” spotlights all aspects of purpose-driven graphic and interactive design that has an influential and positive impact on the world.

Kansas governor candidate decries ‘snowflake meltdown’

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach says the outrage over his appearance in a parade atop a Jeep with a giant replica gun mounted on the back is “the left trying to attack guns” and the Second Amendment.

The Republican gubernatorial candidate said in a tweetSunday that he will “not back down in the face of a snowflake meltdown and outrage culture.”

The Kansas City suburb of Shawnee apologized in a statement to those who felt unsafe after Kobach’s appearance at the Saturday morning parade.

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management says someone subsequently hacked its Twitter account and sent a message that read: “Hey Kris, I think you are a bad guy with a gun. Also, maybe worse, you a dumb guy with a gun.”

Justices side with baker on same-sex wedding cake

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court ruled narrowly Monday for a Colorado baker who wouldn’t make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. But the court is not deciding the big issue in the case, whether a business can invoke religious objections to refuse service to gay and lesbian people.

The justices’ limited ruling turned on what the court described as anti-religious bias on the Colorado Civil Rights Commission when it ruled against baker Jack Phillips. The justices voted 7-2 that the commission violated Phillips’ rights under the First Amendment.

Justice Anthony Kennedy said in his majority opinion that the issue “must await further elaboration.” Appeals in similar cases are pending, including one at the Supreme Court from a florist who didn’t want to provide flowers for a same-sex wedding.

The same-sex couple at the heart of the case, Charlie Craig and Dave Mullins, complained to the Colorado commission in 2012 after they visited Phillips’ shop in suburban Denver and the baker quickly told them he would not create a cake for a same-sex wedding.

Colorado law prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and the commission concluded that Phillips’ refusal violated the law. Colorado state courts upheld the determination.

But when the justices heard arguments in December, Kennedy was plainly bothered by comments by a commission member. The commissioner seemed “neither tolerant nor respectful of Mr. Phillips’ religious beliefs,” Kennedy said in December.

That same sentiment suffused his opinion on Monday. “The commission’s hostility was inconsistent with the First Amendment’s guarantee that our laws be applied in a manner that is neutral toward religion,” he wrote.

Liberal justices Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan joined the conservative justices in the outcome. Kagan wrote separately to emphasize the limited ruling.

Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor dissented.

Summer seal coating starts on some Hays streets

CITY OF HAYS

Beginning Monday, seal coating will begin on various streets throughout Hays. See the map below for street locations and anticipated dates.

Seal coat is a spray applied in two coats with a dry time of 2 to 3 hours per pass, so the streets being sealed will be temporarily closed during this time.

On the date scheduled for treatment, all cars need to be moved from the street by 8:00 am. Streets being sealed will be closed from approximately 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Access can be achieved in cases of emergency. Parking on adjacent streets is recommended during the daytime. Parking in driveways is OK if you DO NOT plan on moving the vehicle between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The seal coat treatment should not be driven on until it has set up (dried). It will stain surfaces such as concrete, carpet, or flooring if tracked from construction areas.

Please have all lawn watering devices turned off the evening before the scheduled date.

Please help keep the streets clean and dry for a smooth and lasting project.

Traffic control will be set in areas of work being completed and picked up by the end of the work day. This project is scheduled to be completed within two weeks (pending weather conditions).

The city of Hays regrets any inconvenience this may cause to the public. If there are any questions, please call the Office of Project Management at 785-628-7350 or the contractor, Circle C Paving, at 316-570-4652.
