Pauline Helen Parke

Pauline Helen Parke

Pauline Helen Parke, of Colyer, passed away suddenly on December 27, 2018 at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney. Pauline was born in Seguin, Kansas to Felix and Helen Reitcheck on June 25, 1938. She was a graduate of Sheridan Community High School, in Hoxie, Kansas. Pauline married Curtis Parke on February 26, 1957.

Pauline was a strong and stoic person, a hard worker to the end of her life, but had a loving heart and gentle spirit. She was first and foremost a nurturer to her five children and their spouses, her fifteen grandchildren, and most recently for her husband during his long treatment and recovery from cancer. She was always thinking of others, even at the expense of her own needs. She rarely asked for anything for herself. Her greatest pride and joy were her fifteen grandchildren. She was always so proud of their accomplishments in school, in their careers, and in their lives.

Pauline loved to sew and cook, and she perfected these skills throughout her entire life. She made most of her own clothing and the clothing of her children with exceptional precision. She later used her sewing skills to make many beautiful crafts, including countless rugs and quilts for family and friends. Because of her tender care and attention to detail, she was known in her family as the ‘fixer’ of all things ripped, torn, and broken, clothing and otherwise. Pauline was also an accomplished cook and baker, often making her famous cinnamon rolls and peanut butter pie for family gatherings. But her work was not limited to the home. She played a very active role on the farm, driving the truck during harvest, feeding cattle, and helping to manage the operation.

Pauline was a devout and faithful Catholic and lifelong member of Christ the King Catholic Church in WaKeeney. She cherished her faith and held true to her beliefs her entire life. Her passing leaves a large void in the hearts of many people. We will do our best to fill that void by following her example by caring for those closest to us and doing good in this world.

Pauline leaves to mourn her passing her husband of 61 years, Curtis, of the home; five children and fifteen grandchildren, daughter Mary (Carlos) and her children Sean (Megan), Colin, and Nevan Madrid of Phoenix, AZ; daughter Susan (Martin) and her children Emilio, Ryan, and Geena Fajardo of Lenexa, KS; son Eugene (Tracey) and his children Liam and Madelyn of Noblesville, IN; daughter Lori (Brian) and her children Jon, Jacob, and Jessica Belleau of Berryton, KS; daughter Cindy (Bill), and her children Jordan (Kaitlinn), Caitlin, Branson, and Nicholas Billinger of Shawnee, KS; five siblings, Margaret Ritter, Delores Koerperich, Anna Rose Givens, Betty Jacob, and Gary Reitcheck; and sister-in-law Mary Reitcheck.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 31, 2018, at Christ the King Catholic Church, WaKeeney. Burial will be in the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery, WaKeeney.

Visitation and viewing will be Sunday evening, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home in WaKeeney. A parish vigil service will follow at 7:00 p.m., also at the funeral home.

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, memorial contributions are suggested to American Red Cross, Salvation Army, or Christ the King Catholic Church. Donations made to the organization may be sent to Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th St., WaKeeney, KS 67672.

Kansas teen to get high school, Harvard diplomas in 1 month

ULYSSES, Kan. (AP) — A 16-year-old Kansas boy will soon earn his high school diploma — and a few days later he’ll travel to Harvard to collect his bachelor’s degree.

Ulysses High School senior Braxton Moral will attend both commencement ceremonies in May, becoming the only student to successfully pursue a four-year high school degree and a bachelor’s degree from Harvard at the same time.

Harvard has changed the rules, Braxton’s father Carlos Moral said, so his son will “the one and only” reaching that milestone. Braxton Moral will be 17 when he gets his diplomas.

Carlos Moral said they began to realize their son was special when he was in the third grade.

“They told us: ‘You need to do something. He’s not just gifted. He’s really, really gifted,'” he said.

Braxton Moral skipped the fourth grade.

The Ulysses school district allowed him to take some high school classes while he was still in middle school. Before high school he took a class offered at Fort Hays State University. Then he was admitted into Harvard.

Braxton Moral simultaneously studied at the high school and the Harvard Extension School. The program typically serves adults who work and can’t attend classes on campus full time.

Ulysses High School math teacher Patsy Love served as the proctor for the Harvard program, administering Moral’s tests in Kansas. Moral spent the summer before his junior year at Harvard’s campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

“We constantly are monitoring Braxton to make sure he is not too overwhelmed,” said Julie Moral, Braxton Moral’s mother. “No achievement is worth him being unhappy.”

Braxton Moral is on track to graduate from the Bachelor of Liberal Arts program, with a major government and a minor in English, said Harry Pierre, associate director of communications for Harvard’s Division of Continuing Education.

Braxton Moral said he hopes to attend Harvard Law School next.

“Politics is end game for me,” he said, though he’s still too young to vote.

United Way reaps benefits of Days of Giving

By CRISTINA JANNEY

Hays Post

Steve Urban, Eagle Communications sales, presents a check to Sherry Dryden, United Way executive director, for $1,296.

The Eagle Radio of Hays sales team in partnership with its Days of Giving sponsors raised $1,296 for the United Way.

The sales team sold a radio advertising package surrounding The Ellis County United Way Days of Giving, and a portion of the proceeds was donated back to The Ellis County United Way.

Spots featuring Sherry Dryden, United Way Executive director, will air on Eagle’s Hays area radio stations, 101.9 FM The Bull, 1400 AM KAYS, 103.3 FM The Mix, 99.5 K2 Country, and Hull Broadcastings 96.9 FM KFIX through Sunday for a push to make the agency’s fundraising goal.

“The United Way of Ellis County is continuously humbled by the dedicated commitment of support from Eagle Communications with their tireless efforts of building awareness for the United Way,” Dryden said. “The advertising supporters for this project are amazing in their understanding of the important work the United Way does for Ellis County. Everyone’s help and support on this project is so very much appreciated.”

The agency is only 50 percent to its $400,000 goal. It has extended its annual fundraising drive, which typically ends on Dec. 31, into January.

The agency fears funding will have to be cut to its partner agencies, which may mean the number of people served in the community and the number of services provided may have to be reduced.

In 2018, United Way supported local programs at 15 partner agencies.

These included the American Red Cross, Big Brother Big Sisters, Cancer Council of Ellis County, Catholic Charities, Center for Life Experiences, Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation, Court Appointed Special Advocates, Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas, Early Childhood Connections, First Call for Help, Hays Area Children’s Center, Options, Parents and Children Together, Salvation Army and Western Kansas Association on the Concerns for the Disabled.

There is still time to donate and there are several ways to do so.

You can donate online, call United Way at 785-628-8281, send checks to P.O. Box 367, Hays, KS 67601 or make a donation or pledge in person at the United Way office at the Hadley Center, 205 E. Seventh St., Suite 111, Hays.
