SMITH CENTER – Fannie Elizabeth Lawrence, 95, passed from her earthly life to the loving arms of her Savior on September 10, 2018. Fannie was born February 21, 1923 in Jefferson County, Kansas. She had lived in Smith Center since 1974.
Preceding her in death were her parents Frank and Mary Louise Lawrence, 3 baby brothers and sisters Mary Hughes, Ella Bigelow and Anna Voorhees. Fannie is survived by her brother Leslie Lawrence and brother-in-law Richard (Neil) Voorhees.
She attended rural schools in Jefferson County and lived and worked on the farm until 1960 when she was employed at the Shawnee County Infirmary at Topeka until its closure in 1974. During these years she became a licensed Practical Nurse and Licensed Nursing Home administrator. She later earned an associate degree in nursing home administration at Barton Community College.
She served as an L.P.N. and as an assistant nursing home administrator in Smith Center from 1974 until her retirement.
She was active in Smith Center community activities serving as treasurer for the Business and Professional Woman’s Club for 15 years and the Christian Singles Club. She was the Smith County chairman for the Arthritis Foundation for 15 years. She served many years on the board for the meals on wheels program. She also enjoyed many years singing in the North Central Christian Choir.
Fannie served as secretary for the local 60 Plus Club from 1995 until 2017 as well as leading a senior ladies exercise class from 1989 until 2016.
She was a member of the Faith Community Bible Church until it’s closing in 2008 and then attended the Grace Baptist Church.
